Judging by Nicola Sturgeons remarks today Scotland will remain In lockdown as it is now till the end of May while England will start easing up

Given we have so many less deaths in Scotland does anyone else feel Nicola is just making an independence point now

The problem is that the UK is going through this at a different rate - London and the South East are clearly through the peak, Midlands/Wales/Yorkshire are getting there, the North West and Scotland arent quite there yet.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/slides-and-datasets-to-accompany-coronavirus-press-conference-6-may-2020

So really we shouldnt be going for a 4 country solution (or even actually a one country solution) Germany/Italy/France have all done things regionally

We should be too based on data rather than politics

neveradullmoment99 · 06/05/2020 23:42

She is doing a fantastic job. I totally agree with her.
The numpties in Westminster are the pits and deserve no trust.
I believe they are now being driven by business as opposed to the health of others. Lambs to the slaughter! Even most of Europe are critising the West Minster government.
So so glad I don't live in England and feel very sorry for the people that are.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 23:43

to hell with the economy

I thought Nicola wanted to continue the lockdown until it was safe to ease it?

There's no healthy or even functioning economy when the staff are all off sick at the same time for weeks on end. Or dead.

It shouldn't take too long to be ready for a safer easing of lockdown. Other countries (some poorer than us) have managed it.

Had the government sorted things when lockdown began we'd likely be ready by now.

All we need is to finally get PPE for frontline staff (so they don't keep dying), drugs, accurate testing, masks for the public, and a reduced infection rate.

Oh and start treating patients. Early, when chances of survival are much more likely.

Sadie789 · 06/05/2020 23:43

@yester really? Boris sought out someone with corona (using his government issue X-ray corona glasses) and rubbed himself up against them did he? Please behave.

Kortnee · 06/05/2020 23:43

@KingJarvis

She sent them to die and if Boris had done that, this place would’ve imploded

This is happening in England as well.

avroroad · 06/05/2020 23:45

@Sadie789

Boris sought out someone with corona (using his government issue X-ray corona glasses) and rubbed himself up against them did he? Please behave.

Not quite. But he did quite deliberately shake hands with Coronavirus patients.

slashlover · 06/05/2020 23:46

@Sadie789

I think @yester was being a tad sarcastic.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 23:46

@neveradullmoment99 it's not just other European countries looking at the UK government in shock. It's worldwide!

Both our number of deaths and our death rate are one of the highest in the whole world.

avroroad · 06/05/2020 23:46

I don't want to, it I'm definitely pleased with how NS is handling this.

Sadie789 · 06/05/2020 23:47

The implication of the sarcasm was that he did it deliberately to put his girlfriend and ex wife in danger. Pathetic even to insinuate.

Sadie789 · 06/05/2020 23:48

@ToffeeYoghurt they aren’t.

There is no reliable way of comparing data by country.

Iamamoleinahole · 06/05/2020 23:51

Easing lockdown gives us respite before the flu season starts in autumn. The second wave is usually worse.

She is making a political point for her own political gain.

Timefor45 · 06/05/2020 23:51

Our death rate is relative to our high population on a small island (which has continued to let in daily international and European flights, Scotland included!) Yes, they are alarming figures but we have an older population too, it’s not as straight forward as saying our death rate is the highest in the world.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/05/2020 23:51

Totally @ToffeeYoghurt. Yes world wide!
-and yet they are thinking about easing things wtf!! English people are now believing its for the best!!!

Nicola has handled this situation brilliantly. Putting the people first and has been transparent in her handling of it. Everything published online. The opportunity to have your say and suggest. I really don't know what more she could be doing for the people in Scotland.
She should be leading the UK. She would be doing a damn site better than Johnson and his idiots.

Yester · 06/05/2020 23:52

@Sadie789 I heard he licked them just to make sure. He really is like Churchill. So brave.
Why anyone wouldn't follow his lead is beyond me. Surgeon is obviously a bit thick...well she isn't English, male or an Etonian so she is at a disadvantage.

Lala241280 · 06/05/2020 23:54

I believe she is doing a great job and generally cares for the Scottish people

But what happens when furlough ends it’s hard enough being on 80% wages but if it’s true and we have to go down to 60% , what then . People simply can’t afford to stay at home people need to earn money and I do t think the Scottish government will top it back up

The focus should now be on testing and moving forward safely in all aspects of life

How can we increase the daily testing
What can our work places be doing to get us back to work in a safe environment
What can we do for schools to get our kids back to learning - how are they ever going to catch up

VimtoCordial · 06/05/2020 23:54

If there's to be a one nation relaxing of measures to corona then it needs to move at the pace of the part of that nation that is furthest behind (Scotland?) rather than the one furthest ahead (London?).

Hadenoughfornow · 06/05/2020 23:56

I don't like Nicola that much.

She is not a Boris though........and that says it all.

I don't think Lockdown will last longer than England.

I do think schools will not go back until August but that is because term finishes in June.

One of the things that annoys me about Stirgeon is that she mentions Independence always even when inappropriate. I do not think that is her aim at the moment.

She's went up in my estimation and I listen to her to hear what we really need to know.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 23:56

People also need to bear in mind being apparently through peak and being safe are very different things.

Hundreds are still dying daily in London and the SE. More in one day than some countries have had in total.

And the minute lockdown is lifted (if it happens too soon) it will be places like London with its high density cramped housing and crowded public transport that will again see the most deaths.

Everywhere will be affected by premature end to lockdown but anyone who thinks London is out of the woods is living in a dream world. The government certainly isn't looking out for Londoners.

All 'through peak' means is we might be seeing say 400 dead every day instead of 800.

The level of infection in London and the SE and elsewhere across the UK is still far too high for a safe easing of lockdown. Particularly so given we still don't have enough PPE for frontline staff.

underneaththeash · 06/05/2020 23:56

I don't think it will, i just think school dates are less compatable.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/05/2020 23:58

@VimtoCordial
Westminster don't give a toss about Scotland. They have form.
Was it not just recently Michael Gove suggested to lift the lock down in Scotlands HIghlands to do the antibody testing!!!!

BobbyMo · 06/05/2020 23:59

Easing up should wait until test, track and trace is available... you know, like in Germany (and like the WHO were saying in February).

And that should be the case across the UK.

The PM seems to be playing more games (and playing to the newspapers) much more than the FM.

The economy, education & mental health are so important, but if the test, track and trace is inadequate, lockdown will happen again and happen for longer. The economy and education will take a greater hit over a longer period of time.

Hadenoughfornow · 06/05/2020 23:59

toffee London is not Scotlands concern. The subway (clockwork orange) is not comparable to the Tube.

neveradullmoment99 · 07/05/2020 00:01

Boris and Westminster are now driven by business.
The tone has now changed. They want to get the economy started at all costs. Not at their cost though.

Hadenoughfornow · 07/05/2020 00:01

never and why would that have been a bad thing?

Poll tax was. But lifting lockdown in an area not impacted, and with very low population density- doesn't seem a bad thing.
