Sorry, I meant to say for the few minutes I'm in the shop

Easilyanxious · 11/05/2020 19:48

I got some from Etsy for all of us incase it was compulsory to wear one , wether I will use it I don’t know as I don’t go on public transport and have been avoiding shops
If I had a cold I wouldn’t go out anyway but I guess if I went somewhere and everyone had one on I would probably end up doing the same so thought it was better to have them

PestymcPestFace · 11/05/2020 19:53

A crucially important point, which is often overlooked by doctors, systematic reviewers, mumsnetters and the lay press , is that most research on masks – almost all of which has been undertaken in the context of healthcare workers – considers the extent to which they protect the wearer . The current question we need to address is a different one: whether mask wearing protects other people from droplets emitted by the wearer– a measure known as source control. Source control works in a different way to wearer-protection – by blocking large droplets as they are emitted in coughing, sneezing and talking and before they become aerosolised. Large droplets (and indeed a proportion of aerosols) are blocked – not perfectly, but significantly – by cotton home-made masks.

In relation to a community-wide intervention such as mask-wearing, we do not need to prevent every transmission of every droplet or every viral particle. As with handwashing and social distancing, the objective of the policy is more modest: to achieve a substantial reduction in the transmission rate of the virus.

Wear a mask and help protect others or don't wear a mask and help spread the virus. Without legislation it is you choice.

How to make a mask

geekaMaxima · 11/05/2020 19:57

I really don't see that a thin cotton scarf loosely wrapped around my face is going to make a huge difference.

With respect, that's your failure to see, not an accurate statement of risk reduction.

Something is better than nothing. A lot of somethings add up to big reduction in risk over time.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/05/2020 20:00

Masks / face coverings are mandatory for those aged 6+ where I live (Germany) in:
shops, taxis, public transport, stations, bus stops etc

Guess what, we're all coping - Brits surely can too.
There seems some learned helplessness here, but it's time for Big Girl Pants - make a mask out of them !

The German government certainly isn't supplying masks to ordinary people - we're expected to be reasonably competent adults
Many people make their own mask; a few just tie a scarf over mouth & nose

The main aim is to protect others during the stage when you are infectious but not yet experiencing symptoms.
They wear masks to protect you, as well

BigChocFrenzy · 11/05/2020 20:01

oh and noone taught us how to wear masks
For the main aim of protecting others, it's not necessary

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2020 20:03

DfE guidelines out have more or less prohibited teachers from wearing face masks. It seems schools are one (very) enclosed space where they are not required.

I don't care much, but it seems rather contradictory!

HeIenaDove · 11/05/2020 20:07

@LangClegsInSpace Youve nailed it!

KilljoysDutch · 11/05/2020 20:07

I Knew that we'd end up with a recommendation for masks pretty much everywhere else has been doing it for a while.
I Remember posting on a crafting thread on here at the beginning of lockdown that I had been making masks and my post was completely ignored unlike every other posters because the hive mind had decided that they were stupid. I feel a bit better now about being ignored Grin

I do wonder however if it will end up being enforced for you entering shops like it is in certain states of the USA and also if that would end up causing the hysteria here that it is in those states, so many angry white men with guns screaming about their rights to do as they wish with their bodies despite protesting womens rights to do the same!

bumblingbovine49 · 11/05/2020 20:10

FFS. It is soo typical of this government. Wearing masks is only effective if everyone wears them. Why the hell should I wear own to protect others in case I am asymptomatic when people are already saying they refuse to wear them . I'd say refusing to wear a mask in crowded location is selfish in the extreme

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2020 20:16

Wearing a face covering or face mask in schools or other education settings is not recommended. Face coverings may be beneficial for short periods indoors where there is a risk of close social contact with people you do not usually meet and where social distancing and other measures cannot be maintained, for example on public transport or in some shops. This does not apply to schools or other education settings. Schools and other education or childcare settings should therefore not require staff, children and learners to wear face coverings

PestymcPestFace · 11/05/2020 20:18

bumbling there seems to be a fair proportion of selfish people on Mumsnet.

I find it difficult to think why someone wouldn't want to reduce the risk they may be to others. But, I understand that we all have different values also.

PestymcPestFace · 11/05/2020 20:20

should therefore not require Piggy presumably they also should not prevent staff, children and learners from wearing face coverings

Marpan · 11/05/2020 20:20

I can’t believe so many people are like how do we know where to get them and where do we get them....your online. GOOGLE IT.

Not that hard.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/05/2020 20:22

With respect, that's your failure to see, not an accurate statement of risk reduction.

Yep, I know. Considering I don't go to the supermarket, don't use public transport and only go to the corner shop once a week If that so it's no big deal. I'll have a look on Amazon for a couple of cheap cotton scarves and wear them if I have to.

HeIenaDove · 11/05/2020 20:28

And what about those that arent online?

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2020 20:31

Guess not pesty although they seem very very keen to discourage it!

I live in one of those states, from millions of people a few hundred have complained. Millions more have just made or bought a face covering and are wearing it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/05/2020 20:39

I hadn't thought of Etsy - if I have got wear a mask I want the flamingo one!

EffieIsATrinket · 11/05/2020 20:51

Trish Greenhalgh is on Twitter. She is very much pro face coverings, not medical grade masks.

Rumboogie · 11/05/2020 21:57

@PestymcPestFace

Thank you for linking to Greenhalgh's comprehensive and interesting rebuttal of criticism of her article on facemasks for the public.

She fails to adequately answer, however, what, for me, are the most dangerous issues:

  1. Potential transfer of virus from mask to surfaces by touching.
  2. False sense of security and abandonment of social distancing - the latter she simply brushes aside as speculative, with conflicting evidence from other preventive measures
Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2020 22:02

Wow, those Etsy masks are pricy!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/05/2020 22:07

I thought that but I prefer the snood things which are even worse!

PestymcPestFace · 11/05/2020 22:32

The WHO have been giving pandemic advice for years. Here's some advice from the Jan 2020 update, just before they realised that the shit hit the fan big time and that 7.5 billion people were a few too many to provide with face masks.

With pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic spreads being a notable problem with coronavirus, we need the public to wear face coverings to stop egress (plus all the other distancing, hand washing, face washing,, clothes washing, glasses washing {can't believe nobody in this country remembers to say this} and no face touching additionally no mask touching).

If a mask fits, it is quite comfortable and does not need fiddling with. Go for ties not ear elastic, it may just be my ears but ouch - great discomfort.
