Anyone heard about their year 10 or 12 children going in after 1st June?

My year 10 is not worried either way, I am concerned about GCSE's etc next year.

I have seen many Primary school discussions but less about Secondary . Smile

I think there will be some extra consideration for the GCSE and A Level exams next year, but the exam boards are still busy attempting to give grades to the current exam years (I don't envy them that job!). Once that's finished with they will start looking at what the exams will look like next year. One of the big problems they will have is that there is no fixed order in which schools have to teach topics. So they won't be able to just remove topics as done schools will have spent a long time in year 10 already covering it. I suspect there will be a lot of "choose 2 of these 3 topics to answer questions on" or similar. OR they will set the exams as normal and set lower grade boundaries as pupils will obviously be getting lower marks due to the disruption. This is where mature, independent, well-resourced pupils will be at an advantage as they will still be learning during lockdown, where those with less motivation or fewer resources or schools with a more relaxed approach will fall further behind. Which is shitty.

Surely there will have to be some rethinking/revision/reworking of GCSEs and A levels for next year, especially is autumn term is now looking dodgy. I know we're all the same storm, if not the same boat, but I'm having a very low mood day today. It's the endlessness of it all ....

We found out yesterday that our Y10's are going in from the 15th.
1/4 of the year group in each day a week. So, 1 group Monday, 2 Group Tuesday etc.
They will be in socially distanced classrooms and the teacher will move between in classroom. Each session will be 1.5 hours.
No uniform
Packed lunch required with personal water bottle,
Core subjects only.
Lessons given by subject teachers but not necessarily their own normal teachers.
Lesson content will compliment the home learning package.

Y12's are having one to one or small group Xoom lessons at home.

I'm happy with it. Any contact at the moment is good.

I'm afraid our Head and SLT have also says that home learning will continue well into the Autumn term. Nobody quite knows how it will look but most people are thinking there will be part-time schooling.

No direction yet for GCSE exams in Summer.

September makes me think 😳

The thought of possibly not being back in September is awful. I noticed in our school letter it said no in school lessons for years 7,8,9 until at least September. I knew already no lessons this term but the 'at least' bit has got me thinking.

We have been told this afternoon that only year 12's are going in

Speechless

It was also suggested that they might not even be in in September Shock

We've cancelled mocks for both Y10 and Y12; they really would not be reliable at all. I have a few looking at Oxbridge so I've already written a reference for them as I'm leaving at the end of term. As for arrangements; we are still working it as we had decent plans based on half the year groups in at the same time. Probably 2 days a week at best.

donkeyshrekmom · 05/06/2020 16:02

We've missed out on Year 10 mocks which should have been straight after Easter. They say it's impractical to do them this term. So next set of mocks are December. I'd like them to be doing them remotely this term as well, to be honest. I know you'd have to trust kids not to cheat, but that practice of timed exams is so useful, and presumably it would show where the problem areas are and would be good to assess how lockdown learning has been. I'd have thought more useful now than ever.

My school have cancelled year 12 exams and are doing informal testing in lessons when we're in (online for those who aren't coming in). Then we're bringing forward the first set of mocks in year 13 do we have those results in time to help with the UCAS applications. We won't have them in time for Oxbridge or medicine applications, but those candidates are often exceptional anyway and their GCSE results will be available along with teacher references.

Y12 to have formal exams in school in July which will inform their A level predicted grades for UCAS. Suffice to say Y12 daughter not happy

And with good reason. Completely unfair.

Universities have said (in most cases) that their students will not suffer detriment for work done during lockdown. So why are 6th form colleges expecting the same results and standards from their students (who are younger and less likely to have the skill set to study alone). DS is having remote exams the week after next.

Right on cue we got the school later at 3.15. Just a general one for the whole school (and reading between the lines, one can guess the kind of issues the Head has been dealing with) and it alludes to the fact (alluded to in previous weeks) that Year 10 and 12 will be in one day a week from 15th. Split into groups and - by the sounds of it - having all lessons in that group/class and not mixing with others. So they must be doing it based on options subjects. They'll be told by middle of next week which day of the week will be theirs and what their specific timetable will be. It'll be 9 am - 2.50pm. Packed lunches. My DS will be worrying about who else will be in that day - I wonder if they'll be able to tell us that (these days with GDPR they don't tend to publish lists). Goodness, what a massive faff - I can't begin to imagine the logistics of sorting all this out. It's an old, dirty, scruffy, too-small, rabbit-warren type of school too - probably much more difficult to organise than a nice, open, free-flow, purpose-built, modern one.

We've got plans now, but they will be starting from the 15th.
Each section of year 10 will get one week of in person teaching, while year 12 will get a bit more because there are fewer of them in smaller classes in the first place. We were planning to cap the numbers at 15, but there aren't enough coming in to give many groups of more than 10.

I'm looking forward to seeing them again, but as usual it's the kids I most want to see (because I'm worried about them as I'm not getting any remote work back from them) that are not coming in for whatever reason.

Year 10 DD, message from school to say going back from the 15th, and to expect a personalised timetable by the 11th. Not clear yet whether they're going in for a day for a series of lessons or going for one hour per day. She can either walk or be dropped off/picked up by me (WFH at the moment).

We may do something after 15th June but transportation will be an issue for some students.

Some of my 10s and 12s have done really well in online lessons. The ones who do not get a chance in school because someone else is dominating the lesson for some reason are making great progress especially given that they ask and answer questions in chat. I am particularly proud of one year 10 who will occasionally say ‘I don’t understand can you go over that’ - he has come on in leaps and bounds.

But it would be nice to see them all again

Just heard DD yr12, will be getting individual invitation for two days total, sometime after June 15th, to "discuss UCAS, give a project presentation and have a pastoral check in".

They have end of year exams remotely next week, and continue to have lessons on Zoom. Poor DD, she is missing school so much.

Nothing yet. Spoke to a teacher yesterday (about some learning issues) and I could tell they know but I wasn't going to put him on the spot by asking. Waiting for an update from school. I imagine it'll be a Friday-afternoon-hit-and-run-email. That's always when they announce news that might attract questions, then we all have to wait until at least Monday to ask them. DS really doesn't want to go and is quite anxious about it, but I will be sending him. It's a 15 min walk away and so it'll at least get him out of the house. I might feel differently if it was a complicated journey on public transport.

Y10 in a 'failing' Academy.
SN and SEN.
No communication (except 2 calls from Senco encouraging him to go on FB in last 8 weeks). Really poor.
