When can hairdressers re-open?

They can limit customers so the chairs are spaced out.
Same person washes your hair as cuts it.
Anti bac their hands between customers.
Wear masks and limit chit chat.

@girlcalledjames I think there is a lot of evidence that points towards viral load and severity but happy to be corrected

“If I worked in a personal service like hairdressing or beauty I would be busily working out what new career I would have. I honestly don’t see the demand coming back for these services anytime soon.“

Not so easy when it’s been your life for 30+ years. Also your clients are your friends not just your clients.
My husband has a hair salon, the majority of his clients are older. It is a nightmare

Bluntness100 · 24/04/2020 19:45

I suspect if they don’t open soon hairdressers will get inventive and do home visits. Both parties can wear a mask for much of the interaction. Personally I’m not seeing the issue. Risk can be mitigated.

Itsjustmee · 24/04/2020 20:02

I read today in one of the papers that in Italy hairdresser and salons are planning to open in mid May

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 24/04/2020 20:25

I have decided to give up on hairdressers and may start wearing my hair in a plait or a bun, or a plait rolled up into a bun like the Christian maiden aunties from my youth

That is my plan

Not even joking I don’t think Grin

"We will change our habits and expectations of what is essential to us"

According to posts on here some employers didnt get the memo!

MNers panicking how they are going to look in Zoom meetings and/or when they go back to work. And the DHs hair because certain standards are still expected.

So its some employers who need to lower their expectations and remember we are in a pandemic and the salons are closed.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/04/2020 22:31

For me it’s nothing to do with my employer, it’s how I look and feel about myself. If I end up with several inches of grey roots i know it’ll get me down. I don’t care about doing my own nails but my hair is important to me

Trust me, as soon as hairdressers are open for business their clients will come flooding back.

@Parsley1234 yes, I very much agree with you. One of the most unwell people I heard about From Covid was, in fact a beautician who had a higher load evidently and was therefore more poorly.

SpiritEssence · 25/04/2020 05:53

This actually has turned out well for me as dd has her hair done every 8 weeks and was due to have it done the week after lockdown started.
When I was younger intrained in a college to properly colour hair and know how to cut hair. So saved her alot of money ;)

Nquartz · 25/04/2020 07:16

I know a hairdresser who has gone mobile & is going to client's houses and cutting their hair in their gardens. Apparently it's ok because they're outside!

My hair is fine, the grey isn't really noticeable luckily & I just put it up but my legs haven't been waxed for 9 weeks 😱 I've got an epilator but it hurts too much so I'll Veet them in the interim.

AuntieMarys · 25/04/2020 07:37

You certainly see how quickly your hair grows with roots! I am both fascinated and horrified that my fringe may be totally white by the end of this.

Parsley1234 · 25/04/2020 07:45

@Moomin8 thank you 🙏 I suspected this was the case and now it’s confirmed it’s just not worth getting sick it makes me so sad I’ve had salons for 20 years and my one now is the best one I’ve ever had ❤️

BiteyShark · 25/04/2020 07:51

This is one time I am glad I embraced the grey rather than dyeing. I also have a haircut that can be left for a long time or tied up.

But I want them to open soon as it's about getting back to some type of normality for the economy.

missyB1 · 25/04/2020 07:53

This is when I envy people with long hair Sad I have a pixie cut because I have very thick strong difficult hair. I usually have it cut every six weeks to keep it under control. Lots of hairdressers struggle with my hair so zero chance I can do a decent cut myself.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 25/04/2020 07:59

Sadly, I think you’re right. I know so many people who seem to want their hair and nails done and are saying they’d have them done now if they could and accept the risks.

Parsley1234 · 25/04/2020 08:08

@EveryLifeHasASoundtrack it’s not so much the risk to customers although yes I agree there is risk it’s the therapist hairdresser whose viral load gets more and more intense with every client.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 25/04/2020 08:22

But what's the answer? It's not feasible for hairdressers (or any other business) to remain closed until a vaccine is found. Someone upthread said they would be looking for another job if they were in the beauty industry. That won't be easy. Many people have lost or will lose their jobs because of this and will have the experience for the jobs they apply for.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 25/04/2020 08:35

Exactly.

People are extremely selfish. But as long as their hair/nails look good right. 🙄 I really hope places like hairdressers are the last places to open.

LaureBerthaud · 25/04/2020 09:06

It's nothing to do with being selfish. My hairdresser and her staff want to get back to work and earn a living to pay their bills.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 25/04/2020 09:26

It is selfish. We’re in the middle of a pandemic, it doesn’t matter if people’s hair looks nice. It’s not important. Your hairdresser will get help to pay her bills. What she wants is to have normal life back. We all do. But that can’t happen yet.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 25/04/2020 09:37

Your hairdresser will get help to pay her bills

You make it sound so easy. You do realise that help won't go on forever?

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 25/04/2020 09:45

None of us know what will happen. Many of us have uncertainty over our futures and will potentially have to change our lives. It’s crap, but it is what it is.

Miljea · 25/04/2020 10:20

About the mask thing:

The government are peddling the idea that wearing masks out and about is not only not necessary, but a bad thing as apparently it will make us all cavalier about safety - because they know there aren't enough masks for HPCs as it is, especially the FPE3 ones.

Wearing one of those properly does reduce the risks, otherwise HCPs wouldn't bother, would they?

And the risks are highest when there is aerosol Covid in the air, such as ventilators produce.

IMO, I'd get my hair done by a willing hairdresser wearing a FPE3 masks, and would wear one myself except that would make hair cutting tricky!

Parsley1234 · 25/04/2020 11:20

@Miljea you can have your hair/nail/waxing whatever done that’s your choice it’s not you who will get sick it’s the therapist I’m writing here from a therapists perspective 🙏
