Life has ground to a halt and BA don’t think we will be flying in the same numbers as before. This is 25% of their staff. This is serious.

It has to be done, we have to save the planet. The virus is a good excuse to do it. Lets be honest it wouldn't have happened otherwise.

notimagain · 06/05/2020 07:05

It has to be done,

There are ways of doing it..shock treatment and throwing tens or even hundreds of people around the world out of work pretty much instantly isn't it.

What is happening at the moment is absolutely brutal for those who work in the travel industry..and in any event I suspect you'll be disappointed about where this ends up in 2-5 years time and the industry recovers - which it will.

However take heart - you will be able to take consolation in that the current crisis has given the industry a reason to phase out the less fuel efficient aircraft.

Walkaround · 06/05/2020 08:13

No unsubsidised airline wants to do anything but contract right now - but not so much that they can’t keep up with increased demand in future and lose business to airlines that can get back up and running faster than others. The problem is, nobody knows how soon they will be able to get going again - it was originally assumed that would be far sooner than appears to be the case at the moment. On current assumptions, I don’t think there is an airline capable of surviving without help from somewhere!

Walkaround

On current assumptions, I don’t think there is an airline capable of surviving without help from somewhere!

It's starting to look that way....I think the optimistic assumption of a two-three month stop and then a quick recovery has gone like a dot over the horizon...

Didkdt · 06/05/2020 17:45

An assumption was made that all that cash BA had sloshing about could finance then through this without a bailout but then no one seemed to factor in the number of refunds that would be required.
I think though that IAG would be reluctant to hand over a chunk of their most profitable part of the business in return for aid.

BubblesBuddy · 06/05/2020 18:01

This government won’t want BA on its books. They don’t like their stake in a bank or two either. We don’t have nationalised industries now and haven’t since the 80s.

Norwegian have shut up shop for a year. Virgin are 49% American owned. Others will go back Krupp or become state owned. BA might but loans would be more likely.

They’ll be rehiring crew when air travel picks up next year. Why be crew on a zero hour minimum wage, minimum rest contract when a supermarket pays more with no jet lag?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/05/2020 13:28

Interesting link, notimagain. Remembering that nothing can happen anyway before union consultation's completed, I'm now even more convinced that the "12,000 redundancies" are sabre-rattling, intended to get the skies opened without undue delay

Didkdt · 07/05/2020 14:51

A large part of this is to annihilate legacy fleet
As someone mentioned much further up the proposals that went to cabin crew were not thought up as a response to Covid.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 07/05/2020 14:56

BA want to dump the expensive staff anyway. Now is a good time to do so.

If/when things recover to the way they were before, they'll re-hire people on the new, far cheaper terms.

They obviously won't be relishing the £billions in losses, but they'll be happy to have this opportunity.

notimagain · 07/05/2020 16:14

As in shades of how WW "solved" the stand-ff with HMG over volcanic ash stand off?

I'd like to think that's the case, I really would but TBH even if HMG opened up UK skies tomorrow to domestics it wouldn't really solve the problem of what the heck do you with all the crew and aircraft with Europe/rest of the world still well locked down ?

I've got a French government news conference on ATM and they have just announced are still going to be restricting entry for some time to come, so there goes a quick ramping up of services to Paris, Toulouse, Lyon etc. It's similar across the EU and as for places that are Long haul bread and butter, money earning destinations ..I'm not sure the likes of Singapore are the least bit interested in the Brits ATM...

Sadly I think it's more than sabre rattling..

Why be crew on a zero hour minimum wage, minimum rest contract when a supermarket pays more with no jet lag?

For the glamour of course..... Hmm

BubblesBuddy · 07/05/2020 17:02

Because it’s not the same job! One does have more prestige! You could fly with Ryanair of course. Do they pay top whack? Lots of perks? Try and work for them. Companies do what they need to survive and if they need to reposition within the very restricted market, that’s what they will do. I am amazed anyone thinks they won’t. They could do a Norwegian and close down for a year. Would that be better? What do they pay staff during that year? They are an airline beloved of MN.

I still think the 100 looks like it says "Loo" with loo rolls.

Parker231 · 10/05/2020 19:39

Saw this on BBC news twitter feed - it’s going to kill off the travel and airline industry.

In his national address UK PM Boris Johnson says he is "serving notice that it will soon be the time... to impose quarantine on people coming into this country by air" in a bid to stop "re-infection"
