Why are people not more angry about the government's handling of the crisis?

Or are the newspaper not giving an accurate picture of people's feelings?

33,186 deaths recorded so far.

Surely plenty of these people had families and friends?

I suppose they can't really march at the moment.

@GhostofFrankGrimes how is Corbyn responsible?

He isn't but plenty of folk will use the pathetic, pointless cop out that things would have apparently been worse under him.

Bit like scewing up in your new job and making the excuse that it at least the other guy wasn't hired.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/05/2020 15:34

Because they recognise that hindsight is a wonderful thing.

What like Operation Cygnus 4 years ago?

NiteFlights · 14/05/2020 15:35

A mixture of reasons, the main and probably commonest one being that people have a lot on their plate and are coping day to day.

Believing that all this is an act of God rather than something that could have been prepared for, unable to comprehend that anyone could have done a better job.

Wishful thinking - it’s terrifying to contemplate how badly the govt is doing, easier to think they are doing okay.

Misguided political partisanship, determination not to criticise the govt for anything, no matter how bad.

Wanting to wait longer to see how things pan out longer term. (Hoping things will ‘get better’ somehow, eg that our figures won’t turn out to be as bad as they look now)

Stupidity.

randomsabreuse · 14/05/2020 15:36

@NoCaseToAnswer

Exactly that! Makes no difference, long time until next election, massive majority.

jobhunter7 · 14/05/2020 15:37

This was a new situation that could never have been expected and I think they've pulled things together pretty quickly and professionally.
Over 30000 deaths is terrible.

Well it is a new situation. But as someone did point out on Gogglebox that it was happening in China months beforehand...

OP- most people me included sometimes don't apply critical thinking skills. We're not really taught them so just go along with the headlines or whatever our friends on Facebook are saying. Hence people clapping like performing seals on Thursday nights for they know not what.

Boris Johnson isn't going to look like such a loveable toff once Keir Starmer is through with him.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 14/05/2020 15:39

We are. But realistically, there is no precedent. Being the person in charge must be a huge amount of pressure and again if we are being realistic, what would have happened if we had locked down earlier? People will only comply for a certain amount of time. I agree that we should have grounded flights and done the quarantine coming in from the very start but it's a difficult call the make. Dont get me wrong I dont like Boris at all but no country has dealt with this perfectly and hindsight is 20:20. No one knew what to do for the best back then because national lockdown has never even been considered before. We're all human. People make mistakes.

HerLadySheep · 14/05/2020 15:39

Perhaps because they're only seeing the propaganda in mainstream media and the "poor Boris" shit on social media.

We didn't need hindsight, we had very clear visibility of what was happening elsewhere. We had wall to wall coverage of "how did Italy" get it so wrong, we didn't pay attention or believe it would happen here because of British exceptionalism, which is responsible for so many problems.

The WHO told us to "test test test" and we were told at the Government briefing, oh, they don't mean us, that's for other countries. And now it clearly turns out they did mean us.

As for not trusting the numbers from other Countries, that's exactly what they are saying about us!

jobhunter7 · 14/05/2020 15:40

@Reginabambina

Too tired to care? Simply not impacted enough to care? For instance we don’t know anyone who’s been seriously ill with it and have not lost any money.

But for the families and friends of the 30,000 people who have lost their lives...

OP posts:
Jeffersona · 14/05/2020 15:40

@Hercwasonaroll Enough people were screaming at them to lockdown quicker, cancel Cheltenham races, shut the pubs etc, let alone the disaster over testing, tracing, PPE and care homes.

caringcarer · 14/05/2020 15:42

What are you angry about? There was a world wide shortage of PPE and China who makes 90 per cent of it was locked down so unproductive. Germany and France who makes some were not exporting it but keeping all they had for themselves. They would not sell any to Italy either. The UK does not have anywhere near the testing capacity as Germany. There was also shortage of swabs for testing again made in China and Germany. We tested as many as could get swabs for and test. The pandemic came from China but they lied and tried to do usual coverup instead of warning the rest of world sooner. Government did its best. It did furlough scheme to protect jobs even though UK will be swamped in debt. DH and I both worked from home so got no government handouts but will still have to bear extra tax hike later down line and we are not complaining. People have worked night and day to all pull together. I know a factory that usually makes cotton that adapted machinery and is now working on three shifts around the clock to make gowns for NHS. If you have to be angry be angry with China.

