Furlough madness

Surely I'm not the only one who thinks this furlough scheme, whilst deserving of some merit, is far too generous? At 80% there is little to encourage people to return to work since this other 20% is accounted for by the savings in petrol, coffees and other work related daily expenditure.
This has all got to be paid for remember.

OP posts:
ExclamationPerfume · 19/05/2020 19:50

Our income is down by 20%. We have no work expenses normally. My DH cycles to work and takes food with him. 20% loss of income is a huge amount to us. If he could go back he would but he isn't allowed to.

Washinglinewench29 · 19/05/2020 19:53

I like to think we have paid enough tax in the past and will do on the future to have the furlough and not be judged for it. Many people on furlough are worried about job security, it's hardly a holiday.

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 19/05/2020 19:53

I can assure you all they are having a bloody whale of a time down the beach on 80% pay. No fecker is going back to work anytime soon. Social distancing out the window in my seaside town today.. UK holiday paid for 🙌

rossKemp · 19/05/2020 19:55

What are you talking about? Do you even understand furlough? Ridiculous thread

H1978 · 19/05/2020 19:57

We’ve furloughed all our drivers because being in the hospitality industry there’s no way we can start our business anytime soon, at least this way we know our employees are earning something and we can call on them once things are up and running especially as there’s a shortage of psv drivers in the industry

CaptainMerica · 19/05/2020 21:04

What you are saying, OP, is that you think that the impact of this should be borne only by the (often low paid) workers in hospitality, retail, leisure, etc, who are hardest hit now. Rather than being fairly spread across the country through higher taxation when we pay it back down the line.

I don't see how you can possibly justify that, tbh.

Qasd · 19/05/2020 21:06

I would return to work tomorrow if my employer would let me

HTH!

KaronAVyrus · 19/05/2020 21:12

I would return to work the second I’m allowed to. I had no choice in the matter. The government shut down my entire sector.

I’ve also had a look for jobs and there are NONE.

croprotationinthe13thcentury · 19/05/2020 21:13

The furlough thing full stop is madness. We cant afford it and have had to print money to pay for it. We will be paying it off for a generation. On top of all that it has encouraged millions to pretend they are scared of going back to work when the reality they are enjoying having an extended holiday.

KaronAVyrus · 19/05/2020 21:15

What would you have done instead of furlough? Just let unemployment reach 8 million instead?

KaptenKrusty · 19/05/2020 21:24

At least we pay tax on what we earn on furlough and we will hopefully mostly get to return to work !

Alternative is we all go on the dole?

Also loads of people don’t have commuter costs or buy lunch at work? I just cycle and bring food from home

If anything the lockdown is costing more money - electricity bill is higher than usual and need to buy so much more groceries!

Hamm87 · 19/05/2020 21:24

Yeah love living on 100 quid a week

thetupperwareboxofdoom · 19/05/2020 21:26

OP what's your current work situation? I'm assuming you haven't been furloughed.
Is this just a new kind of benefits bashing? People are not able to work through no fault of their own, but apparently they don't deserve to be paid a living wage in the mean time. So what should happen then?

There were 32 million adults in employment at the start of the year but the economic geniuses on this thread would have quite happily seen a quarter of that go on the dole overnight.

Somehow the economic carnage of that wouldn’t affect their job security one bit 🤦‍♀️

All of you that are so against the furlough scheme, what's your work situation? I wonder how many of you would be so opposed to it if it meant the difference between the roof over your families head/food on the table or having nothing at all. Nobody asked for this situation.

Sparklingbrook · 19/05/2020 21:39

People that are against the furlough scheme don't seem to actually understand it and what it's for.

DivisionBelles · 19/05/2020 21:41

Echoing ALL the other replies, with the exception of croprotation's, you obviously do not understand how furlough works. I'm lucky to still be working - hospitality because there is still some ongoing work to do - but 80% of my colleagues are on furlough.

None of them asked, my employer cannot afford to top up their wages to 100% either, and over half of them as a conservative estimate are at very real risk of redundancy in the future. It wasn't a choice, our ordinarily viable and profitable business has been closed by the govt, what would you like to have happened?

nancy75 · 19/05/2020 21:42

Yeah me & Dp are lazy fuckers, Instead of being furloughed Dp could be standing behind the bar of a pub that’s closed & I could be in the office organising group sport lessons that we are not allowed to give.
Nobody is saying furlough me I’m scared to work - you’ve fallen for daily mail bullshit designed to take your mind away from the fact our government is useless & has monumentally fucked up the response to this crisis

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/05/2020 21:45

You clearly have no idea what the furlough scheme actually is or how it works.

I didn’t choose to be furloughed, I don’t need ‘encouraging’ or not, it’s up to my employer and I have no say in the matter.

Perhaps get your facts straight before you get your knickers in a twist.

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/05/2020 21:47

Also how on earth do you know that 20% will be saved in ‘coffee and petrol’?! What a ridiculous comment, you know everyone’s financial situation do you? Many many people will be struggling on 80%

Katypyee · 19/05/2020 21:52

Sounds like you have been reading too much Daily Mail.

Nobody chose this. Let's just let them starve hey as I am okay.

I can't even be arsed wasting anymore time on this post

Sparklingbrook · 19/05/2020 21:54

Yes everyone should be encouraged to get back to their jobs at the businesses that are closed at the moment. That makes perfect sense.

savehalloween · 19/05/2020 21:55

It's not generous. I'm glad it exists but people's industries have been decimated overnight.

When people talk about 'asking to be furloughed' and people being encouraged back to work, it totally misses the point that the furlough scheme is there to protect staff who would be at risk of redundancy.
