Not that it matters to me personally, being in Scotland but that was just the biggest load of waffley waffle.
Not even a mention of meeting other households.

@hearhoover
He did mention secondary he said those with exams next year , so year 10 & 12 would get time with their teachers before summer , guess more accurate details to follow

Easilyanxious · 11/05/2020 00:17

Technically when out exercising now we could bump in to people we know and talk , I know I have seen people I know out and about and have had a brief couple minute chat obviously from a distance and normally more than 2 metres but was there anything stopping us before if so I missed that bit , obviously I didn't stand there for half hour but quick chat how are you etc I assumed was ok

Easilyanxious · 11/05/2020 00:27

It hasn't actually changed that much I guess
More exercise allowed ( same as Scotland ) but little more allowed such as sitting in park - probably much needed by those who live in a flat
And also the driving for exercise bit but I'm fully expected that to be restricted on how far you can go?
The going back to work again constriction etc all can't work from home , but was still if you can please continue .
I think we probably forget how many people actually are still having to go to woke and have throughout ? Delivery drivers ,Postmen , social workers , shop workers etc

@Flaxmeadow, seriously? Clear? A good statement? You must have watched a different broadcast to me🤔

Flaxmeadow · 11/05/2020 01:04

seriously? Clear? A good statement? You must have watched a different broadcast to me

If you cannot comprehend the broadcast or the transcript of it, or the papers, or read the regulations that will be available soon (tomorrow?) on the government site, then it's probably best that you stay in for your own good

Bool · 11/05/2020 05:22

@Flaxmeadow some people don’t want to understand. They want a police state. Much easier if somebody else takes control of their life.

Classicbrunette · 11/05/2020 06:12

We weren’t expecting great change. What did you expect ? Think about it. What part is unclear ? Perhaps you need to hear it again.

Makeuptherules · 11/05/2020 06:23

People seemed to miss the bit where he said more detail to follow. I also understood perfectly. All the questions about can I do this or that, the answer is no if it doesn't involve the things he mentioned. Honestly not that hard to understand. Once we prove we can do the next stage more will also be released but I wouldn't hold my breath because everyone who has broken the rules already are going to completely take the piss even more now so there will probably be a massive spike.

For those asking about nurseries; I'm assuming that private day nursery workers are in the group being encouraged back to work - they can't do their job from home- so would expect nurseries to reopen imminently.

I know our nursery is losing £1000s per week at the moment so I can't see why she would give notice of nursery reopening and full fees; if parents don't want to send their children they'd still be contractually obliged to pay if the nursery is open.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 11/05/2020 06:26

You must be a thick if you didn’t understand that. Best stay indoors then.

lyralalala · 11/05/2020 06:35

Some people on here could do with a course in basic manners.

It’s hardly surprising people are confused when Boris announced no contact with people outside your own household, in fact said the fine would be higher for those doing so when he mentioned sports, but the news programmes straight after included being allowed to meet with one other person from another household as long as you social distance

When the government gives out two contradictory messages people will be confused

Anyone would think that was the point

Classicbrunette · 11/05/2020 06:46

The problem will be that people will meet friends in the park and pretend their from their own household.

Casino218 · 11/05/2020 06:51

So you can sit 2 metres apart from a friend in a park from a different household but you can only play tennis with immediate familyHmm

Pomegranatepompom · 11/05/2020 06:59

I’d hope that people would take responsibility for their own actions and try and limit exposure still. Going to work doesn’t mean it’s safe to see your 80 year old nan. You can only hope that people are sensible.

Oblomov20 · 11/05/2020 07:08

It was waffley.
But it was clear.
I don't understand the claims of it not being clear.

It's done for economic reasons. He wants people back at work. If they can. He cant afford to pay their furlough portal wages much longer.

What's hard to understand?

Well that was clear as mud, so is meeting family allowed now or what??
frumpety · 11/05/2020 07:22

You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household.

You must obey the rules on social distancing and to enforce those rules we will increase the fines for the small minority who break them.

I think the drive to other destinations is a bit too open to interpretation but imagine there will be more detail given today ?

If you are talking to a friend or family member outside in their garden and are more than two metres apart , how does that increase the risk of spreading the virus any more than going to a supermarket, which is essentially a big box of strangers, often less than 2 metres apart ? I can see why people would question the science of one being permissable and the other not. I do understand that one would be classed as being an essential journey and the other not.

lyralalala · 11/05/2020 07:25

For those saying it was clear, especially those being snarky to people confused can you not understand how the difference between the briefing we got and the one the journalists got (and therefore the reporting on all the channels after) has confused people?

Boris said “ 'From this Wednesday we want to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise.
You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household
You must obey the rules on social distancing and to enforce those rules we will increase the fines for the small minority who break them.'

However journalists including Chris Madon from the BBC and Robert Peston were briefed differently - ITV's Robert Peston summed it up as: 'So it turns out a maximum of one person per household can meet OUTSIDE and at a 2m distance from a maximum of one person from a different household.
So you can see your mum, without your dad, and only if she isn't elderly or frail and needing to be shielded. Clear?'

Those two things directly contradict each other

lyralalala · 11/05/2020 07:26

I think the drive to other destinations is a bit too open to interpretation but imagine there will be more detail given today ?

Apparently that’s going to be that you can drive anywhere else in England, but not Scotland or Wales and you must return home in the evening. So no weekends away or holidays.

ginsparkles · 11/05/2020 07:27

Dominic Raab is apparently about to speak on bbc breakfast, so that might help clear up some of these questions.

lyralalala · 11/05/2020 08:20

Dominic Raab just said you can meet up, socially distanced, with other people not from your household on BBC breakfast

He was specifically asked "Can I meet my Mum in the morning and my Dad in the afternoon?" and said yes, as long as you stay 2m apart and use common sense

KingscoteStaff · 11/05/2020 08:36

Thank heavens for Mishal Husain asking sensible questions.

Bool · 11/05/2020 08:44

That is England advice though. NS is on BBC now saying that is not allowed in Scotland.

Bool · 11/05/2020 08:44

And also not to travel to England to see relatives either. Stay home.

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2020 08:47

This is an absolute car crash.

Lots of stuff omitted from Johnson's statement but briefed to journalists (apparently in the 50 page document which is to be published at 2pm today).

And Raab is now briefing the media and contradictung what the PM said last night.

Anyone saying this is clear, isn't paying attention to the full picture.

It's a good lesson in how not to communicate important messages as a government. The lack of leadership is appalling.

It leaves the public in a position where different people will hear different things and think the rules are different (because you have different members of the goverment actually contradicting each other) and that's going to lead to tension or even conflict on the streets (with both parties actively thinking they are right because they listened attentively to different things and have legitimate reason to believe they are right).

The police are now left completely powerless. How can you fine someone if someone has the defence that they had reasonable cause to believe they were following the law correctly? (police case won't stand up well in court).

We therefore have no way of enforcing very much despite talk of increasing fines.

It's appalling.

Absolute masterclass in how not to communicate.
