Are people really asking what it means...

Lots of posts on here asking what "stay alert" means. Surely these people are not really that thick to ask what it meanHmmHmm

It’s not that simple. Studies have show it can be transmitted through air systems. Someone sitting in the other end of the carriage could get it from the air system. Very sad times

SnoozyLou · 11/05/2020 01:46

It means it’s too bad you got the virus. You should have tried harder.

Isn’t it a bit of a joke that before a legitimate track and trace system is implemented, people are being sent back to work? It is putting the cart before the horse. It’s like going back to the start.

But if it makes you feel superior to think you’re so much more aware than anyone questioning the logic, knock yourself out.

SnoozyLou · 11/05/2020 01:54

It also means, work from home if you can, but If you can’t, that’s too bad, because we’re running out of money. Go to work if you have to, but don’t use public transport. Except if you need to of course. Now we’ve put adequate measures in place to protect your safety, simply by telling you this, so if you get sick now, it’s on you.

ZombieFan · 11/05/2020 01:59

It needs to be remembered that half the population have a below average intelligence, a lot of people need things in words of one sensible.

FairPoint · 11/05/2020 02:02

Every day as a pedestrian or a driver you have to stay alert. What to? Well I was taught all that at age 3-7 approx (never have driven but say 17-30 y). The human brain is capable of learning at any age. We are all learning, I hope, the details and nuances and common sense of being alert to protecting all from raising R0 unnecessarily.

Easilyanxious · 11/05/2020 02:07

Yes very strange especially as I've been reading on here so many posters who knew exactly when we should of locked down , how and everything else about this virus

mrbob · 11/05/2020 02:19

I think it is the British equivalent of #scottyfrommarketing in Australia who just kept saying “be Australian and do the right thing” without really expanding on what that might be

Flaxmeadow · 11/05/2020 02:30

Millions of people are already working and have been all through the lockdown!!!

EmeraldShamrock · 11/05/2020 02:40

Those who have to travel on public transport will be terrified. I'm surprised masks are not been mentioned, even home made ones, I'd wear sunglasses too, with a handbag of anti virus wipes and cream, an umbrella to avoid random coughing.
I hope passenger numbers are reduced to maintain social distancing.

Flaxmeadow · 11/05/2020 02:44

People are already travelling on public transport and have been all the way through the lockdown

I honestly don't get this thread. Do people think there is nobody working or using public transport already?

EmeraldShamrock · 11/05/2020 03:18

Right now the amount of people travelling is much lower than usual. Once more workers/businesses get back they'll be much busier making it harder to maintain social distancing.

SetYourselfOnFire · 11/05/2020 03:29

Cowards. They chose money over human lives but don't have the evil balls to say it out loud like comic book villains (or Americans) so they just hint vaguely. Lack of leadership kills.

Bool · 11/05/2020 05:12

@SetYourselfOnFire you do realise that a crashed economy means people dying don’t you?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 11/05/2020 07:33

Do the things you have to do.
Don’t do the things you don’t have to do.

SnoozyLou · 11/05/2020 08:06

Millions of people are already working and have been all through the lockdown!!!

Yes I know. My partner is one of them 🙄

It’s like everything else. You MUST do this. Unless you can’t do this, then it’s ok to do that. But if you get it, it’s only because you didn’t do THIS. You were warned, after all.

InOutofmymind · 11/05/2020 08:07

@Bool We've not got CV under control, stil 1000s of new infections & 100s of deaths everyday and then there is the care home crisis.

He hasn't met any of his own 5 tests but is relaxing restrictions...

An economy cannot function if a v serious disease is still prevalent in the community., the changes BJ announced are huge, they are not incremental.

SnoozyLou · 11/05/2020 08:11

They won’t talk about masks since they haven’t got enough for health workers let alone the public. I agree with you though.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/05/2020 08:19

Except he hasn't relaxed anything other than the 'house arrest' element of lockdown. Social distancing still applies.

So, before anything else changes we get to go outside a bit more. Employers get a bit more time to check their work arrangements and PHE etc watch the numbers.

