Time to get real people

Ok I think it's time to get a grip on reality!

Coronavirus is pretty nasty but it isn't apocalypse now time. Most of us are going to get it at some point and we will be just fine. So will our families and friends.
The UK cannot stay locked down for much longer without producing a national disaster that will reverberate for decades. So - you will be going back to work, your kids will be going back to school. Wash your hands well and enjoy your lives.
I'm just so sick of the posts prophesying carnage and really enjoying competitive isolation. For most people living like this is borderline harmful. For some it is already actively harmful.

We have to come out from under the bed. Wear a mask, wear gloves if you like but be prepared to live a normal if socially distanced life.

All epidemics burn themselves out eventually. We are much better placed to treat and protect the vulnerable then ever before. At some point soon we have to just get on with it.

What is a bigger fear than a fear of dying or losing loved ones? There isn't one for normal people

All of our loved ones will die at some point. Not everyone is scared of death. I love my family but I am under no illusions that they will be here forever.

Do I want them to die from Corona? No.

Equally though do I want to lose my job, my house, everything I've worked for? Do I want to let my child go hungry? Do I want to see the same happen to family and friends?

Do I want there to be no NHS because it's actually paid for by taxes which there will be none of if we stay in lockdown indefinitely.... No.

Balance.

DianaT1969 · 03/05/2020 16:53

First of all, Boris isn't the only leader who put a country in lockdown. If you look around the world, most have. With the exception of North Korea. Perhaps that's more your sort of country?
Secondly, you don't get to decide. People are currently in lockdown because that is the rule unless you can't work from home.
It's interesting that your OP exactly fits with the new narrative from the Daily Mail that started today. Last week we were all covidiots out sitting on the grass and taking long bike rides. Putting everyone at risk. Today (Sunday) we're all lazy dimwits for continuing to observe the lockdown and should have been back to work by now.
Well, hairdressers, cleaners, events, organisers, restaurant owners, baristas and lots of other professions would probably love to be back at work. OP - tell them to get a grip and get the hell out of their houses.
OP - tell us about your movements last week. Did you travel by public transport in London regularly, were you working in a care home or hospital? Do tell us.

Xiqu · 03/05/2020 16:53

Marvellous!
I no longer have a job. Pretty much the entire industry I worked in has already been decimated so as much as I should dust myself off, get a grip and get back to work I suspect my days will be filled job hunting and tweaking my CV.
I've already been job hunting and there's not much out there.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 03/05/2020 16:55

I agree, enough is enough, we need to try get back to some kind of normality before the economy is crippled. Small business owners are on the brink of losing everything, peoples mental health is in tatters and the repercussions of all the cancelled surgeries and interventions is going to cause chaos for the NHS.

We need to bite the bullet end lockdown and see how it pans out.

han01uk · 03/05/2020 16:56

I'm sure the family of the 28,000 people that have died just in the UK will be appreciative of your wise words.

confusedandtired99 · 03/05/2020 16:56

I’m sick of these threads personally. Multiple per day If you use the search function.

Thighmageddon · 03/05/2020 16:57

If anyone is listening to the daily briefing, to me it came across as we're not ending lockdown next Thursday I'm afraid. The wording was quite telling.

SmileEachDay · 03/05/2020 16:58

The death toll is grossly inflated anyway due to the way they record COVID death and does not justify the response
It’s not inflated. Have a look at the week on week deaths compared to average for this time of year.

Also, there's no proof that social isolation even works
This is bollocks. Social isolation would prevent contagion of most things. By reducing contact between carriers, contagion is reduced.

This situation had proved how stupid and naive the general population is

Why?

IScreamForIceCreams · 03/05/2020 16:59

There there, have a nice cuppa now

fronttoback · 03/05/2020 17:00

I agree with you
So do I. This virus is here to stay, but we can't carry on with the wailing and gnashing of teeth indefinitely. Civilisation and society as we know it would break down irrevocably.

CharDeeMacDennis · 03/05/2020 17:01

Quite right. Those pretend people are crap.

Sarahandco · 03/05/2020 17:05

"get a grip" new slogan coming to a podium near you soon!

Keepdistance · 03/05/2020 17:06

I hate this phrase but
ODFOD.
Just because you are young and healthy.
There are 17m in the vulnerable category.
And anyway you may not be as safe as you think you are.
It's just statistics and can kill anyone. There have been many under 40 in hospital. And just because only 10 under 20s habe died doesnt tell you how many in hospital.
So you would rather we were covidiots like BJ??!
We saw what happened to him. Hes 55 and a bit chubby. Nearly ended up on a ventilator apparently.
Doesn't that sound like loads of parents and workers.
You soubd likean idiot. If the death rate is say 1% in the uk which we cant kniw as no antibody testing that would be obvious maybe 1/100 people you know. And it's actually probably not the shielded people it will be the vulnerable groups

Bollss · 03/05/2020 17:06

For those who don't want lockdown to end... What do you think the solution is?

I think there has been widespread misunderstanding of why we are in lockdown in the first place.

bodgeitandscarper · 03/05/2020 17:07

Crack on then, personally I'll be following scientific advice so that if I do become ill I'll at least stand a chance of receiving good care. I'd quite like vulnerable relatives to be safe too. It is all about balance, you think the balance has swung too far, plenty will disagree with you.
Let the test, track and trace be properly in place, research further developed and possible vaccines researched and people will be happier coming out of lockdown. Patience is a virtue.

feetfreckles · 03/05/2020 17:11

How exactly do you propose to get back to normality?

Going back to how we were before leads to the virus escalating out of control

I guess you want normal not another lockdown?

So up to 1 in 5 of the workforce ill, many for months
Many others off works for compassionate reasons, dealing with the deaths of parents and husband

Hospitals overflowing , people dying of virus, strokes, cancer , the nhs declaring a state of emergency , insufficient PPE ( and staff) means that the NHS refuse to treat anyone with symptoms

Social unrest and fear so that most people don't actually want normal....Are you forcing people into pubs and shops at gunpoint?

Get a grip, the aim is to get as close to normal as quickly as possible.

Thighmageddon · 03/05/2020 17:11

For those who don't want lockdown to end... What do you think the solution is?

Phased and controlled return to work, good uptake of the app to track and trace and reiteration of social distancing is important.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 03/05/2020 17:12

As @TrustTheGeneGenie wrote

Totally agree.

What seems to be pissing most people off is the testing debacle, people not being treated sooner, people not being quarantined as soon as they arrive in the UK & seeing other countries e.g. Sweden, Denmark, Austria slowly opening things up again.

CharDeeMacDennis
Ach, you beat me to it.

I thought this was a thread by someone who'd got tired of lockdown surrounded by shop dummies.

Chloemol · 03/05/2020 17:16

Get lost

Jenasaurus · 03/05/2020 17:17

Can lockdown be extended until I have lost the weight I put on please OP, I wont fit my office clothes yet :)

Devlesko · 03/05/2020 17:17

trust

You were the one generalising, I was just putting you right.
It doesn't help anyone.
I'm glad you trust that our kids will be ok, you don't know though, anymore than anyone else.
Of course all deaths count, but I don't think there have been 28,000 suicides.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 03/05/2020 17:18

Is that you Donald?

Time to get real people
AldiAisleOfCrap · 03/05/2020 17:18

Most of us are going to get it at some point and we will be just fine. So will our families and friends
My dad died from Covid19 he wasn’t just fine!
How dare you spout such naive , ignorant comments.
