Lots of posts on here asking what "stay alert" means. Surely these people are not really that thick to ask what it meanHmmHmm

use your common sense, keep your wits about you. Remember the social distancing

*but only “if possible” despite our R rate being only just below 1. This is the best way to power us into a need for a second lockdown which would be catastrophic by any measure.

Lostvoiced · 10/05/2020 16:48

@peachesancream
Yep. I'm not an economist and I'm not gonna pretend to be, but the system we have is not working. So many obscenely rich get away with paying fuck all tax. How about an emergency "pay your damn taxes" law for a start?
I'm not going to pretend to have the answers, but I don't think that the way we're handling it now is the best or only way.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/05/2020 16:49

I do despair of people. We are going to be given more details tonight, and possibly a document giving more details will be published and more detail will be given over the next few days.

They can't keep the stay home message if they want businesses and possibly schools to open.

Why are people being so obtuse?

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 16:49

It would have been brilliant if the slogan was 'Use your common sense'. But I think people would ask what that meant as well.

ProseccoSupernova · 10/05/2020 16:50

I have found my people! I honestly despair of what the country has come to if people can’t even come up with the shred of common sense required to interpret what it means!

Some examples for those who really are that stupid to come up with some themselves:
Don’t sneeze over someone else
Don’t stand close to someone if you have no clue who they are or their recent health history
Don’t go out just for the sake of it
Wash your hands
Work from home IF YOU CAN
Don’t go snogging a random stranger

HeronLanyon · 10/05/2020 16:50

I know how to be alert in all sorts of circs. I have no idea what it means via a vis an invisible virus. I can imagine how I will interpret to so I ‘stay safe’ but that’s the problem we can’t all have an individual I interprétation of it. My alert might be someone else’s hyper-vigilant. Their alert might be my careless etc.

helpfulperson · 10/05/2020 16:52

Ok, if it's so clear - can I visit my mum tomorrow, can I drive and walk up a mountain, can my local coffee shop open for sit in, can the bridal wear shop open, etc, etc.

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 16:52

I am printing that off @ProseccoSupernova and will keep it about my person so i don't forget, or get confused. Grin

SmileEachDay · 10/05/2020 16:52

Those of you saying it is “really clear”.

Why do you suppose they chose to include the phrase “where possible” and what impact do you think that might have on employees?

SmileyClare · 10/05/2020 16:53

Love your examples Prosecco hopefully they all fit on the front of Boris' podium thing when he speaks tonight. Grin

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/05/2020 16:53

helpfulperson you really do need spoon feeding don’t you?

FirTree31 · 10/05/2020 16:53

This is such a nasty thread, I can only assume that you all feel better about yourselves when you put others down which is disheartening, or lack of social intelligence.

People can be educated and confused, people can use common sense but still require clear direction, people can want accept/want the lock down to be lifted and still be concerned or apprehensive or panicked if they have dependents that are still off school and can't be left at home.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/05/2020 16:53

Listen to what Boris says tonight @helpfulperson. Why aren't people getting this? This is not the roadmap

ProseccoSupernova · 10/05/2020 16:54

Helpfulperson.. how about you watch the tv at 7pm and see if any of those questions are answered then. I would expect (hope) we will then know a rough timescale for when you can do those things,

feelingverylazytoday · 10/05/2020 16:54

Still no one has told me what to be alert to
The virus and the risk of transmission
You can't see the virus
And? We can't see lots of things. They still exist though.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/05/2020 16:55

For those who have no common sense I suggest you start with Prosecco list, and add to it when you hear other people’s ideas.

SmileEachDay · 10/05/2020 16:55

ineed

You’re right, it isn’t. It’s been put out there before BJ’s announcement and it will be many, many people’s take away regardless of what is said.

HeronLanyon · 10/05/2020 16:56

Why so nasty on this thread. Surely if people are saying it’s not clear then it’s not clear !

nellodee · 10/05/2020 16:56

People are not being dense, it's a purposefully vague message and it's crap. "Stay alert" changes the emphasis from changing personal behaviours to accommodating external risk. It's a get out. It's a nudge. It's bullshit. We're not being stupid, we're being alert to propaganda.

Abbccc · 10/05/2020 16:56

So,eerm, can I go and see my friends...?

peachesancream · 10/05/2020 16:56

So many people on these threads saying the Gov are doing it wrong etc but no one willing to actually put forward their own plan of action of what they'd change. This is an unprecedented situation for our country but some will never be happy. Solutions not problems, you can't sit there saying they're doing a crap job if you don't offer a better solution!

cakeallday · 10/05/2020 16:57

Nicola Sturgeon doesn't know what it means.

I don't know what it means.

Too many people didn't know what STAY HOME means and that is less intellectually challenging. They went to parks, beaches and did the conga...

MrSheenandMe · 10/05/2020 16:57

Deliberately misunderstanding. Want to trash the government and want to stay at home and be paid for it.

It is obvious - and we will all interpret it slightly differently depending where we live and what our circumstances are - surely that is part of the point.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/05/2020 16:58

Ok, if it's so clear - can I visit my mum tomorrow, can I drive and walk up a mountain, can my local coffee shop open for sit in, can the bridal wear shop open, etc, etc

I expect that the rules that say what sort of shops that can open and other guidance will be updated to answer questions like this.

ProseccoSupernova · 10/05/2020 16:58

Cakeallday... of course they knew what it meant, they just chose to ignore it!
