When can hairdressers re-open?

They can limit customers so the chairs are spaced out.
Same person washes your hair as cuts it.
Anti bac their hands between customers.
Wear masks and limit chit chat.

In terms of the necessity of having your hair done, well it simply isn't necessary. At the end of the day, it is a luxury really. But I would hate to see all the independents go bust purely for their own sakes, not mine.

I have always done my husbands hair and also do my DDs hair (4 DDs), all over the age of 8. I quite enjoy having my hair done but will happily forego it for as long as necessary.

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 02/05/2020 15:14

My hairdresser has just completed a barbicide? Course and updated hygiene practices as well as looking into safe ways of working. I may sound completely selfish but having my hair done is part of my self esteem and how I see myself and I’m sure there a lot like myself, it is part of my mental well-being

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/05/2020 15:21

TheCountess I feel the same about my hair. I don't have it cut regularly but it's coloured monthly and I hate it at the moment. I've coloured it myself and it was ok-ish but too dark and the grey roots are now looking awful. I should have been having it coloured today 😢

InfiniteSheldon · 02/05/2020 15:24

I'm going on Tuesday taking as many precautions as possible but my hairdresser is self employed, single and has a mortgage to pay. I offered to pay her half (and have no haircut/colour) just to give her something and she's said no please come I have a system in place for 1 client a day.

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 02/05/2020 15:27

@PinkSparklyPussyCat I darent touch mine due to The way it is coloured. I have seen people saying get your hairdresser to mix you up a colour but my hairdresser said they can’t do this as the colour starts developing immediately once exposed to the air so is pretty pointless anyway. I understand it’s not a necessity to some people but then there is all the shouting about people’s mental health at the minute and my hair is part of mine

IcedPurple · 02/05/2020 15:27

It's interesting that in the plan announced for Ireland last night, hairdressers will be one of the last things to open, whereas in other countries, such as (I believe) Greece and Switzerland, they will be among the first.

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 02/05/2020 15:28

@InfiniteSheldon I go to a small hairdresser in a town close to me who has always done one in one out

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 02/05/2020 15:29

@IcedPurple I saw that on the thread to do with Ireland, how are they being supported? What date is that? Some countries never closed their salons e.g. Spain so they obviously think it is essential

IcedPurple · 02/05/2020 15:32

I don't think the Irish re-opening dates are set in stone, but I think hairdressers is projected to be towards the end of June, which is still 2 months away. I'm surprised to hear that they were never obliged to close in Spain, given how strict their lockdown was.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/05/2020 15:35

@TheCountessatHotelCortez I've been having all over colour for a while now but today I should have been having colour and highlights ready to go in holiday on Thursday. I understand what you're saying about mental health, I wish I didn't worry so much about my hair but I do. The stupid thing is I rarely wear makeup, I just worry about my hair

daisymay133 · 02/05/2020 15:37

Honestly it’ll be business as usual by summer

People are scaremongering

They’re already talking about relaxing the 2m rule. They’ll get rid of it to allow businesses

People will open and people will go

I’d go tomorrow if they were open as would most people I know

People who want to hide from a virus that’ll still be there when we unlock go ahead but the risk for me is ridiculously low and I should be able to balance my own personal risk

Lockdown is a huge massive over reaction and hugely out of proportion for the majority of population

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 02/05/2020 15:43

@daisymay133 I agree with you to a certain extent I think that should people wish to continue on lockdown that is entirely up to them but for myself and my family the risk is tiny, I’m more likely to die in a car accident on the way to the hairdresser 🙈 I work frontline community nhs and in my area they have been foretelling of patients coming to us in an apocalyptic nature which has yet to materialise 7 weeks later which is good thank god

IcedPurple · 02/05/2020 15:45

Honestly it’ll be business as usual by summer

Much as I'd love to agree with you, unless there is an unexpected sudden breakthrough in vaccine development, it won't be.

