People living in tourist spots should probably be concerned right now.

Now that Boris has said people can drive for exercise and leisure, you know they'll flock to seaside's, lakes, peaks, etc.
Which means if they're carriers they'll be spreading the virus to petrol stations pumps, gates, railings etc.

I don't get the logic behind him saying that tbh.

The sun does not kill the virus if it did we wouldn't be having outbreaks in hot climates where the weather is currently 40c everyday. This is not a seasonal virus

This. Its unaffected by changes in temperature.

Bagelsandbrie · 10/05/2020 20:33

There is another side to this in that if people are driving to more rural and remote places from somewhere like London then people will generally be more spread out and less crowds etc. That has to be a good thing- looking at the photos of all the crowds in the parks in London if even 20% of those people travelled elsewhere that’s going to have an impact on the spread of the virus.

And I say that as someone who lives in a bit of a rural tourist hotspot.

CoronaMoaner · 10/05/2020 20:33

I’m so glad they’ve said unlimited exercise. I was actually holding out for that. I’ll be taking the kids out much more now, driving for a change of scene. I hope it will do us all a bit of good.
Previously we just went out once, first thing in the morning, walking from our front door each day.

HellsAngel81 · 10/05/2020 20:33

Tourists are Grockles in Devon, and Emmits in Cornwall.

Oakmaiden · 10/05/2020 20:34

Well, this is a nice little thread. Hmm

userxx · 10/05/2020 20:37

@Mippo 🤣🤣 I'll try and contain myself.

1981m · 10/05/2020 20:38

I am assuming car parks and local beauty spots and beaches will stay closed to prevent that.

Legoandloldolls · 10/05/2020 20:40

But nothing will be open come Wednesday. So people are extremely unlikely to drive hours away from their house to somewhere effectively shut and then drive home again.

Plus the whole petrol pump thing. I'm getting fed up by the repeated assumption that people who can not six weeks without food shopping are murderers. I can walk to a shop, my kids have to eat. I have to buy food.

Round near me in a area of outstanding natural beauty, the car parks are shut on common land, national trust land etc. Why can Cornwall and the lakes just try that?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 10/05/2020 20:41

btw, non tourists are just as likely to spread it as tourists are.

Not really... Non tourists don't tend to carry it around the country now do they?

Our town has just shut down its fb community page due to the sheer volume of residents losing their shit about the tourists returning. Tourist hot spots are fucked really. We’re at 85% job losses and people can no longer afford to live here without jobs. Re-opening is both a blessing and a curse. We don’t have an ICU. We’ve been very fortunate with our cases, probably because of the timing of lockdown, but there is a massive (new) outbreak in the nearest city, and that’s where they will all be coming from. Still, at least we won’t be able to bitch about it on fb. Grin

Mezzan1ne · 10/05/2020 20:43

Surely they’ll get people to stay within their county. Madness otherwise. Will cause a huge amount or resentment if tourists don’t stick to social distancing and make it impossible for locals to actually get out more.

Legoandloldolls · 10/05/2020 20:43

I wish Cornwall and Devon would devolve too at this rate. They so want to protect their borders from us dirty out of towners.

SquishySquirmy · 10/05/2020 20:43

I do think that driving for hours to a beauty spot is unwise.
I am lucky to live in a semi rural suburb, not a beauty spot at all but easy enough to go for socially distant walks, and see fields, sheep, woods etc. The pavements are wide, plenty of people on them but it is not so busy that you can't move out of their way.
I don't need to drive anywhere, so I won't.

But I know people who live in much more built up areas for whom exercising on the doorstep means sharing very busy streets and parks.
Driving somewhere else allows them the space to avoid people. And also leaves slightly more space on their local streets for their neighbours who don't drive.

I cannot begrudge people that!

Maybe it means that the place they drive to is slightly busier, but still much quieter than urban parks. I can understand the mild annoyance of people in those areas.... But it's still far, far less than what many people have been dealing with in the last couple of months!

