Am I missing something? Everyone seems to have gone back to normal?!

So much traffic here today, we live on a main road and it's been quiet for weeks now but today it's suddenly back to how it was pre lockdown.
Loads of people out on the streets, in quite big groups, a massive load of runners in a group just gone by and earlier a huge group of cyclists
And I've not been watching out particularly we our living room looks out over the road and I've been stuck under DS with the windows open and just looked up when I've heard noise.
Do you think people have had enough and just gone back to normal after all the media articles this week?
Did I miss an announcement? Not being disingenuous honestly wondering, I can't find anything online

I think it's also the fact that Chris Witty said earlier this week that social distancing will continue until there is a vaccine. Obviously because he didn't properly explain that a lot of people took that to mean that it would be lockdown for the forseeable future and therefore thought well sod it, I'm not waiting a year to see my mum so I may as well just go and see her today.

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2020 16:42

Exactly! B and Q opens up but it's still ' stay at home ' etc etc etc
! I despair

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 16:43

Gabsalot opening everything would just explode exponential growth. Easy to see. B&Q won’t do that.

MrsExpo · 25/04/2020 16:43

It's bit mixed here (rural midlands)... went to the supermarket yesterday and it was busy, but controlled queueing, of course. Traffic on the main road but the village itself is about as quiet. People I've met have all expressed a sense of resentment and frustration that this thing is still on going, but acknowledge that it needs to happen to get the virus under control.

Maybe we need a reminder about what we can, and cannot do.

It was very unhelpful that the police guidelines were published, as they are NOT the rules. They are guidelines for the police to enforce the rules as fairly and reasonably as possible. Lets see what happens over the next week or so. I share the frustration of many on here that some seem to be doing the right thing and some seem to be flouting the rules now.

Pasghetti · 25/04/2020 16:44

Gradual creep of activity here

twinnywinny14 · 25/04/2020 16:45

B and Q were always allowed to stay open but chose to close themselves as they felt the couldn’t maintain social distancing. Obviously now they have seen supermarkets doing it they have decided they can do so therefore are reopening. Right or wrong they are allowed to do so. My concern is a second wave and therefore extension of lockdown, many on here shoot me down on this theory but I cannot understand how the government will relax restrictions if infection rates start climbing again?

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2020 16:45

I'm astonished that the government isn't admitting the messages were mixed but read any thread or newspaper or twitter and many many people were confused about the rules! Am I alone in thinking she isn't living in the real world?

IrmaFayLear · 25/04/2020 16:46

People don't care anymore is the feeling I'm getting. The press have a lot to answer for as well.

I agree with this. And on the one hand we've got the press (and many people in real life and indeed on MN) baying for a release from lockdown, and on the other we've the press again ready to go insane if there's even one Covid death of someone of 98 who has been ill for 10 years.

I have noticed a huge number of people passing my house in the last few days (cycling, running, family groups out walking... and it's just a suburban road) and several people (window cleaner, odd job man) have contacted me to say they're back working now Hmm

Boredinthehouse · 25/04/2020 16:46

Life seems practically normal where I live too. People have gone back to work, more shops are opening claiming they’re essential, grandparents have been visiting the neighbours, friends visiting opposite, and the roads are busy.

Bathroom12345 · 25/04/2020 16:47

So generally 1600 people die every day. Are these figures in additon to the 800 today or are all the stats mixed up? If you are tested after you pass away and you have CV19 then that is what will be put on your death certificate? Even if you are 95?

All these people having bbqs.... why aren’t they stopped. I would report if I saw something like that. It’s not good moaning about it to a group of strangers. Sorry, but I would be boiling mad if this went on longer than 2 more weeks because of these selfish buggers. And if no one stops them then they will crack on. Perhaps they have no jobs to go to or are enjoying behaving like prat’s on the tax payers shilling.

Chocolatecakeandpinkcustard · 25/04/2020 16:47

Fgs because B&Q sell stuff that people need to maintain their home and because it's fairly easy to shop safely in a large store like B&Q. It also gets people back to work.

There are only mixed messages if you've only got half a brain working.

As for driving for a walk, again, it's common sense. So for example I don't need to drive because I've got green spaces within walking distance. For others it may get be safer to drive a short distance to a green space.

It's unlikely to spread the virus walking around outside.

lilgreen · 25/04/2020 16:48

Duplicate thread.

Boredinthehouse · 25/04/2020 16:48

And I’ve seen lots of families meeting up for walks together and not following the 2m rule.

Confused it’s so blatant and people are so blasé - I felt like I had missed an announcement!

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2020 16:49

Chocolate, read any thread on mumsnet about coronavirus and people were unsure about what to do or not what to do etc.
Bit harsh to call people stupid!

lljkk · 25/04/2020 16:49

Feels just as shut down as ever here. Then again, I don't get out much.

You can see live webcams of city centre places here.

They don't look very busy to me - not what I would expect on a normal nice weather Saturday, anyway.

Healthyandhappy · 25/04/2020 16:50

Because we are in lockdown to protect the NHS yet the NHS is empty with over 10k beds and thinking of starting surgery again heard it on dearne fm earlier also saying attend a and e when needed. Think.people forget the nhs make.money on. Outpatients appointments and planned surgery!.

riannonmas · 25/04/2020 16:51

lljkk

It doesn’t seem to be city centres so much but more small towns from what I’ve seen

IndiaMay · 25/04/2020 16:52

B&Q is very different to other shops! Its DIY and hardware! Their click and collect service was taking 5 days to ful fill orders. I have one very old bathroom at home. If our toilet stopped working I dont want to wait 5 days for whatever part we need to fix it to come in! Where the hell would we go to the loo? It's a relief to know it's an option to go there now.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/04/2020 16:54

lilgreen There have been several similar to threads over the past couple of days. All worded almost exactly the same. Either the OPs all live in the same area, or its almost as if someone wants people to think everyone else is "back to normal" and ignoring lockdown (and the reality of a very infectious disease circulating). It's an excellent way of encouraging people to do just that. People can be very easily manipulated. If they think everyone else is doing something...

GabsAlot · 25/04/2020 16:54

stil nothing on easing up not that people are taking notice-waste of a briefing today

Greenpop21 · 25/04/2020 16:54

B&Q never needed to close, hardware was allowed to stay open. They closed, I presume, to work out how they would implement social distancing.

SouthsideOwl · 25/04/2020 16:55

Y'all do realise that this is a grace period where things are figured out, right?

Things WILL reopen. I cannot believe how absolutely deluded a huge amount of posters are.

mencken · 25/04/2020 16:55

seems pretty quiet here in a village - I can hear the main road except for the last few weeks I haven't. And the fuckers with the barking dog are clearly still at home as it only barks for a short time, not the usual hours.

Wales have actually brought in new rules this weekend - clarifying some common sense. Eg. cycling alone or only with your household, no further than say 10 miles from your home (which still makes for reasonable exercise for those who cycle regularly). No outdoor swimming which should help to keep the dumbos off the beaches.

so no, nothing has changed, except many are as stupid as they always were. If more businesses can reopen that is of course good.

Greenpop21 · 25/04/2020 16:56

It’s the same as it has been for weeks here. Only see dog walkers and exercisers and a few cars.

GabsAlot · 25/04/2020 16:56

sorry chocolate its not clear about the driving to exercise at all
