At a team Zoom meeting my boss said surely we all know someone who has had the virus.

I was the only one to shake my head!

I don't know if I know someone who has had it. I strongly suspect a friend had it in January/February, as the cough took her months to shift and she really struggled catching her breath. However, she was a close colleague and nobody else in my office caught it even though we were in very close proximity. Otherwise, I fortunately don't know anybody who has had it.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 30/04/2020 23:09

I know of 2 definites and 5 probables.
1 of the definites died, the other spent a week on a ventilator but is now home. Both relatives though not connected to each other.
The other 5 are friends or neighbours and had all the classic symptoms, but until an antibody test we don't know for sure.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 30/04/2020 23:11

I'll amend that to 8 actually. My husband's colleague died of it last week. Only in his 50's and no underlying health problems.

Inkpaperstars · 30/04/2020 23:11

I knew a lot of cases were younger people without underlying conditions, but it's shocking on this thread how many people have mentioned these being most, or even all, of the severe cases they know.

FliesandPies · 30/04/2020 23:11

I said on a similar thread last week that I didn't know anyone, and no-one I know knew anyone locally who's had it - still the same this week. Feels v strange

Gawdsake2020 · 30/04/2020 23:12

12 of my family members have had it and they live in different parts of the UK. Thankfully all over it now.

HibiscusPot · 30/04/2020 23:15

I’m in London and apart from a cluster of us at work who had it together (all mildly) I know no one who’s caught it elsewhere. No school mates, friends, vague links, people I talk to in shops or even my family members’ friends or colleagues. On social media though people seem to know people. The image of it ripping through London hasn’t been what I’ve seen, the same people seem to be on my bus each day when I go to work.

OgoPogo8 · 30/04/2020 23:15

I'm in British Columbia (Canada) and dont know anyone who has had it.

We shut down restaurants and bars far earlier into the curve than the UK did, and implemented social distancing without ever having to do a full lock down (I'm still in the office every day). COVID never really seemed to take hold; about 2000 cases including about 100 deaths in a population of 5m+.

Was a bit worried to start because about one third of Greater Vancouver is ethnically Chinese, so obviously there's a lot of travel to and from China, but we've either been extremely lucky or the government did a good job.

callmeadoctor · 30/04/2020 23:16

I know people who have "boasted" that they have had it!!! (but have they really?.....................................)

nanbread · 30/04/2020 23:17

I know of several friends and acquaintances who've had it, one died but was elderly and not in great health, one hospitalised, and then maybe another 25 or so who were ok.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 30/04/2020 23:18

I know five people. One is young, fit, no underlying conditions- they were given oxygen and released from hospital.

One spent over a week in ICU.

One died.

The other two are from the same family - one adult, one child- advised by GP they probably had it and told to self isolate.

Chosennone · 30/04/2020 23:22

East midlands here. My Uncle has died of it, care home, advanced dementia and lots of underlying conditions. Someone else i know by sight has died. Heard of 2 other deaths in older people in our town. Lots of people who think they've had it with mild symptoms.

Unmentionablesandfluff · 30/04/2020 23:24

I do unfortunately. DH used to lodge with a family 15 years ago and we’re still close-ish (dinners 3x a year); mother, father and son. Both mother and son are teachers. They are recovered but were regular visitors to an elderly family member who caught it and died. They’re now blaming themselves. Also lost someone from my class who was waiting on a kidney transplant. Neighbours sister is a nurse who caught it. She’s ok but her husband caught it and died, and she’s also blaming herself.

Grapesoda7 · 30/04/2020 23:24

I live in a large city but don't know anybody that has had it. Even a few friends who are NHS workers tested negative recently after they started showing symptoms.

However, over Christmas and through out January, several of my friends and family were really unwell for weeks and weeks with covid type illness, just thought it was flu

1FootInTheRave · 30/04/2020 23:24

I know a significant amount of confirmed cases. All colleagues.

Frontline NHS in the north west.

Dieu · 30/04/2020 23:26

I'm the same as you, OP.
Touch wood!

Microzilla · 30/04/2020 23:27

Two neighbours have died of it - one man in his late 50s and a woman in her 70s. A rabbi at a nearby synagogue died of it. Two friends have had it (not confirmed though but all the main symptoms.) One of them is just starting to feel a bit stronger 5 weeks on. DD, DSIL and DGC think they had it mildly with coughs and raised temps and the DGC had red, swollen looking eyes and littlest DGC had a rash with it. My nephew, his wife and his son had it. Their little boy was in hospital for a few days.

boredboss · 30/04/2020 23:27

Hampshire, BIL and DSIS both had it (BIL much worse, both fine now) but they both work in healthcare so more exposure than other members of the family.

JustStayHome · 30/04/2020 23:28

6 confirmed.
4 of those children

Mrsmadevans · 30/04/2020 23:28

I live in the hot spot of Wales ie the Aneurin Bevan Trust area and l don't know anyone who has had it .

CJsGoldfish · 30/04/2020 23:31

Half of MN are 'sure' they've had it. Well, it feels like half.
Complete with big long threads 'sharing' their symptoms. Strange spotlight to choose to stand under I think Confused

I don't personally know anyone but do have 2 friends who have lost a parent. I worry very much about my own parents and feel for those who are truly vulnerable, not just 'MN' vulnerable.

User202004 · 30/04/2020 23:32

No I don't know anyone either and we have family all over the country, many are still working too so not isolating.

GetUpAgain · 30/04/2020 23:32

So sad all these people whose friends and family have died, I'm so sorry.

I know loads of people, ie have large family and very sociable job, lots of friends, and weirdly I only know one person who had it and is thankfully fine now.

LarkDescending · 30/04/2020 23:35

Lots of it around me (London). My 86yr old father, diagnosed in hospital, has fortunately now recovered from it. Today my secretary was organising her mother’s socially-distanced funeral, also a confirmed case. We have also had several confirmed cases in my office, and others among friends. I don’t think I know anyone who’s ill now - it hit early round here.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 30/04/2020 23:36

I have a friend who has been really unwell with it due to poor PPE. 4 members of the theatre team with one particular patient were infected.
Whole family was unwell. Now better.

Neighbours were unwell ( v fit but 70ish) and narrowly avoided hospital - ambulance called. Picked up randomly on visit to London. Recovering well but not yet 100%.

I have asthma and am scared.

DS probably had it - symptoms after returning from ski trip to Geneva.
