So basically the government are removing themselves?

So Boris has just tweeted what I presume is going to be announced later. To me it is the government removing the responsibility from themselves so that they can blame to public when a second wave occurs. All very vague and unhelpful!

So basically the government are removing themselves?

Sounds like reasonable advice really. We all protect ourselves as best we can. Be aware and try and make sensible decisions.

Stopmenow123 · 10/05/2020 15:21

Eh? What are you complaining about?

Bathbedandbeyond · 10/05/2020 15:22

Until there’s a vaccine, our only option is a slow move towards her immunity to ensure that health services can cope. I think that’s effectively what that poster suggests? Smile

mildlymiffed · 10/05/2020 15:22

I'm with you OP. Stay alert is a rubbish message against an invisible virus. At least stay home was an instruction. Behaviourally, how do people adhere to staying alert. Will be huge variances.

Mamamia456 · 10/05/2020 15:23

Well what do you want them to do. We can't stay in lockdown indefinitely, people are starting to get fed up already.

SpringBlossomIsBeautiful · 10/05/2020 15:23

Take responsibility for yourself & your family. The government can’t & shouldn’t nanny us a day longer.

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 15:23

@Bathbedandbeyond to me it is a clear move towards the first idea which was herd immunity.

Posting vague guidelines will not help anyone. Remember the debarkle about driving to exercise because it was vague I can only imagine it would get worse now!

The government should be taking responsibility not say well you know we tried but off you go!

OP posts:
Sandybval · 10/05/2020 15:26

What's vague about it? What would you like? Everyone to be fully controlled by the state? Or accept that the vast majority of people have the cognitive ability to control their actions, and there are plenty of places to find the information and therefore it's up to people how they act? There are plenty of things we can blame the government for in all of this, I'm not sure this is one of them. If people do decide to act in a manner we have been told not to, then yes, that is their fault and responsibility.

WobblyAllOver · 10/05/2020 15:26

Seems sensible to me unless you want to hide in your house potentially forever and have no contact with anyone. Lots of people are still working outside the home, many more need to return to work over the coming weeks.

If other people want to follow the 'stay at home' message then they can but I am happy to see a move to going out which I think this is about.

mildlymiffed · 10/05/2020 15:26

Just wait- we've still got high numbers.... Unlike other countries who've controlled it better. second wave anyone?

Thymelord · 10/05/2020 15:27

Absolute idiocy changing the message from stay at home to stay alert. People will now take it to mean do what you like.

SpringBlossomIsBeautiful · 10/05/2020 15:28

@princesstwinkle - how does that look to you ? We CANNOT stay at home any longer. The country has to go back to work. Many people simply do not understand the damage to our economy.
So observe SD & get on with it

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 15:28

@mildlymiffed exactly cases are still over 6000 each day.

It's herd immunity and will be responsible for lots of deaths.

This thread is the one you want op www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3904731-What-does-STAY-ALERT-mean-to-you

Shelby2010 · 10/05/2020 15:29

So does this mean lockdown is officially over? Just maintain social distancing when out?

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 15:30

@SpringBlossomIsBeautiful you only have to look at the arguments on MN regarding rules etc.

It says limit contact for some limit could mean only seeing someone 2 times a week for others it could only be seeing them twice a month.

The economy is going to be hard hit even more if we have to go into a second lockdown as people will be even more cautious about going out and about then they are now

OP posts:
Footywife · 10/05/2020 15:32

@SpringBlossomIsBeautiful Well said! People are to quick to point the finger at the government....but this pandemic affects everyone and we all need to take some responsibility so we can get through it.

SpringBlossomIsBeautiful · 10/05/2020 15:33

@princesstwinkle which is why I asked you for your opinion in what the government should do ? Continue lockdown, continue to pay furlough ? Continue with grants ? Continue to pay doctors to twiddle their thumbs because wards are empty whilst patients desperately need procedures but they have been cancelled?

helpfulperson · 10/05/2020 15:35

So can any business that wants to reopen if they think they can manage social distancing?

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 15:36

@SpringBlossomIsBeautiful furlough has been extended till June anyway so lockdown didn't have to be lifted until that date if were being specific.

They need to be much clearer imo. Lifting things gradually would've been much better over a couple of weeks than effectively lifting everything at once.

E.g today some shops could open as long as they can social distance, you can exercise twice a day, you can have socially distanced weddings etc then as the weeks go on add to this.

If you lift everything at once in 2 weeks time you will face another wave and then be in lockdown again!

OP posts:
attackedbycritters · 10/05/2020 15:36

Yes they need t9 continue all those things for a few more weeks until the number infected falls to a manageable level

And the more people push it now, the more likely a few more weeks turns into a month or more

ProseccoSupernova · 10/05/2020 15:38

Whatever they do, the government will never satisfy everyone. Some people want full lockdown, some want to get on with life.

This advice gives people a small element of control to make their own decisions as to how to handle the next stage.

The rules were completely clear under the initial lockdown but still people couldn’t understand them, so I don’t blame the government for trying to put some sense of control back in the hands of the public seeing as everyone thinks they know bloody better.

pigsDOfly · 10/05/2020 15:39

Limit contact with other people? Pretty meaningless isn't it. Which people? Family? friends? The postman? The hairdresser? And how much contact is too much contact?

Stay 2 metres away 'if possible'. So what suddenly happened to keeping 2 metres apart at all times? Does the virus know that it is no longer contagious when you get closer than 2 metres?

I agree OP. Sounds pretty much like the government is saying 'it's up to you folks. 'We won't be held responsible for the shit storm that might follow when you all start going back to normal.'

Sounds very much like they have no idea how to get us out of lockdown so are completely abrogating their responsibilities.

I know that's how Johnson seems to live his life but he's supposed to be in charge of our government and in a democracy governments are supposed to do what's best for the people of the country they govern.

Hey ho. As a poster said on another thread: you elect a clown, you get a circus.

I hope for something better at 7 tonight, but maybe I won't hold my breath.

KaptenKrusty · 10/05/2020 15:39

Fucking hell - just wait 3 more hours and you will have all the info instead of stressing about what they may or may not say

Tbh - it would be better if they leave it up to us - I’m happy to take the risk and go back to normal - If you are not - then you stay home and don’t mix with anyone else and keep yourself safe!

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 15:40

In addition to all of this why the hell would he tweet this before officially announcing anything!!!