It is a bit rich to be pissed off that "your" hill has other people on it now, when so many people have barely seen a tree for weeks.

attackedbycritters · 10/05/2020 20:43

It doesn't like uv light so it does not live as long out in the open as it does indoors

Biancadelrioisback · 10/05/2020 20:45

But you've been allowed to drive for exercise for ages?

ErrolTheDragon · 10/05/2020 20:45

The problem will be if you get people travelling from hotspots (like London and the South East) to places like Devon and Cornwall which, so far, have had very few cases.

Given that there will be nowhere they can stay, that would mean a hell of a long day trip. No cafes, maybe nowhere you can park, loos may not be open ...

It would be good to have a re-clarification about reasonable drive time:exercise time ratio ... given that the purpose of the drive is still to exercise.

Mezzan1ne · 10/05/2020 20:46

They’ll have nowhere to stay for now as everything is closed but when hospitality is open with flights still a no and 2 weeks of quarantine after a flight holiday spots in U.K. are going to be a nightmare. They’ll be packed out. They really need to sort something out.

Notmyrealname855 · 10/05/2020 20:46

Tricky because we’re in a tourist spot (Lakes) but have had so many terrible cases - and it started early. We’re so tired of it. Sadly quite a high death rate, and healthy (really healthy!) 40+ yr olds still trying to recover and having a shit time trying to breath still.

I think people should be allowed out though. Please avoid places with gates! We use them... otherwise it won’t affect us... though our health services here might get stretched... just don’t use our gates :)

BackInTime · 10/05/2020 20:47

I’m so glad they’ve said unlimited exercise. I was actually holding out for that**

Have people actually been strictly adhering to this?

Russellbrandshair · 10/05/2020 20:48

Not really... Non tourists don't tend to carry it around the country now do they

There are key workers all over the country who could be spreading it. I can wear gloves to pump petrol. Problem solved. Everything is still shut- tourists won’t be able to stay overnight or go to shops currently.

Abraid2 · 10/05/2020 20:49

supermanisdead

It doesn’t seem the most welcoming place to visitors judging by the vocabulary! Even without CV. Shame really as it is lovely and the people seemed nice but perhaps they would be happier if their beaches were less crowded every summer.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 10/05/2020 20:50

Whoch hill was it that saw its busiest day in history just after the lockdown started? I forget.
100s of people turned up as I recall, was one of the reasons the police became involved and had to start monitoring peoples movements.
If people are that dumb then, I can't see that they'll be better now.

museumum · 10/05/2020 20:51

This is the beach we drove to the week before lockdown. When everyone was ranting about “covidiots” going to beaches.
Yes the car park was full, but we don’t go round touching other peoples cars. We were never within 20 metres of another family.

People living in tourist spots should probably be concerned right now.
MoaningMinniee · 10/05/2020 20:57

Haven't yet looked at the news but it sounds like the usual hopelessly confused waffle that anyone can interpret to fit their own agenda. Here's a bit of clear information. The West Country is CLOSED. None of us are travelling more than about ten or fifteen miles, often less, and that's only because that's how far it is to the nearest shop/pharmacy etc. We will be delighted to see you all again... in several months. For now, please stay away.

BelleSausage · 10/05/2020 20:58

So, my village is utterly fucked. We fall on the border of three counties and are still somehow 45 mins away from the nearest hospital. We’re also a beauty spot with lots and lots of lovely country walks.

Except, most of these walks involve narrow paths and the car parks are too small so people park on the residential streets. Summer is often a nightmare because you can’t get into the only supermarket because it is utterly rammed with tourists- ditto the restaurants.

A very high proportion of the residents are elderly or vulnerable.

So, as of Wednesday we cannot go out for our exercise because we’re going to be mobbed. The police have spent the past six weeks turning back cars from London and Birmingham at the cross roads.

If you are going to walk in the country- stay away from popular routes, wear gloves to open gates and don’t park on the pavements in residential streets- making it impossible for elderly residents to get past.
