Am I missing something? Everyone seems to have gone back to normal?!

So much traffic here today, we live on a main road and it's been quiet for weeks now but today it's suddenly back to how it was pre lockdown.
Loads of people out on the streets, in quite big groups, a massive load of runners in a group just gone by and earlier a huge group of cyclists
And I've not been watching out particularly we our living room looks out over the road and I've been stuck under DS with the windows open and just looked up when I've heard noise.
Do you think people have had enough and just gone back to normal after all the media articles this week?
Did I miss an announcement? Not being disingenuous honestly wondering, I can't find anything online

And I still think either many posters on here all live in one particular area, or there really is some kind of manipulation attempt going on. If that's true, will people fall for the "if you can't beat 'em, join them" push or will they send through it?

maudspellbody · 25/04/2020 17:54

I just got upset with a friend of mine.

He called me while walking back home from his parents' house where he had gone to meet up with them and his brother and his family.
He said it was all ok because they were social distancing and sitting in the garden all 2 metres apart.

I am upset because my DS's stepmum (who is also one of my best friends) lost her father yesterday to
Cancer. And because of the lockdown, she was only allowed to actually be with him for his final few hours. He has been in a hospice for weeks and she hasn't been allowed to go.

So I think it's horribly selfish not to stick to the rules. It's the same rules for everyone. Lots of people can't see their families at the moment. We are all having to suck it up.

I am aware that I am over-sensitive right now because I'm upset about the death of a man I was very fond of. So I may have over reacted.

I just think it's selfish.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/04/2020 17:57

i ernt to the shop earlier for 2 cans of baileys latte,

Is that nice?

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/04/2020 17:58

Seems to be quiet here from what i can hear as I haven’t been out

This ‘everyone is breaking lockdown’ is pissing me right off...quite obviously its not everyone

Bringringbring12 · 25/04/2020 18:01

So in response to me saying “I’m living”

I get * Fucking good for you*

Lovely Grin

As for wanting lockdown to continue. No. I want it to end when safe to do so. Until then, as a single parent of two primary children - hell yes I will continue “living” and always looking for the positives.

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2020 18:02

Made in, I bought hand sanitizer in m and s food hall today! Was out for bread and some meds and saw it at the end of the aisles big bottle too. Not m and s own make but they had a few out!

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 25/04/2020 18:03

Well I have not moved outside all day. I'm following the guidelines and will go for my one walk later. I think someone should send this thread to the government. Clearly enough is not being done to make people realise the dangers of going out/mixing etc. Highly irritating for those of us who are being compliant. I'm missing my family as much as anyone else, and I live alone.

CrazyTeaDrinker · 25/04/2020 18:05

I got stuck in traffic today going to get my Asda Click and Collect

A local bottle neck traffic light junction that on a usual Saturday afternoon takes 10 minutes to get through took 8 minutes today. 2 weeks ago today at the same time I sailed straight through.
The pavements were as busy as any Saturday. Thepark i drove past had grouos sat on blankets, groups of teens on bikes and larger groups playing football.
A group of cyclists overtook me in the traffic jam. The queue for our B&Q was out of the retail park and down the dual carriageway.
Kids are playing in our street and 2 doors down are having a rowdy BBQ (actually sounds like fun) and onlyb1 couple usually live there, their guests im guessing are in the new 3 different to usual cars outside our houses.
Our local police have had a moan on SM about people flocking to the local beaches whilst the car parks are closed.
This is definately the busiest I've seen it since lockdown began. There is a big difference.

As soon as the peak was announced this mentality was always going to happen when added with apathy for lockdown. You can see why there is such reluctance to discuss properly our way out of this because it's just being asked about right now and everyone's gone crazy.

How is that selfish? How is that not okay? 2 meters is the apparent safe distance. If they're following all other the rules then that increases their risk by practically zero.

I've noticed more and more on here than when people say "They're selfish!!" "You're selfish!!" "It's so selfish!!" They are actually just pissed off that someone else is doing something they can't / don't want to do.

If you want to go and sit in your mum's garden at 2m difference then go and do it 🤷🏻‍♀️

And I hate to break this to you... but we could have solved lack of clean drinking water in Africa years ago, or ended child poverty, or treated malaria in poorer countries if we'd all donated 50% of our wages. We didn't though, because we're all fucking selfish to one degree or another. Such is human nature.
Why are you surprised Confused

RingPiece · 25/04/2020 18:12

Typical pre-lockdown Saturday afternoon in SE London here. Had our daily walk through the park. People were in groups of up to ten/ twelve sitting on the grass having picnics, drinking, music playing.
People were playing 5-a-side football.
Loads of people sunbathing, tops off, putting on sun cream.
Had to constantly move out if the way of all the people walking towards us.
Not seen it like this since lockdown began. It's really worrying and I think people have just assumed it's all over.

maudspellbody · 25/04/2020 18:12

succedaneum

Fair enough. I did say I was over sensitive today. You are probably right.

