Private dentist I used to work at is already making redundancies after having no income for months and there being no end in sight.
Anyone else feel like this might be worse than the recession for job loss?

Very possibly. Frustrating as I was trying to change jobs before all this. Luckily I have a job for now at least even if I hate it

I work in oil in gas and was furloughed yesterday, i dont think I'll have a job in a couple of weeks. Told me possible redundancies coming up. I feel sick with worry.

Well that’s good news for me if they are going to let everyone go and then when the lights come back on in a few weeks they’ll have to pay my recruitment fee to replace them.

I have seen some heartless crap posted on these boards, but you take the fucking biscuit. You really think that the thousands of people that are facing redundancy, in a recession that they are already stating is going to make the 2008/09 recession look like a fun party, is good news for you? I personally hope that recruitment consultants are the first to go if they are all like you.

Just because you’re too thick to read what’s read I’ll point out the bloody obvious. Anyone being making redundancies right now is shooting their load too early. There’s a huge skills shortage world wide. My candidates are getting 10% pay rises NOW.
A heartless and offensive btch then? What a load of bullshit. Wages are dropping the world over, companies are folding and downsizing. Real, actual, people are facing the shattering of their lives, and you think that is FUN* and an opportunity to make money?

Let's be clear here - a recruitment "consultant", if that is what you really are, is nothing to write home about. A trained monkey with software can do the job. And if they aren't already, they soon will be. Automation makes so many things easy, and the only thing that will keep people in jobs is where the service might require a "human face". That's something you wouldn't qualify for being.

Yep. Despite relying heavily on the furlough scheme, our place of work is making 20 people redundant. We all have to re-apply for our jobs, likely on less convenient hours or wages (if we actually get it!)

@SpringBlossomIsBeautiful that’s awful. There are emergency dental hubs set up, have a google for your area or ring 111 to be referred. Definitely sounds like you warrant it.
I rang my dentist on the off chance as I’m in pain with my tooth and was so surprised someone actually answered.

Again what you’re missing is people who are good at their jobs, aren’t loosing them.

Better performers are more likely to keep jobs, sure. But this does not apply to businesses and roles shutting down due to lock down. The majority of jobs are going because of the global impact of the pandemic, not because people were doing them badly.

Chrissie good news for you that you know you'll have guaranteed work.

So many of us face uncertainty, and it won't be that easy to step into a similar position as there won't be the jobs.

One of the places I work was already running at a £500 loss, we have to stay open but are taking around 6% if our usual weekly income. It's no joke.

@Lumene of course good people will be made redundant, but they’ll also get snapped up by the competition. Many companies have worked through this, kept their staff on full pay and are making hay whilst the sun shines. It’s not all doom and gloom and I think the last thing people need is more to worry about.

What about travel?
What about those shielding?
What about those who can’t work effectively with young children at home?

It is simply not true to claim that those who are good at their jobs will not be losing them. Plenty of good and even great employees will be facing redundancy through no fault of their own.

@AlfieandAnnieRose -I know this is off topic but I phoned 111 last Friday evening & was given the number of the hub. I was quite excited as I was led to believe I might be able to get treatment. A dentist phoned me back & said the remaining bit of tooth needs removing & it sounds like I have an infection so they can offer a prescription until dentists are up & running . I was so disappointed ☹️

@Lumene ... then they do something else. It’s an inconvenience but what’s the alternative. Where there’s chaos there’s cash.

But generally speaking, obviously there’s always exceptions, good people won’t be made redundant from a viable business it’s the dead wood that gets cleared out.

@ChrissieKeller61 Wow - there are ways of saying things and ways of saying things. Tact clearly isn't your strong point. All I can say is pride comes before a fall. Recruitment will drop - particularly in office management / support roles / canteen staff roles etc as more companies decide to embrace the WFH model. You may not be as safe as you think you are.

@ThroughThickAndThin01 nobody knows, so it’s a bit early to be panicking IMO but I can only speak for myself, interviews started happening last week, an offer went out on Friday and it was declined, too low. The client will re package because there’s nobody else can do that role available in the uk right now.

Job loses are inevitable. We have a small business and employ 3 support staff. Two are now furloughed, as am I. Turnover is now around 25% of normal level, DH and office manager are keeping it ticking over. Once furlough ends we will sadly have to let the 2 go. This scenario will be playing out across the country in thousands of businesses.
