Exactly that really.

There are no road blocks. That’s why no one is stopped.

Cornwall has two sets of residents. Residents who are not Cornish but went there from another part of the uk for the peace and quiet and can be quite vocal about tourists spoiling their idea of peace. Second are Cornish people who are vocal about second home owners but are happy to sell their property to them at the maximum price.

If it’s not quiet enough there is always north Scotland. Cornish people could sell their homes to other Cornish people for a Cornish price which is lower than market value. Outsiders then only sell to outsiders.

Police have stopped people on A30 in Devon questioning them why they are travelling. I assume this may stop now

There are also quite a lot of Cornish residents unable to buy at all, never mind sell again.

I’d be really grateful if posters on this site stopped acting as if they know the opinions of all Cornish people all the time. My family and I haven’t been to the beach since the day before lockdown because we live about 20 minutes drive away from it. Following the bloody guidelines, even though it’s frustrating.

We’re not all having wonderful holiday times down here you know.

Not for long though. When were they stopped going to Wales?

I love the West Country and Devon and Cornwall are beautiful and the people are so friendly.
However, I watched a programme about the fishermen in Megavissy ( ?) ( it's spelt wrong but the programme was on bbc 2 this year) and they did moan about the tourists and second home owners mostly out pricing the locals and getting in the way! I can imagine it's a pain having your area 'invaded ' for months at a time , but they also need the tourists to keep the economy down there moving as well. It's a
Double edged sword and during this latest health crisis they must be concerned about their facilities being overwhelmed if there is a second spike in cases as there can't be that many hospitals down there compared to London.

You can drive 20 minutes to a beach and have a walk. That’s been allowed for a week or so. Please do it. People are arriving where I live to walk in the woods and on the long distance footpath. It’s allowed. So yes you can go to the beach and you should.

If the Cornish sold homes at a reduced price to other Cornish people then they could afford homes. A market within a market. That was the point. Full price to outsiders. What’s wrong with that idea?

It's not about you, it's about the people in the place where the holiday home is. You don't have the right to put them at risk.

Can I just say if I was ill in Cornwall and could get home, I would. In any circumstance at any time. I’m sorry (in advance) if I suddenly die there.

I know of a covidiot who has travelled from his London flat to his sister's house in Newport, Wales. He is Welsh, but lives in London. How did he not get stopped?

Merging houses I think is allowed under some circumstances. Pretty sure they're not pulling people over on the M4.

I hope to visit the West Country again one day , but it won't be till this crisis is over.
I love the food and the cider and how friendly the people are.

Because people lie like on school catchment areas and to get married in a church etc etc

How long does someone have to be resident in cornwall to qualify?

What the difference % between residents and 'outsiders'? why do 'outsiders' stand to make greater profits when Cornish prices are capped?

To qualify, I have no problem with people buying houses to live in their community. The housing market is what it is and there are help to buy schemes for locals etc etc

I just think second houses are essentially greedy. I guess theres a socialist in me somewhere Smile

Im also getting a bit defensive in the face of seemingly endless criticism of Cornwall on this site in recent weeks!

Why not? You can go to the beach within the guidelines, as long as you adhere to social distancing and walk for twice as long as the time spent driving. You have chosen not to which is of course fine, but the guidelines allow you to.

As I understand the You Gov info page. There is no limit (England) on how far, but you cannot stay overnight.

Well, because it seems a bit arbitrary to exercise for exactly 40 mins to justify a unnecessary journey!

We'll relax our stance a bit on that now obviously.

I just wanted to explain that being in Cornwall isn’t some nirvana of freedom and joy. We don’t all live within walking distance of the sea, or moors etc etc

@Sandybval I was expecting the locals would have stopped him, based on the comments in this thread. He's only there for the weekend now back in London.

@savehalloween even for merging households over a long weekend?

Car parks are all closed for our beaches, those 20 mins away and longer. Ditto NP, moors and woods. There has been nowhere to drive to.

Stupid question nothing has changed why an earth would you think been able to drive for a bit of exercise mean you can have a mini break.

Boris has just this second said in Parliment that the changes he announced last night/today do NOT mean people can go on holiday or visit second homes

You can visit, but you "cannot stay overnight in a second home", or hotel, hostel etc (unless hotel is accommodating nurses, care home staff etc)

Report
justasking111 · 11/05/2020 17:18

There are lots of second home owners in N Wales arrived at the beginning of lockdown, neighbours complained, police explained they had a legal right to stay there. The locals have grumbled but no-one has been confronted or threatened to my knowledge.

Yes, sorry, my bad use of 'visit' - he said/meant to stay.

They are actively encouraging day trips, this is not an accident. It is a measure to give people some more control over their own lives, some hope and adjustment from hiding behind the sofa for two months.

The moor near us is pretty much closed, being patrolled and stopping anyone in cars. Will be interesting to see if that stops. But the locals will probably have to fight off the tourists