MorrisZapp · 14/05/2020 15:43

I love the ever present belief that once the public realise they've been 'lied to' they will recant and change their vote.

They don't, they haven't, they never will. I don't support the Tories but I don't imagine for a minute that the people who do think that BJ is doing a fab job right now, they just hold their nose and vote along with their broadly held principles, like everyone else does.

Hercwasonaroll · 14/05/2020 15:44

I also think there's an element of "we can't bring back the dead so why get angry". Also an element of "its not likely there will be another pandemic any time soon".

What does getting angry actually achieve? Apart from you personally being pissed off?

NiceTwin · 14/05/2020 15:44

Nothing to be angry about.
Whoever was in charge would be damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Jeffersona · 14/05/2020 15:46

I'd say most who think Boris is doing well or 'he's trying his best' are Tories who would be baying for blood if it was a Labour government.

Are there those on the left who are attacking Boris/the Tories who would be making excuses for Corbyn if he was in charge? No doubt.

But there is a reason why the UK has the second highest death toll in the world and it's the same reason as country number 1: incompetence/complacency at the top.

HeIenaDove · 14/05/2020 15:47

yeah but no but yeah but no but yeah but no but Corbyn Hmm

GameSetMatch · 14/05/2020 15:52

Apparent Boris has become more popular during the pandemic, it’s ridiculous. I think some people are angry but what can be done, we can’t protest we can’t do anything???

Waspnest · 14/05/2020 15:52

I'm not angry because I doubt I could have done a better job. Everybody with a brain knows that every government is trying to juggle keeping people safe and well with stopping their economy crashing. I'm grateful that I don't have to make the decisions on that because every policy is going to make part of the population hate you.

Humphriescushion · 14/05/2020 15:53

The government has lost any credibility for me. Lack of transparency, deflecting. And as for the government graphs! The government insisted on making comparisions when they were favourable and then suddenly they were not comparable! Oh surprise! Now nadine dorries tweeting outright lies!

Sinuhe · 14/05/2020 15:53

Well, the government has fucked up, 33k hindsight deaths later.
Whichever way it's handled, there are winners and losers. I just can't get too angry about it.

Nobody was to worried about about the whole issue back in March when everyone was flogging to the country side in a last dich attempt at freedom, thegovernmentobviouslyfeltthe same

LJC1234 · 14/05/2020 15:56

Because they are dammed if they do and dammed If they don't ?

Because getting angry won't fix it? We can't change the past.

Because we just all want to try and get on with it as best as we can?

I'm pretty sure whoever was In charge would have been openly slated for any decision they made .

Jeffersona · 14/05/2020 15:58

People were always going to die from this virus but how many thousands died due to waiting the extra week(s) for any sort of lockdown?

It's a disgrace we've overtook Italy and Spain as the worst hit in Europe when we had weeks of warning when they were in a bad way and we were relatively unaffected.

Waspnest · 14/05/2020 15:59

Yes I'm more angry with people I see when I go shopping who are completely ignoring social distancing. Or the arseholes who ended up in A and E with drunken injuries on VE bank holiday.

Jeffersona · 14/05/2020 16:01

@Waspnest And the government were actively encouraging all the street parties and celebrations that weekend.

TabbyMumz · 14/05/2020 16:01

"Well it is a new situation. But as someone did point out on Gogglebox that it was happening in China months beforehand..."
Yes, but I'm not sure what else you wanted them to do. They pulled stuff together pretty well and were taking on advice from scientific experts.
