Would you be happy to lock down for the next two years?

If the government restrictions stayed in place?

So until May 2022.

OP posts:
ItsNoFromMe · 13/05/2020 13:30

No way. I'd rather take my chance.

Eyewhisker · 13/05/2020 13:30

No. We have locked down to protect the over 50s at the expense of our children who are virtually unaffected by this. The risk to the vast majority of the population is low (not true for the over 70s). If the over 70s want to lockdown for 2 years, that should be their choice but the rest of us need to get back to work to salvage some future for our children. We owe it to our children to do so.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 13/05/2020 13:31

I love how some people who want to stay in lockdown forever fully expect NHS staff and essential workers to keep working despite the risk. If it’s ok for you not to take the risk, you should be prepared for them to also stop working. Otherwise you’re just a hypocrite.

Keepgoing88 · 13/05/2020 13:33

No

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 13/05/2020 13:33

Why did you ask the question OP? Why didn't you just write the thread you're actually writing which is you and your family don't want to be in lockdown indefinitely and you think you're knowledgeable enough to question the general scientific and medical consensus about a second wave. Hmm
Fwiw, I'll stay in lockdown as long as it takes. I don't get the appeal of having the 'freedom' to catch a fatal illness but perhaps that's because I know people who have died from Covid. I know people who have been hospitalised by it. And we have had a lot of illnesses in our family. For me, staying at home isn't worse than losing a loved one or dying.

Tiredmum100 · 13/05/2020 13:33

Absolutely no way.

MinteeFresh · 13/05/2020 13:34

I'd be happy to sack off the rest of 2020 tbh

Saracen · 13/05/2020 13:34

Happy? No.
Willing? Yes.

IcedPurple · 13/05/2020 13:34

Those who have answered 'yes' are essentially saying that they'd be happy for

  • children to remain uneducated
  • the elderly to remain isolated
  • much non-Covid medical care to be suspended
  • the taxes which fund the NHS to be reduced to a trickle
  • millions to lose their jobs
  • many businesses to close permanently
  • the economy to be devastated
  • charities to lose much of their funding
  • domestic violence and mental health issues to soar

... and much else besides.

If any of those who answered 'yes' are reading, can they explain why they think the cost is worth it?

user1487194234 · 13/05/2020 13:35

No chance

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/05/2020 13:37

No. Quality of life is just as important as quantity of life. And by quality of life I'm meaning things like grandparents see their grandchildren, families having money to put a roof over their heads and food on the table, children having access to education and socialisation, teenagers gaining their qualifications and moving out into the world etc. Not too worried about fancy holidays or cars or any thing like that, but the little things that make life worth while.

Hobbesmanc · 13/05/2020 13:37

Bonkers. We are already facing a economic meltdown. And the jobs that would be lost forever are those that provide employment for younger people or the less well- catering, hotels, call centres, tourism, hospitality. When furlough ends they will be thrown onto UC.

And then the white collar jobs will erode- middle managers, HR, sales, Recruitment, retail. We won't be able to afford public sector none essential workers- or to train new essential workers

There would be huge civic unrest and enforcement would be impossible.

The question should be do you think a two year lock down is feasible.

Alsohuman · 13/05/2020 13:37

*For those saying NO, how would you feel if the 2nd wave of CV-19 was far more severe?

If it is, better have it now rather than in winter when NHS capacity is far, far more limited.

If it is, better have it now whilst there is still some semblance of an economy, before the recession becomes a depression*

All of this. Let’s get the second wave over and done with now. If it comes in December or January we’re well and truly screwed.

MarshaBradyo · 13/05/2020 13:38

The funding can’t continue that long. So you would see mass redundancy and low tax paid in. Things really would start to get bad.

madcatladyforever · 13/05/2020 13:38

If I continued to be paid hell yes, I'd love every second.
But it isn't going to happen I work for the NHS.
That's highly unlikely though.

CloudPop · 13/05/2020 13:39

@DuesToTheDirt totally agree with you.

IcedPurple · 13/05/2020 13:39

I don't get the appeal of having the 'freedom' to catch a fatal illness

It is only fatal in 1% of cases, possibly considerably lower.

However, if you want to lock yourself up for 2 years (presumably at your own expense after Oct) that's obviously your personal choice.

Nameofchanges · 13/05/2020 13:39

‘I love how some people who want to stay in lockdown forever fully expect NHS staff and essential workers to keep working despite the risk. If it’s ok for you not to take the risk, you should be prepared for them to also stop working. Otherwise you’re just a hypocrite.’

The more people who go to work, the greater the risk to essential workers.

madcatladyforever · 13/05/2020 13:39

My roots are getting pretty bad though.

Annamaria14 · 13/05/2020 13:39

No

PillowBobbles · 13/05/2020 13:39

Of course not.

14 women and 2 children died as a result of domestic violence the first 3 weeks of lockdown. Is that an acceptable rate going forward?

nowaitaminute · 13/05/2020 13:42

I would be only delighted 🤣
