Jobs already going

Private dentist I used to work at is already making redundancies after having no income for months and there being no end in sight.
Anyone else feel like this might be worse than the recession for job loss?

OP posts:
WhatInFreshHell · 16/05/2020 11:44

We've gone into work this morning and basically been told to go home, there's no money and they'll be in touch shortly.

Rowantree2020 · 16/05/2020 11:53

Catastrophising about the economy is really not helpful.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/05/2020 11:57

What industry WhatinFreshHell? Really sorry to hear that, were you expecting it?

Teakind · 16/05/2020 12:00

Judging by their username, I think @ChrissieKeller61 is just out to wind people up. That and the fact they don't seem to know what they are talking about.

ChrissieKeller61 · 16/05/2020 12:01

@Moondust001 I made a lot of money in the last recession when apparently there were no jobs, there were. Nobody knows what’s happening at the moment. But I do know people with skills will be just fine they always are.

Grumpylockeddownwoman · 16/05/2020 12:27

I give up - if you cannot see the difference between the recession and this - you must be pretty dense. Travel is the perfect example - it doesn’t matter how much money you have, or how much you may wish to travel - it just simply wont happen.

So the travel industry will make redundancies. Will people get other jobs at some point - of course they will, but that’s not the question is it.

ChrissieKeller61 · 16/05/2020 12:30

That’s actually completely incorrect. People are travelling right now.

JassyRadlett · 16/05/2020 12:31

People are travelling right now.

Oh bless you.

ChrissieKeller61 · 16/05/2020 12:37

Oh you’ve not seen a plane in the sky since mid March ?

MinorArcana · 16/05/2020 12:39

People are travelling right now.

Oh, come on. Let’s not pretend that the amount of people travelling right now is anywhere near pre-Covid levels.

JassyRadlett · 16/05/2020 12:43

Reductio ad absurdum isn’t as convincing an technique as you think it is, I’m afraid.

Best of luck to you in recruiting to a booming travel sector, though.

ChrissieKeller61 · 16/05/2020 12:46

Ok so I don’t recruit into aviation, I know of only one company that does. They’ll have to think of plan B ... but there is always a plan b.
You’s all seem to be talking yourself into recession so best of luck to you.

Grumpylockeddownwoman · 16/05/2020 12:48

@ChrissieKeller61 so we can conclude from your statements;

  • The travel industry can survive on just a few flights
  • Any business that doesn’t have a contingency to cover staffing and all other costs for eternity is shit
  • You should sell off all your assets before giving into the inevitable (why scale down your business when you can sell everything you own).
  • You can make more money flogging toothpaste on insta than by running a dental practice.

Wow I’ve learned a few thing today Hmm

ChrissieKeller61 · 16/05/2020 12:56

Or @Grumpylockdownlady you can sit around scratching your head whilst your world crumbles.
Laugh away whatever

  • The dentist selling toothpaste isn’t flogging Colgate samples on the side
  • The travel industry is being bailed out
  • Contingencies for less than 2 months salaries is Indeed a bit a shit
  • Sell your assets if you want to retain staff, don’t if you don’t buy don’t cry about it when you can’t find good people on the other side.

As I say crack on the worlds going to keep turning however you view it, but it’s a hell of a lot less stressful looking on the bright side

SailingAwayIntoSunrise · 16/05/2020 13:13

You are talking yourself up there @ChrissieKeller61 because you have to. A recession means no one hiring and so no fat bonus for you.

Job listings down

LostJobtoday · 16/05/2020 13:16

I’ve lost mine. Lawyer.

Grumpylockeddownwoman · 16/05/2020 13:21

The thing is @ChrissieKeller61 as I said - I’ve not been negatively affected - in fact I’d kill for a holiday as have been working more than usual.

However - this isn’t everyone’s reality and no amount of “positive wankery” is going to change that. You’re basically saying that if people get made redundant it’s either their fault (you mentioned dead wood), and, if they don’t walk straight into another job not skilled enough.

No ones talking anyone into a recession - people are still spending, but the reality is - areas felty on things like tourism - they will be hard hit.

Closing your eyes and sticking your fingers in your ears and saying “I’ll be alright” isn’t helpful.

Grumpylockeddownwoman · 16/05/2020 13:22

@LostJobtoday Flowers sorry to hear that.

SailingAwayIntoSunrise · 16/05/2020 13:29

“positive wankery” 😂😂

teaandcake19 · 16/05/2020 13:32

@WhatInFreshHell and @LostJobtoday - my heart goes out to you both. It's such an awful time, and I'm well aware how lucky I am (job respect at least).

@ChrissieKeller61 it might be nice to try and show some compassion to people. It will not be that easy for people to get other jobs no matter how skilled/good they are. Do you really think suggesting people should be walking straight into other jobs is going to be doing anyone any good? Why don't you think about what people losing their jobs are going through?

MarshaBradyo · 16/05/2020 13:34

I work (but not atm) in a sector which contracts easily in recessions. It’s easier to do so as competition is high and supply is good. I also still get daily job emails from a site that collates them all and new ones have trickled right down.

Crosswordocelot · 16/05/2020 13:39

However - this isn’t everyone’s reality and no amount of “positive wankery” is going to change that. You’re basically saying that if people get made redundant it’s either their fault (you mentioned dead wood), and, if they don’t walk straight into another job not skilled enough.

...and if you're a small business that cant afford to indefinitely pay staff and all overheads for an indefinite amount of time, with no warning, you're also shit! 🙄

Do you think 12000 BA staff are all awful at their job....or think that the really good pilots or cabin crew will walk straight into another (comparable) job....because so many airlines are going to have vacancies atm...

Tootletum · 16/05/2020 13:40

We are all heading for an economic meltdown that will be worse than anything any of us can remember, yes. But 80% of the population are still so busy bleating about the small risk of dying of the virus (or some crap about whether someone came within 1.9 m of them for one millisecond) to notice they will soon be sitting on the street waiting for the homeless shelter to open.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 16/05/2020 13:44

@ChrissieKeller61 is bricking it because she knows full well that sales/commission type roles are the first ones to get hit when the economy contracts and that despite her bravado now, it is likely that the jobs market is drying up right now and whilst she may get the odd role in, volumes will be down. And employers who do have any vacancies will likely be trying to save themselves the 20% agency fee and recruit for them on their own.

I know a few recruiters, they've all been quiet, about half furloughed and their furlough money doesn't include commission. They are all worried.

StartingGrid · 16/05/2020 16:08

Decided to take a shot for every bullshit cliche @ChrissieKeller61 spouted, pretty sure my liver just packed up.

She is the exact reason why I will never take a tout call from a recruitment consultant... and those that aren't utter wankers that I do entertain have been falling over themselves to get in touch and I reckon would come in and replace my cleaner if they thought they could get work from me Hmm

On a more compassionate note, I genuinely feel for all of you affected, and I hope this hardship passes and opens up better opportunities for you down the line.
