Wetherspoons to open in June?

As you can see from my user name I love a drink, but pubs open that early? I was expecting much later and on twitter there's a very vocal industry leader who thinks all pubs by July 1st. I know our numbers are coming down but what will pubs opening do to increase that as we all forget social distancing after a few. Maybe it'll be table service only and very spaced out

Most spoons are huge places and could easily SD. It'll be good for the staff to start working again etc but I've not heard June?
I thought pubs would open last :(

teqcar · 29/04/2020 19:14

Maybe people will vote with their feet and stay at home. I can't believe anyone would go to Wetherspoons after that way they treated staff and suppliers.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 29/04/2020 19:16

God with the customers they attract they will need security from the second they open!

HairyFloppins · 29/04/2020 19:16

Eugh. Our local Wetherspoons is filthy the majority of the time anyway. I can’t imagine going in there anytime soon.

CokeEnStock · 29/04/2020 19:18

I refuse to give that fucker any of my money,

Mapril · 29/04/2020 19:18

Our local one is quite nice but they’ll not see a penny of mine ever again.

That’ll learn ‘em.

Sadly I doubt this would happen because so long as something is cheap, people generally don't care about ethics. Also when our local spoons opened, most of the local competitors closed pretty quickly.

TeddyIsaHe · 29/04/2020 19:20

God the last place I’d want to be in the middle of a pandemic is a Wetherspoons, and I’m desperate to have a pint! I can’t imagine their clientele will adhere to social distancing in the slightest.

GreyishDays · 29/04/2020 19:21

They can think 1st July all they like. Grin

BlueBrian · 29/04/2020 19:23

Tim Martin's just making this up to get a bit of free publicity, he's got no more idea than anybody else when he's going to be allowed to open again.

Helloandwelcomehere · 29/04/2020 19:24

Are pubs not prohibited from reopening until the government permits them otherwise? This seems like a publicity stunt rather than anything more sensible than that. They may plan to open in June but that doesn't mean that they lawfully can, surely?

TeddyIsaHe · 29/04/2020 19:25

I’d wouldn’t put anything past Mr Martin. He’s a cunt of the highest order and gives no fucks. Plus he’s so far up Johnson’s arsehole I wouldn’t be surprised if he got his way tbh.

TheSandman · 29/04/2020 19:25

I refuse to give that fucker any of my money,

THIS.

The80sweregreat · 29/04/2020 19:26

My dh meets his friends in one for a pint once a week and he always moans about his filthy it is! It must be a thing. Plus the loos are on the roof. Almost.

cheninblanc · 29/04/2020 19:26

Generally the same thoughts as my own then 😄. I hope they stay closed for a while longer than July tbh.

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/04/2020 19:27

God I hope not, I want that horrible Harry Enfield character look alike to be seriously bitten on the arse. Vile man.

The80sweregreat · 29/04/2020 19:32

Teddy, oh yes! I have been in the local one once or twice ;takes so long to get back from the loos you find it's your round again !

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 29/04/2020 19:33

Nah, they won't!

To be perfectly blunt: I've been all by myself for going at three months at this point. I've not seen a single living soul I know. Not family, not friends, not colleagues, not even by accident.

It's soul destroying! There's a reason why solitary confinement is considered torture sometimes.

I'm sticking to the rules - but the second the rules relax, I couldn't give a rat's arse about ethics or solidarity or fucking principles. I just want to see people. Actual, real live, breathing fucking fellow humans to talk to.

Iamclearlyamug · 29/04/2020 19:34

I imagine they could open as a restaurant and only serve drinks alongside food? That way social distancing could still be in place. Still don't think it'll be as early as June for restaurants though

hellosunshine5 · 29/04/2020 19:40

I saw a very vague article earlier that said they were hoping to open ‘sometime in or around June’ with restrictions on the number of drinks that are served per person Hmm

FedHimtoTigers1990 · 29/04/2020 19:42

I don't normally go to whetherspoons so not too fussed but i can't see it. A bunch of drunk people trying to stay 2m apart isnt going to happen.

PicsInRed · 29/04/2020 19:42

How many Spoons patrons have been skiing in France or Italy recently?

Should have thought it was the safest thing going...even once drinks are flowing 😂

Stellamboscha · 29/04/2020 19:46

Yes, why not? The 70 somethings don't go there. For god's sake give low paid young people something they enjoy.

AhGoGo · 29/04/2020 19:46

He’ll use the restaurant approach to social distancing, use the app to order, table service and nobody at the bar. (That is of course if restaurants/cafes get the okay to reopen)

Please remember how he has treated his staff and suppliers and will continue to do so.
