I dont see how they could say it wouldnt get into care homes
The original plan was no lockdown so 100% it would have gotten into care homes as 80% of population would have it at once.
Re the chance otherwise of it getting in again 100% if staff going in didnt have masks even in a lockdown scenario.
But once they knew there were positive elderly at hospital (which they knew or knew would happen otherwise why include plan to return them) they should have planned alternative accommodation.
The law is based on reasonableness and they couldnt reasonably claim they thought staff (without ppe) would be able to contain it with an elderly person within a care home -especially when they wouldnt let patients be teated on exit.

Keepdistance · 13/05/2020 14:45

If this were an employee they would be removed from post.

  • Whoever didnt stop the italy returners going back to work/school
  • whoever decided cheltenham/football/concerts etc
  • whoever decided lack of test and trace
  • person not buying ppe/ventilators and joining. Eu scheme.
NettleTea · 13/05/2020 18:00

in addition to the madness associated with testing in the care home my MIL is in (tests given but couriers refusing to confirm when they will come / not turning up for 3 days / care home staff having to buy their own PPE apart from masks) Ive now found that doctors are refusing to come into the home at all.
My MIL has a high temp, thet are treating it as being covid, because what else can they do.
The tests they received will be counted as part of the daily tests, but as they arent being collected nobody is going to be counted as testing positive, and if she dies she wont be in the official figures.

I told her adult social care worker, who was horrified. He couldnt believe the PPE situation because its one of the most expensive homes in the area.

I was glad so see today the ONS figures acknowledged properly today in the daily briefing and the graphs. Hopefully this will continue or they they align their figures. I have been hoping for more transparency on this.

Just posted a link in that local group

Wonder if they will still think "mistakes are natural" and that Boris is doing his best.

@NettleTea that's so awful, Thanks

"its not factual just more scaremongering" Apparently,

middleager · 13/05/2020 23:41

Helena There's one at a local big park on Saturday. Good job I saw it as we go there every Saturday because it is so breathtakingly scenic and it feels like a 'holiday' just going there amid this claustrophobia.

Will have to avoid this week as it will be heaving.

HeIenaDove · 13/05/2020 23:58

Ive said before the infrastructure isnt there to support a lockdown.

Charities report rise in older people struggling for food in lockdown
People too scared to go out and lacking usual support networks during coronavirus crisis

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of older people malnourished or at risk of malnutrition since the coronavirus crisis began, according to Age UK and the Malnutrition Task Force.

Age UK delivers almost 19,000 food packages a week to older people and has reported a rise in numbers without food or the support to plan, to cook and eat by themselves.

“We know there are older people living on their own in the community who are running out of food and struggling to replenish their supplies because they are too frightened to go out, confused by the guidance or because their usual support networks have collapsed as a result of a pandemic,” said Caroline Abrahams, the charity director of Age UK.

These people are not on anyone’s list,” she added. “Typically they are not online. However, the pandemic has pulled the rug out from under them, so that their usual strategies for getting by are no longer working

The charity said that since the pandemic began there had been an unprecedented number of inquiries to its advice line, peaking at almost double the usual rate of calls

Age UK and the Malnutrition Task Force have reported an increase in contacts about older people being discharged from hospital with no food or support in place, and people struggling to access social care support or manage without the informal help usually available from family and friends.

The charities are also hearing of increased stress and anxiety among people with ongoing health and care needs, causing them to reduce their intake of food and drink.

Abrahams said she had a conversation recently with an elderly man called Nigel. “He has no food in his house but he is scared to leave it because of coronavirus,” she said. “Nigel isn’t online. He was recently discharged from hospital but no longer gets any support at home. Nigel was told that food parcels would be delivered but has only received one some time ago. He is now out of food and has no family or friends who can help him.”

Another Age UK frontline service reported the case of 79-year-old Betty, who relies on her friend to top up her gas meter. “She doesn’t have funds to do it herself and is unable to go out. She has emphysema but is just using a blanket to keep warm,” said Abrahams.

She hasn’t got any food, only some bread and bacon that a neighbour gave her. She is worried and lonely, with no support. She is unable to contact her GP because she does not have much phone credit or enough money to top it up,” she said.

Dianne Jeffrey, the chair of the Malnutrition Task Force, said: We are extremely worried that the number of those suffering malnutrition is rising. Many of these people will eventually be admitted to hospital

A government spokesperson said: “Vulnerable individuals can refer themselves to the NHS Volunteer Responders programme by calling 0808 196 3646 to be linked with a volunteer who can shop for them.

“There are also commercial food delivery options available, including food boxes and prepared meals. A list of these has been shared with local authorities and charities, including Age UK. Anyone in urgent need of support should contact their local authority, most of which have dedicated Covid-19 helplines.”

RedToothBrush · 14/05/2020 00:09

Antibodies.

Times and telegraph reporting antibody test has been approved. That's huge step forward if that's the case.

