Now that Boris has said people can drive for exercise and leisure, you know they'll flock to seaside's, lakes, peaks, etc.
Which means if they're carriers they'll be spreading the virus to petrol stations pumps, gates, railings etc.

I don't get the logic behind him saying that tbh.

If you are worried about people visiting the countryside near where you live then stay inside. Let them have a nice walk in a beautiful environment and then they can go back to the city. You stay safely at home.

MMN123 · 10/05/2020 22:48

I agree RickOShay. Where I live 42% of all deaths in the last month have been COVID related. Wouldn’t dream of travelling anywhere at the moment. Would be nice to be able to go a couple of miles to a park rather than walking around the block but anything more at this stage is unnecessary.

Hopefully most people will be sensible.

RickOShay · 10/05/2020 22:48

They stay Charlie. They don’t go back.

supermanisdead · 10/05/2020 22:48

@MMN123

'I won't go to an entire swathe of country EVER again because during a deadly virus outbreak the locals wanted the tourists to stay away because local hospitals could not cope'

Hmmm, not easily offended??

Livelovebehappy · 10/05/2020 22:49

Here we go. It’s obvious from previous posts that people lucky enough to live in tourist spots don’t actually want tourists to visit, and the hostility has probably been there long before lockdown.

Notmyrealname855 · 10/05/2020 22:49

And we’ve had a drought so if you’re staying somewhere that’s not on the mains there will be no water! Haven’t flushed a toilet that much Envy (not envy)

RickOShay · 10/05/2020 22:49

Or rather they come and go.

justtb · 10/05/2020 22:49

I remember clearly just before lockdown people were flocking to SouthWold to get to their holiday homes/see the nice scenery etc. They actually put on local news 'please stay away from SouthWold we are old and we are vulnerable.'

OP I think you have a good point. Don't know why people keep attacking you. It should be make clear that people should stick to their local areas and not travel outside their towns!

PhilCornwall1 · 10/05/2020 22:51

I'm in a tourist hot spot and couldn't give a toss.

I would even know if they were local or not. As long as they perform the "social shimmy" to get around me when walking, who cares (not that I'm worried about that either to be honest).

RickOShay · 10/05/2020 22:52

But honestly @Livelovebehappy
How would you feel if you suddenly saw lots of different people rock up in your small town, just days after a nationwide lockdown was announced?
Every day, more people.
How would that make you feel?

supermanisdead · 10/05/2020 22:53

@Livelovebehappy

We love tourists! I love seeing my little town come alive! Nothing makes me happier than someone asking directions or a recommendation.

But when CV kicked off there was a rush to get to second homes here. And the easing of transport rules is going to mean an influx.

Our local hospitals cannot cope! They are tiny. 7 ventilators for the whole of Northern Devon.

There is zero animosity towards tourists here at all, just a need to prevent a large influx of people.

Seriously I don't understand why people take it personally when they are asked to stay away.

Happymum12345 · 10/05/2020 22:53

I agree with op.

FrangipaniBlue · 10/05/2020 22:54

It's rife here in the Lake District, we're still one of the areas with the highest cases per 100 capita.

If the idiot tourists choose to come here then meh, Darwinism innit?

London has been lovely in lockdown . No traffic jams and few people out most of the time . I’ll enjoy it while I can .

amber763 · 10/05/2020 22:57

@TJH130 England doesnt subsidise Scotland. Quick Google will tell you that. How ignorant.

People living in tourist spots should probably be concerned right now.
Gobbolinocat · 10/05/2020 22:58

I think 99% of the country has complied with 🔒 down very well.

I don't think people will be flocking anywhere and yet not socially distant.
Most people realise not to touch gates...

I don't think it will be an issue...

Nb89 · 10/05/2020 22:58

Wales is still closed. Visit Wales is still saying Visit Wales LATER.

