I know there will be a roadmap of milestones but...

What does everyone think will be eased first and do you think it will be live from tomorrow (Monday)?

I think more return to work most to carry on working from home where possible and maybe be allowed to visit family at 2 metre distance.

It's pretty recorded anyway.

OnTheMoors · 10/05/2020 13:00

If school doesn't open I'm going to be falling down a dark hole that I'm currently balanced on the edge of

AtTheWinchester · 10/05/2020 13:02

I'm just hoping he'll let us see family.
I'm desperate for my newborn to meet my mum.

Couldn't give a shit about anything else really.

Bumpandus · 10/05/2020 13:05

When it was first announced about his statement tonight I was expecting a bit of a statement then further information of the roadmap to be online. Are we not getting that? Or do we not know?

I was all geared up to be finding out when the DCs may possible go back to school (even if that's Sept/Oct), when I can possibly arrange to visit my family (June/July/August), my holidays are definitely cancelled (currently still going ahead) etc.

Now I'm worried all I'll get is garden centres (somewhere I never visit) are going to be open and I can go running twice a day now (not that I ever have before COVID).

Its all a bit of a let down TBH. Nothing new.

Hugglespuffed · 10/05/2020 13:16

I agree we need a road map. That is what I think (and hope) is coming tonight.
But whether or not you go to garden centres doesn't really matter... nothing should really change this week.

PenfoldsFive · 10/05/2020 13:19

I bloody love a garden centre.

imsooverthisdrama · 10/05/2020 13:19

I know I mean how exciting garden centres are open and you can exercise more than once . I mean excuse me while I get giddy Hmm

Every garden centre round here is open anywayHmm they all sell fruit/veg as well so have been open all the way through!

Think tonight’s speech is going to be one of those where everyone can interpret it differently like the last one...which will still cause people to argue what you can and can’t do....expect lots of threads tomorrow on thisGrin

RunningNinja79 · 10/05/2020 13:31

Thanks @Noeuf

On Monday, the government will publish a 50-page document outlining the full plan to cautiously restart the economy to MPs

Does that mean we wont get to see it?

Apolloanddaphne · 10/05/2020 13:32

What a bloody ageist thread. Why will it just be the elderly going to garden centres? I am not elderly and would like to go and get some plants for my garden when the garden centres re-open.

I am sure they will be asked to organise things in the same way that supermarkets have done with distanced queueing get in and possibly follow a route round.

Things have to start reopening eventually and garden centres seem a good place to start.

Anniesnotmydaddy · 10/05/2020 13:38

The ageism on this thread is disgraceful. I know lots of older people who couldn't care less about garden centres.

AnnieP1 · 10/05/2020 13:41

To my knowledge there has never been a limit on how long you can exercise for, or a restriction of once a day. Not in the government guidelines published on March 26th or the guidelines for police published a few weeks ago.

Hugglespuffed · 10/05/2020 13:44

I love a garden centre too (in my 20s!)

The80sweregreat · 10/05/2020 13:54

My friend works in one and her employer doesn't appear to be giving a stuff about their employees! They opened last week as they sell animal food and done very little to protect the staff apparently.
She said that it's a mix of people that shop there but many do tend to be older who can afford to pay a bit extra for the plants etc rather than go to the supermarkets for them as they like to go out and have a cup of tea and cake as well. It's not ageist to say that older people have more time to browse , so tend to go to independent places but the younger people might go at weekends.
The centre have a day put aside for the over 70s to shop so they can see it's a money spinner but not necessarily being ageist etc.
I know lots of younger people who love their gardens as well.

ilovesooty · 10/05/2020 13:58

It's ageist to make reference to older people congregating and looking confused at the lack of cafés.

SouthWestmom · 10/05/2020 14:01

I've just looked at several reports on trends and demographics and a quick skim showed the assumptions on age are correct. Over 45s, retired people, under 30s less likely to have a garden, traditional market is the retired, younger people use diy and supermarkets for their garden supplies.

It's not ageist to be surprised that 1. Older people are more likely to be affected badly and 2. They are more likely than younger people to use garden centres and so opening them above other types of shop is weird. But then I was shocked they announced fertility clinics opening with fanfare above any other nhs clinics.

SouthWestmom · 10/05/2020 14:02

It's ageist to make reference to older people congregating and looking confused at the lack of cafés.

Obviously not in my assumptions. And not something I'd agree with.

CocoCorona · 10/05/2020 14:06

Oh wow. So we can’t say that older people are more likely to go to garden centres? I know loads of old people who go to garden centres, and less “younger” people who do. Like I’d expect more younger people in nightclubs and less older people there.

Is it ageist to say younger people go to college and nightclubs or is it only against OLDER people?

BruceAndNosh · 10/05/2020 14:09

Actually if people go to a garden centre once, it will keep them at home home doing gardening with all the stuff they've bought

HatRack · 10/05/2020 14:14

Boomer Remover is going to live up to it's name at this rate.

SquishySquirmy · 10/05/2020 14:25

I love a good trip to the garden centre. I can also see the reasons why social distancing etc is easier than in other types of shop. But it's as interesting demonstration of priorities....

Let's improve quality of lockdown life for people with gardens, disposable income, and spare time.... Our lockdown experience is surely the most difficult.... Hmm
I am sure it is nothing to do with keeping demographics most likely to vote conservative happy

I hope that if it is safe to open up garden centres, then access to other spaces is opened up.
Also clear statements that stop the vilification of families and young children exercising entirely within the guidelines.
It is easier to socially distance in a park or a beach than a garden centre. Even an open air playground is no higher risk than queuing at a till/fondling bedding plants.
If it is safe for restrictions to be eased then I would like to see relaxations targeted to benefit those without private outdoor space.
