I know there will be a roadmap of milestones but...

What does everyone think will be eased first and do you think it will be live from tomorrow (Monday)?

I think more return to work most to carry on working from home where possible and maybe be allowed to visit family at 2 metre distance.

So

Return to work from tomorrow if possible by private transport for essential businesses such as construction and manufacturing

Same household members can now go out for longer but still to observe social distancing

Schools for years reception, 1, 6, 10, 12 to return after half term. 10 - 12 dates not defined.

Businesses such as hospitality to re-open in July. Again some restrictions to be confirmed in place.

MagisCapulus · 10/05/2020 19:25

"In the next weeks and months we will hopefully meet the 5 tests criteria"

So does that mean weeks and months if lockdown??

Flaxmeadow · 10/05/2020 19:25

perhaps we weren't watching the same thing

What didn't you understand

Manufacturing and construction etc back to work
Avoid public transport
Non essential shops still closed for now,
Fines to increase
Unlimited exercise
Can sit in parks
Schools to open by phases in June (if all goes well)
Some hospitality, pubs, restaurants etc july (if all goes well )
Still practice social distance
Non essential shops June if all goes well

That newsreader, who was reading from a clipboard afterwards, said we can meet up with people as long as we social distance. She was also talking about going fishing, to the beach. I thought she also said “allowed to go in ponds” but I may have misheard that bit.

lannister · 10/05/2020 19:28

I also heard swimming in the ponds Grin

Funkycats · 10/05/2020 19:29

@ragged nothing much, unless you have primary aged kids.

Puddlesplasher · 10/05/2020 19:29

I thought it was a good, clear overview and we'll get more detail tomorrow.

ZiggeryZaggy · 10/05/2020 19:30

Thank you @lannister - I wasn’t imagining it 😂 Did you hear the bit about meeting up with people too?

WhiteChocTwix · 10/05/2020 19:31

@TurtleTortoise virtual hug
I feel exactly the same. So sad and disappointed right now. My parents and brother are not coping with isolation. How can Bojo not address this??? Bugger me I need another Wine

BruceAndNosh · 10/05/2020 19:31

Lot of reading between the lines /pure guesswork going on

Easilyanxious · 10/05/2020 19:33

@ZiggeryZaggy what side were you watching as I didn't hear any of that ?

Focusanddetermination · 10/05/2020 19:34

Biggest load of vague waffle I've heard in a long time.

Conflicting stuff like definitely go back to work if you're in manufacturing / construction but don't use public transport.. So what are you supposed to do if you don't have a car and transport services are thin on the ground and now crammed full of others who don't have a car?

As for schools, I can't see the unions or parents accepting reception and year 1 back in 3 weeks time. How the hell do you socially distance 5 and 6 year olds? Or stop them bringing cv home?

Namechangervaver · 10/05/2020 19:37

That newsreader, who was reading from a clipboard afterwards, said we can meet up with people as long as we social distance. She was also talking about going fishing, to the beach. I thought she also said “allowed to go in ponds” but I may have misheard that bit.

Yeah, she said we can go golfing and swimming, but I didn't hear Boris say that. She added that herself 😂

thetoddleratemyhomework · 10/05/2020 19:39

On the family front, I don't think that the government can really give people clear guidance right now. I actually think this is fair enough.

The government could say pick ONE other household to socialise with. Lots of people would pick more than one - both sets of parents for example if in a couple - and try to justify it to themselves as "just one more", or if defined as "close family" then close by whose standards? Blood only or friends you see more often than family?

Then you have the problem that even if people did pick one household, what we have is a developing epidemic in care homes and hospitals (the one in the community has peaked, but the numbers in healthcare institutions is growing and effectively those workers need to be isolating from those outside of their household as far as possible to avoid spread back to the community). It is pretty unpalatable to be saying to the people who are on the front line "everyone else can see some family, but as well as all the other sacrifices people are making, you can't".

Namechangervaver · 10/05/2020 19:39

It makes sense that they'd start with primary schools, so that people can go back to work.

The cut and thrust of it is furlough is ending from 1st June

mencken · 10/05/2020 19:39

clearly it was not ideal for the hard of listening...

NO definite dates. All are 'if all goes well', defined by various tests.

good to be able to go out for more than one walk. Sport only with members of your family, so unless you are the Radfords you aren't playing a full football team.

and don't blame the government or any human agency for continued social distancing. If everyone climbs all over each other we WILL get that uncontrollable peak. Cases are STEADY, not dropping.

BruceAndNosh · 10/05/2020 19:40

@ZiggeryZaggy was this regional programme?

Namechangervaver · 10/05/2020 19:41

Strange that we've had 12 hours notice to get back to work
Grin

lannister · 10/05/2020 19:45

@ZiggeryZaggy and @Easilyanxious yeah heard that too, couldn't stop imagining myself in a pond. It was on sky news not in BJ speech but the lady commenting for sky news after

katseyes7 · 10/05/2020 20:02

Unfortunately, it seems the ones who need to "be alert" aren't.
l had a lady at my checkout today who was not best pleased at being asked to "stand on the line" (social distancing) while l served the customer before her.
Who then allowed her very small child to run her hands all over the checkout, and then, while she was packing her shopping back into the trolley, allowed said child to LICK the handle of the trolley.
Not a word said.
lt takes a lot to surprise me these days, but that certainly did.

BBCONEANDTWO · 10/05/2020 20:06

I can't wait to get into a pond to swim - WTF ha ha

BruceAndNosh · 10/05/2020 20:06

So I wonder where Sky News were getting their info from.
I'm desperate to play golf!

Easilyanxious · 10/05/2020 20:08

@focusdetermination other countries have started with the younger ones though so guess that's why plus will be a lot less children in than normal and again only if numbers are going down
I think we could of had bit more clarity and hoping that tomorrow we will as in travelling for exercise how far , can I drive the 45 mins to the beach.? When you have newsreaders on saying extra stuff that doesn't exactly help either as it causes more confusion

Easilyanxious · 10/05/2020 20:09

Would imagine a lot of construction don't use public transport though as but hard carrying your tools in a bus

LittleFoxKit · 10/05/2020 20:11

It's worth remembering this is only for England though.
Both wales and (I think) Scotland have said lockdown will continue as before but you can exercise more (but not unlimited, you cant sit around in parks, and you cant drive for miles and miles and have to exercise close to home). Wales have also stated that as currently there is no plan to open schools on first of June, and they will open when it becomes safe.