We are still in Lockdown here in Wales. We are still.under the STAY HOME advice. We cannot drive for any non essential trips. Still being encouraged to work from home. No plans to open our school June 1st. Borises changes are for England and not changing anything in Wales. Our first minister extended our lockdown for a further 3 weeks on Friday 8th May with only a few small tweeks.

EmMac7 · 10/05/2020 23:02

UV light does indeed kill covid-19 (on surfaces, such as gates!).

“Sunlight disinfects, and the UV part of its spectrum is particularly effective at knocking out airborne pathogens.”

www.nytimes.com/2020/05/07/science/ultraviolet-light-coronavirus.html

ICU doctors in New York used to UV light to sterilise PPE they had to -re-use due to shortages.

So those rabbiting on about outdoor gates—it’s a very, very unlikely source of infection.

Becca19962014 · 10/05/2020 23:03

stranger charged by the ambulance trust as "the health board cannot afford the transport bill" which translates as "we fucked up moving all services to South Wales and assuming everyone would have family and friends to take them to appointments for free or could "just" get a bus - the only buses round here now are school transport"

It's literally hundreds of pounds to travel to the next nearest hospital by ambulance transport (usually taxi and you pay 80% of the fare).

It is really shit.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 10/05/2020 23:05

I don't think it will be an issue...

Pictures from.this weekend past show plenty of non distancing gatherings.
Once people think they can drive wherever they like, just as Boris said, instead of pizza and wine in local parks, it'll be pizza and wine anywhere they fancy.

I get why people in rural communities are scared with ‘foreigners’ coming in and potentially bringing CV with them - it comes from protecting the small community and also fear of the unknown. Many of these people won’t know many people who have had CV, like those in London will have done. However people need to rationalise and remember that just walking through a field maintaining good distance isn’t going to transmit it. If a tourist opens a gate and a local follows, would that local not have sanitised their hands anyway given the current situation? By allowing second home owners to travel, will it really place too much of a burden on local hospitals when 80% + of people who get CV don’t go to hospital - and we would hope that only a small minority may catch CV while at their second home. How many second home owners are there in the UK anyway?! A tiny fraction. Are they all about to jump in their cars on the motorway? I doubt it. I don’t like the “them and us” attitude of locals to second home owners. They claim to hate tourists / second home owners currently and tell them to stay away yet when it comes to Thursday clapping, I noticed on the local Facebook group of my holiday home village that all the locals were standing on the village green really close together - definitely not social distancing. I hope Boris clarifies that it’s ok to travel to second homes in the next week or so.

Try reading what I wrote.

No objections to people not wanting visitors during COVID. Wholeheartedly agree.

However, sadly, many people have expressed views that make clear the detest all urban dwellers. That isn’t about COVID. It’s about people’s true feelings being expressed in a crisis and that has primarily been from the Cornwall and Devon folk.

But of course this is with a background of having family living there expressing the same sentiments over many years and telling me that’s what most people there feel. That didn’t offend me at the time. I didn’t believe it.

Now I do.

So I am offended. And I likely won’t be going back to those counties.

For the year or so after all restrictions on travel are lifted, I’ll stick to city breaks mostly - we quite fancy doing that for a while and have rarely done UK city breaks and it’s important to support the urban tourist economies. Theatres and museums and other attractions have suffered terribly and hotels and restaurants in cities are on their knees just like in country areas. Possibly worse.

After that I expect we will resume countryside trips - but yes, far less than before. This has been an eye opener. I had never sat and calculated how much money I spent in rural tourist areas before. I’ve always preferred ‘staycations’ and that hasn’t changed. But I think I’d rather spend them around people more like me - other city folk!!

SusieOwl4 · 10/05/2020 23:07

@Nb89

But schools veered won’t open till June either and only if criteria met , so still might happen at same time .

Silvergreen · 10/05/2020 23:08

I've always wanted to go to Cornwall, especially as the next year or two will mean holidays at home, but it just sounds like such an unwelcoming and unfriendly place.
