I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...

Yes, I initially felt self conscious, slightly embarrassed and generally a bit of an arse. However, the sky didn't fall in, nobody pointed and laughed at me and after a few minutes I'd gotten over the initial discomfort.
I know it's not a rule to wear one, but on the list of embarrassing things I've done in my lifetime, it's very near the bottom. 😷

I'm not embarrassed at all and nor should you be!

This sums it up

Northernsoullover · 30/04/2020 13:18

Posted it twice Blush

DodgyTrousers · 30/04/2020 13:18

I wear one all the time in supermarkets
Don't give a shiny shite what anyone thinks and loads of other people wearing them too

Lindy2 · 30/04/2020 13:22

I wear one when I have to enter a shop. At first a few people did a double take. Now no one bats an eyelid.

It helps reduce transmission. Only a little bit but it does reduce transmission. Everyone should therefore be wearing one as far as I'm concerned.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/04/2020 13:22

i couldn’t give a shiny shit if anyone laughed at me, OP. It helps prevent you spreading it to others and if it’s of a good enough standard, it will afford you some protection. I haven’t been out shopping for eight weeks, as I went into lockdown before it was official. I’m considering going to my local superstore when it’s quiet, as my stocks are looking sparse in some stuff. I’ll be wearing a mask, peaked cap and large sunglasses. I’ll also be standing with one of those 60s brollies over me, while queuing outside. I couldn’t care less what others think. Let’s face it, with all that on they’re unlikely to recognise me anyway. 😁

PurpleDaisies · 30/04/2020 13:24

Er, congratulations?

I’m not sure what you’re wanting people to say. It’s your decision. I won’t be wearing one unless it becomes compulsory.

Crunched · 30/04/2020 13:24

I wore one for my weekly shop for the first time on Tuesday. I did feel self-conscious but everything Northernsoullover says is true, so I will persevere.
It was a good feeling to make empathetic eye contact with the other 2 people in the supermarket also wearing them!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/04/2020 13:25

Can I also advise those with long hair, to tie it back. I see so many women, with their hair ticking their face and them constantly brushing it from their face, it completely dismisses their efforts to stop touching their face. Mind you, at this stage of the lock down, most of us have long hair. 😁

zen1 · 30/04/2020 13:29

I don’t wear a mask, but plenty of people do round here and no one looks twice. It’s a personal choice.

Candy150 · 30/04/2020 13:30

Plenty of people around here wear them, and gloves too...no one really looks anymore

HoneyBee03 · 30/04/2020 13:33

I've seen hardly anyone wearing a mask so I'm sure I'd get a lot of strange looks if I wore one!

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/04/2020 13:35

I didn't realise how much I depend on lip reading until my customers started wearing masks.

If you're going to wear a mask and then speak to someone, fgs try to speak clearly or louder!

BlueGheko · 30/04/2020 13:35

I always wear one in shops and have done since the start of lockdwon, pretty selfish not to considering they're to protect others.

Asvan · 30/04/2020 13:36

I'll probably get slated for saying this but as a Muslim woman I find it quite funny to see how everyone else is now covering their faces too!

IsadoraQuagmire · 30/04/2020 13:37

I wear one every time I leave the house, I've got quite a few different ones.
I really like wearing them, mind you I've never felt self conscious in my life!

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 30/04/2020 13:37

Same

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 30/04/2020 13:39

Good for you.

Just please speak loudly and clearly for those who usually lipread.

Other than that, go for it.

Wobblywibblywoo · 30/04/2020 13:39

@Asvan it’s hardly the same thing is it? We arnt hiding our faces away, we are trying to protect ourselves/others from a virus, that’s a really stupid comment.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 30/04/2020 13:40

I'll probably get slated for saying this but as a Muslim woman I find it quite funny to see how everyone else is now covering their faces too!

Do you know what?
I was thinking the exact same thing (not as a Muslim, I'm not Muslim) but I was thinking how quickly people are happy to cover their faces up but didn't like to say as feared a flaming lol
(yes, I'm aware that a virus outbreak isn't the same as religious/cultural reasons etc before anyone says)

PurpleDaisies · 30/04/2020 13:40

pretty selfish not to considering they're to protect others

I don’t accept that. The evidence that the sort of mask I could get hold of without depriving people who actually need one of one would make any difference just isn’t there. I’m social distancing properly. I’m doing what the government has asked of me. Saying people who are doing that same as me are selfish is out of order.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 30/04/2020 13:40

Cross posted with wobblywibbly showing my disclaimer really was needed Grin

Branster · 30/04/2020 13:41

Lots of people have been wearing them for a while around here in the shops and when out jogging.
No need to feel self conscious.
Do what you think is best, we don’t always have to follow government advice especially if it’s not harming anyone.
I have somewhat avoided big shops a lot but when I need to go to a big supermarket I always wear mask and gloves. It’s zero hassle to manage putting them on and taking off properly. I definitely don’t judge those who don’t wear them or feel like I’m in any way fraternising with those that do.
Hardly anyone was wearing them when I started but nobody stared at me and I didn’t feel self conscious.
Yes to keeping hair tied up.

PurpleDaisies · 30/04/2020 13:43

Just please speak loudly and clearly for those who usually lipread.

That only works for some people who have a lower hearing level. My deaf friends and colleagues are terrified that mask wearing will be come compulsory for the foreseeable future.