Queeftastic · 25/04/2020 18:15

Significantly more traffic here too.I don't think it's just physical lockdown fatigue in itself. The loss of patience/waning commitment is creeping in from the situation as a whole.

Cantaloupeisland · 25/04/2020 18:16

Far busier here both in terms of traffic and people. Small ish seaside town, SE England. The seafront was rammed today, mainly with families but quite a few groups of teens out. I'm still working and the traffic has markedly increased in the last five days or so. No judgement of any of this, just observations!

HopelessLayout · 25/04/2020 18:17

Someone from our local hospital actually just posted on FB that they are expecting to see a rise in cases in 10 days as a result of today's behavior and begging with everyone to stay inside tomorrow.

Wheresthebeach · 25/04/2020 18:17

We just came back from our walk early as it was so busy.

Roads busy as well, actually had to use the lights to cross and there was no way we could just wander across like last week. I don't know where everyone is going, I get the walking but all the cars on London roads is odd (unless there has been a mad rush to B&Q!). In short - its packed out there.

feelingverylazytoday · 25/04/2020 18:20

Still lockdown here. Haven't noticed any big groups or people sunbathing. Just queuing for the shops, and moving over to give other people space, as per usual.

Madein1995 · 25/04/2020 18:20

The baileys lattes are divine rufus lovely and creamy. The shop only had two cans, hope they get more soon! Is only the small tesco express I've seen them in as well x

FourTeaFallOut · 25/04/2020 18:24

I wonder if everyone has looked at the weather forecast and making the most of the last good day?

I'm shielding and I live on a cul de sac, so I have no idea what's happening out there in the real world although my Mum said she saw far more people and cars out and about when walking her dog.

Fwiw, I'm finding the lockdown easy even though my family haven't so much as had a walk around the block over the last five weeks. I'm only saying that for balance. I'm not an outlier in any respect so, while it's clear that some find the lock down intolerable, I don't think huge swathes of the population would call this not living.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/04/2020 18:26

The baileys lattes are divine rufus lovely and creamy

Oh ok might try one on Your recommendation Grin

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2020 18:26

The staff in m and s looked cheesed off. They had sanitizer and screens up and people were being good , but it's still stressful.
I feel for the retail sector. They have had it difficult from day one with panic buying madness and the general risk they take. I know it's not a keyworker position like the nhs is but they have been overlooked for other things I think. The big stores will make big profits but few will give the workers a bonus. ( m and s and Morrison's are but not heard about any others)

SellFridges · 25/04/2020 18:27

Define normal? It’s not back to normal round here and I live in a fairly central suburb of a major city. Very few people out and about for anything other than exercise. Some socially distanced queues outside shops.

I think there may be a few more cars around but that’s because 5 weeks into lockdown and seven or so weeks into some form of distancing people are starting to need more stuff. More shopping than they can carry locally, because stocks are down, things that have broken etc.

Some idiots will be meeting family in particular because they think they’re immortal but they’ve been doing that for weeks.

Londonmummy66 · 25/04/2020 18:27

I volunteer for a food bank twice a week in a central part of London. There were a lot more cars on the roads when we were out doing deliveries today than there have been in the past 2 weeks. There were also a lot more people in the local shopping centre - long queues for the supermarkets and Superdrug/Poundland which are all enforcing social distance measures (including taping spaces for the queues). However all the little food shops were heaving with no attempt to restrict numbers going in and out.

However, where I live there are lots of people living in small flats with limited space to store food and who don't have cars etc so need to carry their shopping home so they aren't able to do a fortnightly Waitrose shop or sit on the Ocado queue to get a weekly delivery slot. I can see why if you are having to shop every couple of days you might get fed up with the long queues and decide to pile in and use the smaller shops though.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/04/2020 18:36

I'm surprised Londonmummy66 Many people living in central London don't drive. I wonder if they were heading out to the seaside or countryside?

I got a shopping trolley a few years ago. So useful for shopping trips on foot. It's a shame for the purposes of social distancing people don't follow the lead of food banks. I understand you can't keep fresh food so presumably your clients use a lot if tinned and other long-life food. Thank you for doing what you do. It's very wrong that we need food banks but whilst we do volunteers like you are so important.

BlueBrian · 25/04/2020 18:37

Definitely busier in this small northern city, the traffic noise outside is far more noticeable than it has been for weeks.

pointythings · 25/04/2020 18:38

It's still just as quiet where I am, thank goodness. Queues for supermarket shorter than usual this morning, but we did get there a bit early. There are people out exercising, but everyone is distancing and no large groups of anything.
But we're in a small town surrounded by rural areas so it's much easier - I can't imagine how hard it must be in a city with limited outdoor space.
