Not sure I can be bothered with this any more, nor that it makes much difference anyway.

What do other folk think?

Er, HANDS

avroroad · 19/05/2020 20:34

Yes. It takes minutes tops.

If it takes minutes to quarantine your shopping you are doing it wrong Confused

lboogy · 19/05/2020 20:35

I used to wipe down all the shopping. But goodness it took ages. I didn't bother with the last shop.

40somethingJBJ · 19/05/2020 20:37

I did it for the first week, but I’ve shopping some weeks for my house, my dad and a friend with 4 children, plus a few bits for other people. It’s an awful lot of shopping to disinfect!

MarcelineMissouri · 19/05/2020 20:39

No and I never have.

If we’d heard that shop workers, postmen and delivery drivers were dropping like flies then obviously that would indicate a problem but as they are not I am confident that catching it from post/shopping etc is not really a thing.

PickAChew · 19/05/2020 20:39

No. Never did.

catscatscatseverywhere · 19/05/2020 20:40

I never did this.

RedRed9 · 19/05/2020 20:46

JUST WASH YOUR HAMDS AFTER HANDLING IT!!!!?!

No need to shout.

For me it’s because I obviously then eat the food. So I want to wash eg loose apples before I eat them.

yip I am washing all shopping ,(wish I never started )leaving post for three days ,work in a supermarket and wash my uniform after every shift ,also wipe the chip and pin machine after every use at work ,(think im the only one who is)

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/05/2020 20:50

Waitingforsleep2 it was far more prevalent in the community in the 2 weeks before lockdown, when it was going through the population unchecked, than it is now.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/05/2020 20:50

No, never done it. Just wash hands when I come in, then again after putting shopping away.

Lovelydovey · 19/05/2020 20:52

Nope, never done it. I can’t let myself get into mindsets where I worry about minuscule risks and don’t have the headspace to function normally. It would be a downward spiral for me, though appreciate that it might not be for everyone.

FraterculaArctica · 19/05/2020 20:56

Yes, wiping all shopping with Dettol. It's awful, takes about 2 hours which we really don't have with 3 small kids. Can't just quarantine as we need the stuff sooner. No additional risk factors though both DH and I are over 40. But in my view, it was widely recommended on here a couple of months ago and I don't see any reason why the risk is substantially less now.

dementedma · 19/05/2020 20:56

No, never done it. Even my 85 year old mother doesn’t do it. it’s excessive and obsessive

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/05/2020 20:57

Just because it was ‘widely recommended on here’, doesn’t mean it was ever actually necessary.

ChasingRainbows19 · 19/05/2020 20:58

Never did or cleaned it either

IncrediblySadToo · 19/05/2020 20:58

@Bartlet & like minded posters

People do it because they’re scared, rather stupid, have too much time on their hands and it makes them feel more in control

It’s also a useful way for other Mumsnet users to identify someone of limited intellectual capabilities in case you meet them on other threads

Fuck Off

Destroyedpeople · 19/05/2020 20:58

You spend two hours wiping your shopping with dettol when you have small children? I am sorry but thst is just batty .

Dancingalong · 19/05/2020 20:58

Did it once and not done it since.

HeronLanyon · 19/05/2020 21:00

Yes everything is wiped after weekly shop then car and all handles etc. Novelty is definitely wearing thin but we’ve got it down to a fine art. Can’t see myself stopping anytime soon everything is handled a lot - why wouldn’t you is how I still think.

Good god there are some nasty comments here - about cleaning shopping of all things ! Bloody sad.

IncrediblySadToo · 19/05/2020 21:05

No amount of shouting or hand washing removes the virus that might be on shopping you've put away in the fridge or cupboard. It can remain in surfaces easily for 72 hours and has for much longer periods.

It's not a big deal to put things in the spare room for a period of time and to wash the rest.

There's more than one poster on here who has lost a parent to CV who hadn't left the house and had had shopping/parcels delivered on to their doorstep.

I'm vulnerable and you only need a tiny amount of the virus to become infected. Why wouldn't I make my home as safe as I can?

If others don't want to do this that's fine, your/their choice- but there's no need for the nastiness towards those of us who do do it.