People who want to hide from a virus that’ll still be there when we unlock go ahead but the risk for me is ridiculously low and I should be able to balance my own personal risk

But it isn't just about you. It's a highly contagious disease. If you were to contract the disease and suffer only minor symptoms, you could stil infect several others, who could go on to infect others, who could then in turn infect others and so on. So even if you're prepared to risk your personal health, you don't have the right to risk that of others.

daisymay133 · 02/05/2020 15:50

Perhaps not -you’re right but I can guarantee they’ll be pushing for this lockdown to be over ASAP

The scene has already been set

Schools will be back after whit and I bet even full schedule given they’ll lose the 2m rule. So social distancing gone. It’ll be all wash your hands instead and temp checks

Everyone else will then have to go back as they’ll be able to work in under 2m. It’s that very specific rule that’s resulted in many businesses having to work from home so that’s a lot of people who can return to work

And when they do, everyone will be exposing and mixing so much that it won’t be worth keeping other businesses like salons shut

At the end of the day even if they very quickly find a vaccine it’ll take another year to get round 66 million people

So if we can’t lock down for two years (we can’t), then lockdown is only about not overwhelming nhs

Whilst nhs has capacity - it does - then businesses should stay open

BlueBrian · 02/05/2020 21:43

Looks like the people who want lockdown to end soon are a very small minority.

Fearful Britons remain strongly opposed to lifting lockdown
Just one in five want schools, pubs and restaurants to be reopened, according to new poll by Opinium.

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 03/05/2020 08:39

So hairdressers shouldn’t have an issue then if there isn’t going to be a mad rush to places, let those of us who want to go out go and others can make their own choice?

Coffeepot72 · 08/05/2020 08:59

Fingers crossed that the Sunday announcement will give salons and clients some hope?

Elieza · 08/05/2020 10:34

Not in Scotland mind as we got the virus after England got it, so we are a week or two behind the curve so we need to wait a bit to try and ensure it doesn’t kick off again. My skunk roots will need to wait a few weeks more 🦨 Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 08/05/2020 10:44

"Trust me, as soon as hairdressers are open for business their clients will come flooding back."

Some will, some won't
Obviously few of the 1.5 million shielded and only some of the 15 million vulnerable

SImilarly for restaurants, nail parlours, the leisure industry ....

many businesses won't be able to make a profit when a good chunk of their customers stay away
Regardless of when the government allow resumption of business, some businessses will not be able to adapt enough to survive

BigChocFrenzy · 08/05/2020 10:46

Even a chunk of the more vulnerable customers going half as often will ruin some small businesss

The Grey Pound is important - and some of it won't be going out much, or at all

HoldMyLobster · 08/05/2020 14:10

Hairdressers and barbers were given the go ahead to reopen here last Friday. DH and DS got their hair cut Tuesday, and the barber said business has been non-stop. I'd assume this will slow down once the backlog has caught up.

Coffeepot72 · 08/05/2020 15:26

@HoldMyLobster are you in the UK?

HoldMyLobster · 08/05/2020 16:48

No I'm in New England. Phased reopening underway in my state.

HeIenaDove · 08/05/2020 16:48

I bought snap hair clips, headbands and tortoiseshell bulldog hair clips yesterday for pinning my fringe off my face and out of my eyes. I already had/have bobby pins but they dont hold it for long.

I have what feels like a painful trapped nerve in my neck. I thought i must have slept awkwardly and its been like it for over a week.

It was DH who said Its probably where youve been doing those little head jerks because your fringe is in your eyes. Last night i couldnt sleep properly because it was bloody painful.

I cant cut it. I just dont have the expertise. And i was also touching my face more which we are not supposed to do.

Re. colour I have my roots done every five weeks My last hair appointment was the 12th March. I have a lot of grey coming through now and have been using the Loreal Magic Retouch root concealer spray. But my hair is so thick there are layers and layers coming through now because its been two months and that spray wont cover it all. I keep missing bits. For the same reason i dont want to home dye it myself It would take boxes of the stuff and end up a disaster.

Last weekend i reached a really low point and wanted to shave my head.

Did a Google and found there were lots of women feeling the same way and they have gone through with it.
Some are saying its a form of taking back control.

Much more of this and there will be less women who need the hairdresser.

HeIenaDove · 08/05/2020 16:52

Then there is the fucking chin hair. That was last done on the 10th March.

Ive missed one hair appointment and two chin waxes. I tried facial hair removal cream 3 years ago. Thought id save a bit of money on wax appointments Followed all the instructions and still got a chemical burn.