On the flip to that the story about covid-19 in children. Many tested negative for Covid-19 but antibodies were found in their blood suggesting they got ill after fighting off the virus in response to the anti bodies in their blood...

... Would this be a problem in terms of a vaccine for children?

It's absolutely awful Helena. I said from the start how lacking the support was for elderly and disabled.
The article's headlines is wrong though. As is clear from their content it's not the lockdown that's doing this. It's the pandemic. And our government's mishandling of it.

Vulnerable individuals can refer themselves to the NHS Volunteer Responders programme by calling 0808 196 3646 to be linked with a volunteer who can shop for them.
This should be widely advertised so that those that need it are aware. That means not just online. It needs to be on TV, radio, mailshots. Was it included in Boris's letter? (I never bothered reading it).

I'm so sorry to hear how things are with your MIL @NettleTea

These people's lives are valuable. The mark of a civilised society is how we treat the most vulnerable.

The markets have fallen due to second wave fears. We face a slower economic recovery now. If only we'd taken proper measures and sooner.

ToffeeYoghurt · 14/05/2020 00:29

RTB If that turns out to be the case for children, all the more reason to focus on treatments as much as a vaccine.

Vaccines can work differently to antibodies produced following an actual illness? I could be completely wrong. Hopefully someone who knows better can come along and clarify.

HeIenaDove · 14/05/2020 00:32

"This should be widely advertised so that those that need it are aware. That means not just online. It needs to be on TV, radio, mailshots. Was it included in Boris's letter? (I never bothered reading it)"

Exactly Most of the volunteer groups ive seen are on fb. The oldest pensioners in the UK were never going to see it if they are completely on their own.

I dont remember it being on the letter

They sent the bloody Brexit correspondence on paper through the post readily enough!!

HeIenaDove · 14/05/2020 00:38

@NettleTea Appalling situation Thanks

HeIenaDove · 14/05/2020 00:41

If you arent online you arent privy to half of whats going on. We have been having major outages but it looks like it may have been fixed.

ToffeeYoghurt · 14/05/2020 00:46

They really should send out another mailshot. At least do something relatively cheap and easy for the vulnerable.

I think I'll contact my local group tomorrow and see what they think about local DIY mailshots with contact info for help. I have some spare printer ink and paper and perhaps others will too.

NettleTea · 14/05/2020 08:26

just swearing at Radio 4.
The absolute bullshit
yes care homes have got tests, but if nobody comes and collects them, then what use are they, apart from to add to the figures of daily tests

And as for 'containing it' back in Feb/March
My mother was seriously ill - absolutely 100% has had it, laid out for 5 weeks, fatigued, fever, cough, headache, unable to breathe, actually thought she was dying one day and unable to get tested because at that time 111 was ONLY referring people from wuhan, northern italy and tenerife. "we have no indication that mainland Spain is a problem"

utter fucking incompetance

wintertravel1980 · 14/05/2020 11:35

Have just seen this:

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/ijcp.13528

It is a peer reviewed article (which is extremely rare for C19 related publications) that suggests up to 29% of the UK population might have had COVID.

The number is higher than what gets picked up through antibody testing since some people appear to fight C19 with T-cells without developing antibodies.

HeIenaDove · 14/05/2020 19:04

Channel 4 news doing a huge segment on care workers. And how they are under paid , under valued, classed as low skilled and why they cant socially distance due to the appalling places some of them live in.

HeIenaDove · 14/05/2020 19:14

A care worker interviewed lives in one room with her son and they share bathroom and kitchen facilities with ten other families.

A care worker was ill with Covid for 28 days and was brought a hot meal every day by Hare Krishna She has to walk an hour to get to work and same to get home because she cant afford public transport.

HeIenaDove · 14/05/2020 19:30

As a species we really do learn nothing from history.

thebiomedicalscientist.net/science/big-story-tales-plague

In 1665, the mortality rates in the poorer parishes and suburbs to the south and north-east of the city were double those in the centre. This may be explained in part by the withdrawal of the rich to the countryside at the beginning of epidemics, but must largely be due to the nature of the buildings inhabited by different social groups, for well-maintained houses with tiled roofs would harbour far fewer rats than the ramshackle huts of the poor. This was illustrated during the outbreak, when most of the city’s aldermen and suburban justices stayed at their posts - yet none died as they lived in better houses. The final aspect is that plague is essentially a disease of the household, a characteristic again derived from rodent infestation of the family home. Once the rats of a particular house were infected, it was likely that most, if not all, of its human inhabitants would develop the disease, whether young or old, male or female

ToffeeYoghurt · 14/05/2020 19:42

Helena
Will this be a repeat of a few years ago. When MPs froze the wages of the lower paid (and kept benefits below subsistence level for many). Yet voted themselves a large pay rise.

Why not do it the other way round this time? Follow suit of NZ. Like everything else about their handling of the pandemic, they led the way in having their politicians take a 20% pay cut to help fund the necessary measures required to tackle it.
