I know there will be a roadmap of milestones but...

What does everyone think will be eased first and do you think it will be live from tomorrow (Monday)?

I think more return to work most to carry on working from home where possible and maybe be allowed to visit family at 2 metre distance.

Why on earth is it a pre-recorded statement? Can't Boris "address the nation"? And if it's pre-recorded why not release it early (it would have been better before the weekend) instead of allowing confusion to spread unfettered.

The difference between Boris and Leo is astounding at this stage, and even Nicola Sturgeon and Mark Drakeford are at least showing some sort of authority.
Mark Drakeford

SodaSloth · 10/05/2020 14:32

Think the media have over egged the pudding big time. When Boris makes his announcement a lot of the media will pounce on him and say he's broken promises that the reality is he hasn't made any

Namechangervaver · 10/05/2020 14:34

Why on earth is it a pre-recorded statement?

Hehe, I called that earlier (see upthread) Grin
They've realised he's an awful public speaker and can't be trusted with live broadcasts. That's also why he's gone missing from the daily briefings.

daisymay133 · 10/05/2020 14:36

The significant change is the focus on returning to work so he will be saying that people who can work safely should go to work

He’s publishing the guidelines that employers need to put in place

So actually it will affect many as many employers will start setting up these new guidelines ready to reopen when they’ve done so

I know my boss is planning on having managers in next week to start the workplace changes highlighted tonight

daisymay133 · 10/05/2020 14:37

Such as putting out taped distancing, hand gels in entrances and cleaning equipment wtc

NewAccountForCorona · 10/05/2020 14:44

Oh, sorry Namechangervaver, missed that. I'm just flabberghasted. I mean, the whole point of Boris (if there every was one) was that he was a people's person, and everyone loved his hail-fellow-well-met personality. And now ... crickets. Or Trump-like pontificating.

imsooverthisdrama · 10/05/2020 14:48

Oh come on a lot of older people do go to garden centres, it's not ageism to say so .

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/05/2020 14:55

So actually it will affect many as many employers will start setting up these new guidelines ready to reopen when they’ve done so

I wonder how this will affect businesses like shops, whether employers will start to get staff in to plan for opening or whether they'll hold off as presumably a lot of staff are still furloughed and if they don't know when the go ahead will be to open it might prove difficult.

lazyarse123 · 10/05/2020 14:57

Why's he calling it a roadmap? It's either a fucking plan or a strategy. How can you "be alert" to something you can't see, hear, smell or feel. Just have a conversation in plain english like normal people. I'd like to watch it but if he starts waving his arms about and waffling I might have to break the tv.

CocoCorona · 10/05/2020 14:58

Oh come on a lot of older people do go to garden centres, it's not ageism to say so .

I’ve notice over the years as some MNetters have aged, it’s become a thing on here to note every time an old person is mentioned and twist it like it’s derogatory. It’s like a chip on their shoulder about becoming old. And you can bet which people it will be.

I don’t really give a shit if someone calls me old. When I get old, I’ll be old and do what many old people do. Just like all the things I do now that a lot of mums my age do coz I’m a mum. 🤷‍♀️🙄

daisymay133 · 10/05/2020 14:59

Not sure about shops tho with no stay at home emphasis perhaps shops will be allowed open so long as they can follows the guidelines? It certainly seems business have had heads up with some saying they’ll open from next week

Certainly all other jobs like offices, banks etc will all be encouraged to start putting in screens, taping, cleaning procedures, Rita’s to allow staggering of staff times etc with aim to opening from next week or two. In my role theyre expecting, from tomorrow, to get managers in to do the set up and organise procedures before us staff go in once it’s all in place

With no advice to stay at home, employers who can in any way open safely will and I expect they’ll be a big difference in what we consider safe to the minimal requirement so set by governments

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2020 15:00

I will not be able to take Johnson serious tonight. That new slogan is seriously awful and reminiscent of a bad mid 80s cartoon...

BORIS JOHNSON IS BANANAMAN.

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/05/2020 15:02

It certainly seems business have had heads up with some saying they’ll open from next week

I think a lot of the ones reopening have been ones that didn't need to close in the first place, at least that's the case locally here.

daisymay133 · 10/05/2020 15:04

No I’m thinking more ikea, certain shops locally, weatherspoons, cafes with beer gardens wtc

Namechangervaver · 10/05/2020 15:06

@NewAccountForCorona they liked that during Brexit time, but in Corona world people have realised they need clear, concise information, not waffle and bluster. I saw something somebody posted on Twitter which was a link to an Australian newspaper article where they had printed word for word what Boris had replied to Keir in PMQs regarding the test and trace fiasco. It read like an incoherent ramble. Pretty unbelievable. I wish I could find it again.

Boris' colleagues have showed him up during the daily briefings by speaking concisely. The contrast when Boris came back was stark. I really think we're not going to see much of Boris for the foreseeable.

Laiste · 10/05/2020 15:27

I think it's going to be a mahoosive anti climax.

The combination of the media whipping up loads of ideas swirling round with all of our own family's individual hopes for what get free'd up is going to make the result a disappointment for the majority of us.

At 7pm I imagine it will be a bland statement with a vast quantity of waffling thanking and then a bit of desk banging and slogan type sentences about 'keeping on' and 'saving lives' and 'being strong' and 'looking to the future' and 'safeguarding our elderly' and 'being alert' and 'beating it' ( Hmm ) and telling us he desperately wants to lift the lockdown and is 'keeping an eye on everything'.

And at the end we all go: Confused So ........ right. Tomorrow is different than today because ....?

KonTikki · 10/05/2020 15:27

Mathew Parris in an article in the Times yesterday quoted Boris's speech at PMQ's this week.
It really was a disjointed rambling mess, particularly when shown in contrast to Starmer.

Sandybval · 10/05/2020 15:30

The main push I reckon will be for businesses that didn't actually have to close and have done and taken advantage of furlough will be encouraged to reopen and restart.

Why a Sunday night at 7pm? It’s the last thing I want to see on a Sunday night tbh and we’re still usually eating or clearing up dinner at that time anyway. Surely could have just scheduled for Monday instead.
Will it be like when the lockdown was announced, with all the main channels broadcasting it?

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2020 16:00

Why a Sunday night at 7pm?

Prime Time on a day when most people likely to be in and there is fuck all else on tv to watch.

Its so he gets his audience figures and isn't embarassingly overshadowed by 'Great British Pets Do Tricks' on ITV.

blissful201 · 10/05/2020 16:02

Can't see why we are all treated like children, told to sit and wait to 7pm Sunday to be told what to do??? Which country does this to its citizens?? I lost hope with this government.

Kitchendoctor · 10/05/2020 16:05

Prime time is more like 7.30/8.00/8.30

The80sweregreat · 10/05/2020 16:05

I think it'll be a 'roadmap ' that will take us down a cul de sac' myself but I've been told to not be negative!
Have to see what he has to say.!

Namechangervaver · 10/05/2020 16:06

His pre-recorded message is already out of date now because of all the pre-released info we've been given. Everybody is speculating and more questions have been thrown up.

Who reckons he's had to hastily re-record bits?
