Resigns after breaking the lockdown?

If we didn’t do lockdown what should we have done?

When asked politely to do social distancing most people ignored it, so lockdown surely became necessary. It would look like in Sweden that, although they are not in lockdown, they are mainly maintaining a form of social distancing. And their population is spread out and probably healthier than ours.

Tracking and testing is the next stage, how many threads are on here with people saying they refuse to have the app.

Closing the borders seems to have worked well in NZ, but how many people on here in late February/early March were determined to go on holiday and weren’t going to be told what to do.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/05/2020 01:26

"Him ignoring his own advice doesn't invalidate it.
Well it does actually"

So an obese HCP can't advise someone else to lose weight ?
Their advice is invalidated because they are obese ?

A doctor who smokes or drinks heavily means it's OK for a patient to ignore the advice and to do likewise ?

BigChocFrenzy · 06/05/2020 01:28

Boris isn't going to change his mind about lockdown just because one of his advisers is led by his dick

Otherwise he'd probably be changing government policy every week !

Namenic · 06/05/2020 01:30

Ps - Singapore have locked down with closure of schools for about a month.

SudokuBook · 06/05/2020 01:38

A doctor who smokes or drinks heavily means it's OK for a patient to ignore the advice and to do likewise ?

Who takes advice from someone who doesn’t bother to follow it themselves? “Do as I say not as I do”? Nah.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 01:39

If a policeman or judge get caught drink driving, do you think it's ok or safe to drink drive Sudoku?

somm · 06/05/2020 01:43

'Well Dom is already on SAGE so I guess that makes him a scientist' > peapod29. Peapod you're worrying me now. I already read Cummings was sitting in on these meetings, and I don't want to believe conspiriacy theories; but it's late at night and I have anxiety, and I'm thinking is Cummings using this as an exercise to see how you can lock down a country? I'm willing to accept that my view is skewed by the fact that I can't stand Dominic Cummings.

SudokuBook · 06/05/2020 01:49

Drink driving is against the long established law of the land. Ferguson has dreamt up this modelling which has formed the basis of the government response and can’t even be bothered to follow the guidance this led to. Thousands of dead, millions of lives ruined on the basis of a model which now I don’t trust one iota. I hope this ruins him.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 01:55

He hasn't dreamt anything up. The facts speak for themselves. It's also tbh very basic common sense. A highly contagious deadly virus spreading unchecked. It's not hard to work out what happens.

We have at least 30,000 dead. That's with a lockdown.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 01:58

Still, it seems like the government will end lockdown soon (whether they're also finally getting more PPE and some drug treatments I don't know).

We can all look forward to the second wave and it's inevitable consequence - the Heatwave Lockdown.

What fun. Lockdown in sweltering temperatures.

SudokuBook · 06/05/2020 01:58

He’s lost all credibility as far as I am concerned. Drink driving laws don’t place 65 m under effective house arrest and trash the economy for generations to come. Given his record, I won’t be surprised if history doesn’t prove Ferguson to have got it spectacularly wrong, again.

SudokuBook · 06/05/2020 02:01

I want the lockdown to continue but it’s not hard to wonder why we are bothering with this sacrifice and having our economy and our children’s education trashed when Ferguson clearly doesn’t give 2 fucks.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 02:09

I understand where you're coming from. He's clearly not setting a good example!

I don't want lockdown to continue. I want it to safely ease. The government needs to get on with getting us (as soon as possible) accurate testing, PPE, masks for the public, treatments. Like other countries have done.

Mikki2019 · 06/05/2020 07:22

@ToffeeYoghurt ‘Heatwave Lockdown’

Hahahaha - do you live in the UK? Heatwave ??

Derbygerbil · 06/05/2020 07:42

@LilacTree1

For the record, I’d have gone for the Swedish approach. Which Ferguson sails should have meant 40,000 deaths there by 1st May.

Sweden may not have had lockdown, but its citizens have socially distanced significantly at great cost to their economy. There’s this misconception that Sweden is somehow carrying on as normal - it’s not. His modelling was wrong on Sweden, but it also indicated that 20,000 deaths was a reasonable expectation for UK deaths following lockdown - clearly an underestimate - so his errors work both ways.

jasjas1973 · 06/05/2020 07:59

We are not the highest death rate in Europe

3rd highest as of 5th May, Belgium counts any death where CV is suspected, so has a very hi reported rate,no other country does this in Europe.
UK is also on a higher trajectory and 2 or 3 weeks behind Italy/Spain.

Ferguson is either a great scientific mind or he isn't, his personal life should have no bearing on his resignation, he isn't responsible for any policy, that's what politicians are there to do.

Considering what our own PM has done (btw where is he?) ferguson had no need to step down over this.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 08:15

We have far more deaths than Belgium. They have had about 6,000 compared to our 32,000+. Yes their population is smaller and yes their actual death rate is higher than ours. But to have one of the highest death rates in the world AND one of the highest numbers dead is pretty shameful. Particularly as with earlier treatment many of those deaths might have been avoidable.

Sweden has a much more spaced out population. 50% live in single person households. Much easier to socially distance.

As for Ferguson. We don't really need an expert to tell us about basic common sense do we? The concept of contagion and how to reduce the spread of an incredibly infectious disease is very simple.

IrenetheQuaint · 06/05/2020 08:19

"Ferguson has dreamt up this modelling which has formed the basis of the government response and can’t even be bothered to follow the guidance this led to."

The problem isn't even so much that he hasn't followed the guidance - it is that he (or rather his lover, as she travelled to shag him) has broken the law - a law that Ferguson has publicly supported and encouraged everyone else to comply with. Absolutely right for him to resign his position on SAGE.

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 08:23

I do Mikki

I presume you don't or were abroad last year. We had some very hot days during the summer including one where it was 38°.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 06/05/2020 08:23

Professor Lockdown doesn't lock down.

Been through all nine pages. No one else has said it, so I will:

Professor Lockdown couldn't keep his cock down.

@jasjas1973
'Done nothing Johnson hasn't already done (Go shake Cv patients hands everyone and serial cheat) so promote Ferguson. Apparently not a resigning matter in today's world'

I agee, the behaviour of our PM has been far worse than that of Ferguson.

Weetam68 · 06/05/2020 08:34

It is about time the police force in this country got their house in order and began doing the job we all pay them for.

Instead of conniving and conspiring with these utter criminals holding the entire planet hostage.

It is an utter disgrace and not one of us should be accepting it.

Mikki2019 · 06/05/2020 08:39

@MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing love it !
