Is anyone else having a problem finding bread products in supermarkets? For the past three weeks in the two supermarkets closest to me there has been no wholemeal/brown/with seeds sliced bread, no pitta bread, no English muffins...

CroissantsAtDawn · 26/05/2020 19:50

Ive been having bread problems throughout lockdown.

And still now

DH makes all our bread, but DD asked for hotdogs with the soft white buns this week so I ventured into the pain de mie section yesterday and it was completely empty!

Frenchfancy · 26/05/2020 21:19

I went to the supermarket today and the bread Isles were fully stocked. So we're the flour shelves.

KatharinaRosalie · 26/05/2020 21:36

Yes less than half of DS's class is back. I know some parents were planning to send the DC, but then all the newspapers started publishing how horrible and traumatising the schools will be, so they changed their mind. School seems fine, DS is a very sensitive child and he's happy to be back. And honestly I'm not even complaining, if more children went back, he would be able to go part time only.

LongPause that's interesting, maybe I will give it a try.

Bandol · 26/05/2020 22:04

Bread and flour are fairly normal in my supermarket (countryside but close to a big city).

DD is in GS and there are 3 of them in her group! It’s only GS in the maternelle at the moment, but I’m guessing around half of the year group are going.

DS is in Ce2 and there are 5 in his class going to school - just under half the year group in his class (combined with CM1 who are attending different mornings).

Both of mine are going to school twice a week for 2 hours each time. Both are very happy to go to school at the moment. However, only 2 hours and no canteen isn’t exactly a tough day at school.

Watchagotcha · 27/05/2020 06:42

Next big announcement is Thursday apm btw: Edouard Philippe on phase 2 of the deconfinement I think.

CroissantsAtDawn · 27/05/2020 07:18

Interesting how few children are back. I was slightly concerned about them finding it disconcerting but they are really really happy there.

GS maitresse sent a lovely video of the children in class saying hello to all the others - they're all well spaced out and were incredibly cheerful. After all, they've just spent 10 weeks in an even odder situation.

Bread is a permanent "worry" as is chicken. Can't get it for a decent price anywhere! Chicken breasts are all above 17 euros the kilo whereas before we'd buy for 12-14...

No shortages here - must be because all the Swiss can't come across for shopping.

Plane ticket prices have dropped (not Easyjet during holidays, mind), some routes I regularly fly with Lufthansa or KLM are less than half the price. Of course the trouble is that you don't know when you are able to go - the July trip to UK will not happen if they don't lift the quarantine.

NoraLuka · 27/05/2020 09:15

We had less bread than usual for a while but there was always some, and I think it depended on what time you went shopping.

Our collège has sent a message saying that they will decide what to do about 4ème and 3ème after the announcement on 2nd June - I think maybe they meant the announcement on Thursday about the 2nd June. Then there will be a consultation about what to do next. I don’t know who they will be consulting but it doesn’t look good for 3ème and 4ème being back in next Tuesday !

Watchagotcha · 27/05/2020 12:04

@CroissantsAtDawn

I suspect it’s nice for the ones that have gone back because there are so few of them. Double, or triple, the number of kids and none of the teachers will have time for much other than crowd control and hand wash monitoring!

SheWranglesRugRats · 27/05/2020 12:49

Was just trying to think, was anyone of note caught breaking le confinement in France? Not that I can think of.

SheWranglesRugRats · 27/05/2020 12:50

My CP clearly has something of a crush on his new teacher. It's very cute Smile

kersh33 · 27/05/2020 12:51

We've not even been looking in the bread aisle - but I know straight after lockdown they were empty. We have a boulangerie within walking distance so get all our bread from there which has been pretty reliable. Though some of the specialty breads are not available anymore which is a shame.

LongPauseNoReply · 27/05/2020 12:55

I just read that anyone with diplomatic status can skip the 14 day quarantine. DH has diplomatic status, as do we by proxy, it's on our ID cards. I don't know why diplomats are exempt, some magic diplomatic cure? Confused

AuldAlliance · 27/05/2020 13:52

I was idly wondering the same thing, SheWranglesRugRats. No one of note seems to have been caught, AFAIK.
Libé has been very outspoken on Cummings, I noted.

AuldAlliance · 27/05/2020 18:15

Email just in from the parents' association at DS1's lycée: what is planned for Sept is 1 week in school, 1 week remote learning.
As I expected. No info re boarding (he is a weekly boarder)...

Mistigri · 27/05/2020 21:31

Shortages are pretty much over here. Even sliced bread - which I buy for DS to make toast and which was unavailable for weeks - is now back in stock, along with 1kg bags of panzani pasta and liquid soap.

We haven't heard from DS's lycée. Hard to believe they'll be back at school next week.

DS has kind of moved on in his head anyway. He has a place on the course he wanted for next year (INSA in Toulouse), he has already sorted out accommodation and he is starting to work on some post-bac maths. He hasn't much enjoyed terminale so I am very happy for him. It's just a shame they probably won't have a normal start to their higher education.

NameChangedZzzzzz · 27/05/2020 21:53

@Mistigri congrats on your son !

Has he applied to the Enginsa group by any chance ? Grin

Mistigri · 27/05/2020 22:03

No - he considered it, but you can only apply to one "filière à thème" and he wants to do musique-études.

Mistigri · 27/05/2020 22:05

One of his classmates has applied to Enginsa though - she is on the waiting list unfortunately, I don't know what her chances are. INSA Toulouse has become ridiculously hard to get into.

NameChangedZzzzzz · 27/05/2020 22:09

Yes it has hasn’t it... People seem to be turning away from prépas. But it is a good Ecole !

Mistigri · 27/05/2020 22:20

I don't think it's that teenagers no longer want to do a prépa, so much that there is a shortage of options for ambitious students in the south west. The prépas are also very oversubscribed.

DS does a lot of music which isn't really compatible with a prépa.

I was gobsmacked by the number of candidates for Toulouse, it's now significantly harder to get into than Lyon, which is mad.

Frenchfancy · 28/05/2020 06:19

I wouldn't blame teenagers for not wanting to do prépa. It can be brutal.

Still no news from our college. Some of dds year group have been told they are back next week but not her.