If there is no spike in 2-3 weeks then we move on a bit, or back a bit if there is.

That's it! It is a reactive plan, one that continues to have infection rates front and foremost. Other countries are trying to be proactive, and given the situation I'm not sure that is possible!

What we actually have is a government who are not giving us dates but are giving us an explanation. We have already been told what will happen if R increases. What happens in countries where a specific date has been given?

Stay at home, consider any changes, talk to your boss. Do what you can do safely. Wait for the next step...

And yes, the onus is on us. It has to be. We have to be part of the solution as it is our lives, livelihoods etc. The virus isn't going anywhere. We have to learn how we can live with it.

CherryPavlova · 11/05/2020 08:29

No the lack of intellectual rigour comes into play when one drills into the details of such ambiguity. It actually means nothing at all ‘stay alert’ with nice green borders is a fudge to reduce government liability.

“I told people to stay alert but they misinterpreted what I said so it’s their fault the virus has increased the number of victims again. Not my fault people are dying. People did all sorts of things we didn’t tell them to do.”

Good example being to ramp up VE Day activity, set a big jingoistic, all pull together agenda ( when most people have no clue as to the meaning of VE day) and then abdicate responsibility when idiots start doing the conga and having drunken singalongs.

The messages are extremely unclear. How can one stay alert to a virus?

Bool · 11/05/2020 08:49

@cherrypavlova sometimes life isn’t black and white. They are trying to balance loss of life due to a virus with loss of life due to economic downturn with mental health and behavioural factors. What that means is that there isn’t really a black and white solution. So there are guidelines. I am sure there are many many scenarios that are not covered in those guidelines so we need to use our common sense aware of how a virus spreads. They are giving us the guidance and then expecting us to use our intelligence and common sense to interpret it.

lynsey91 · 11/05/2020 09:25

Boris lovers pretending that he spoke sense and anyone who says he didn't is thick!

We can all use our common sense and mine tells me to stay in and go nowhere as I have done for 7 weeks now. Unfortunately lots of people have employers who will be telling them they have to go to work even if it means travelling on public transport and if they don't go they lose their job.

Even if they are happy to go back to work, as I said before, what if they have children and no one to look after them?

SnoozyLou · 11/05/2020 10:11

@lynsey91 I took it to mean stay at home if you can, but if you can’t, we’ll that’s just too bad because the government won’t be shelling out anymore. My partner’s work stayed open all along as it’s a key industry. If you didn’t go, you didn’t get paid (although in fairness they have put in place pretty stringent social distancing). A lot of people have been stuck between a rock and a hard place all along, and it looks set to get a whole lot worse.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/05/2020 10:45

The issue with employers is all part of the changes though. Some employers will also apply common sense and make all adjustments necessary to get as many staff back to work safely as possible.

Some won't. But that isn't anyone's fault but theirs.

Some won't be able to. Like restaurants etc. They'll get extended furlough type payments. More or less will be available as things change, as it has over the last couple of months.

But within the guidelines, that's the 50 pages to be published today not the introduction givenast night, there will be more detail.

That's another reason it's obvious BJ didn't say we all had to go back to work this morning. That and furlough still exists!

Kazzyhoward · 11/05/2020 10:48

Right now the amount of people travelling is much lower than usual. Once more workers/businesses get back they'll be much busier making it harder to maintain social distancing.

There will still be millions of people working from home, or shielding, etc., so whilst numbers commuting will inevitably increase, they'll be nowhere near "normal" levels. Nor will all the workers in the catering, hotel, hospitality industries be returning to work any time soon, so that's another huge group who won't be returning to public transport.

Kazzyhoward · 11/05/2020 10:52

The messages are extremely unclear. How can one stay alert to a virus?

Wash your hands regularly and before touching your face or eating.

Maintain 2m social distancing

Avoid crowded places

Don't touch objects touched by others except with gloves

Wear a mask if you want

Open your eyes and keep away from other people who appear not to be respecting social distancing (such as joggers/cyclists)

All pretty much common sense really isn't it??
