Not sure I can be bothered with this any more, nor that it makes much difference anyway.

What do other folk think?

I get the wiping down the outer packing, but I wouldn't fancy soaking fruit and veg in Milton

maleficent53 · 23/05/2020 08:09

Never done it and dont intend to

ooooohbetty · 23/05/2020 08:30

I didn't even know this was a thing. Of course not. That sounds mental.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 23/05/2020 09:51

Oooohbetty did you mean to be quite so rude to those shielding following government advice ?

TabbyMumz · 23/05/2020 10:07

Pineapple....I dont think it's ever been government advice to wash your shopping?

FlamingoAndJohn · 23/05/2020 10:10

It was advice on the BBC news in the early days.

whatswithtodaytoday · 23/05/2020 10:15

Yes, I'm still wiping down/washing shopping. We're both under 40, no known underlying conditions. I just think of all the hands that might have touched it or coughs that might have been near it in the last 72 hours and feel it's sensible. My mum is too, but they're over 70 and are being very careful about everything.

I get that you can just put it away and wash your hands, but how many times a day so you quickly grab something from the fridge or cupboard and then eat or carry on with your day without thinking to wash your hands? I know I do it a lot, especially in the house all day with a toddler.

Yes, I still am. My husband is in the shielding group so are following government and medical advice.

And btw oooohbetty my husband has severe COPD and is also immunocompromised he is not, nor has ever been mental as you suggest!!!!!

However, your post does sum up for me how little compassion some people feel about those of us having to shield, and back up my theory that as the country slowly begins steps towards normality, those in the shielding group, who cannot take those steps, are being forgotten - or worse labelled as mental.

cornish009 · 23/05/2020 10:18

I dont think it's ever been government advice to wash your shopping?

It was advice given to those of us who are in the shielding group and clinically severely vulnerable.

I spray the shopping with dettol. DH thinks it’s OTT, but I’m pretty risk adverse and if one of the kids gets seriously ill I need to know I did everything possible to protect us and couldn’t have done more. It takes me about an hour and it is a pain, but makes me feel better so I do it!

Coronavirus: How safe are takeaways and supermarket deliveries? www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-52040138

“Delivery slots permitting, a home food drop is less risky than a trip to a supermarket as you will avoid other shoppers.
Any risk would be the possible contamination of food or packaging - handled by other people - or from the delivery driver.
You could leave a note on your door asking drivers to ring the bell and step back, but Prof Bloomfield says there's no such thing as "zero risk".
"For contained or packaged goods, either store them for 72 hours before using them - or spray and wipe plastic or glass containers with bleach [carefully diluted as directed on the bottle].
"For unwrapped fresh goods, which could have been handled by anyone - wash thoroughly under running water and leave to dry," she adds.”

We talked about wiping shopping when it was first mentioned and decided that neither of us thought it worthwhile (if DH thought it was necessary he was bloody doing it, I wasn't!). DH was wary about takeaways at first but, pizza box incident aside, I never have been. He soon got over it though and we have a weekly curry delivered.

Saying that, if people want to wash their shopping, quarantine their post etc. it's down to them, it doesn't affect me and calling people mental for doing it is horrible. Then again, there seems to be a lot of horrible people about now, presumably using the virus as an excuse.

LindainLockdown · 23/05/2020 11:06

Did this for 2 weeks then realised I just couldn't be bothered.
