When can hairdressers re-open?

They can limit customers so the chairs are spaced out.
Same person washes your hair as cuts it.
Anti bac their hands between customers.
Wear masks and limit chit chat.

None of us know what will happen. Many of us have uncertainty over our futures and will potentially have to change our lives. It’s crap, but it is what it is.

Exactly. So why if someone is allowed to work and is comfortable doing so (I'm not advocating forcing hairdressers into salons against their will) wouldn't they?

By nature, we go along with what others do. So one hairdresser opens as they genuinely feel comfortable. Others open because they feel they should because others are. Same with customers. It doesn’t mean it’s right. Or the safest option. It’s not necessary on any level for hairdressers to be open even if they’re comfortable.

Parsley1234 · 25/04/2020 12:10

@EveryLifeHasASoundtrack this 🙏

Letsdrinkgin · 25/04/2020 12:35

I've seen job advertisements for hairdressers.

SunShine682 · 25/04/2020 12:57

Others open because they feel they should because others are

Then they should get a back bone and think for themselves.

If a hairdresser is happy to open and a customer wants to go then it’s up to them.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 25/04/2020 13:28

Yes, but that’s unlikely to happen. Many people just go along with stuff unfortunately.

The government needs to ensure that people are not put in the situation in the first place. Hairdressers should be one of the last places to open, they don’t provide anything that is even vaguely essential.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 25/04/2020 13:44

If a hairdresser is happy to open and a customer wants to go then it’s up to them.

And it’s this attitude that’s just so selfish. It’s not just the hairdresser and customer that has that is at risk. It is every person that has to come into contact with them, in a supermarket for example or their families they return home to. And then if they get ill, the NHS staff have to treat them and put their life at risk. And if this happens too often, the NHS won’t cope. This has been explained so many times. But as long as your hair looks good....ok then.

You do realise that hairdressers, like the rest of us, will have bills to pay? And that no help has been given to the self employed yet? And even when it is it won't be never ending and they will have to work at some point?

I know a hairdressers isn't essential, but it's pretty essential to the person trying to keep a roof over their head!

Delatron · 25/04/2020 16:34

I think it’s a good point we can’t all stay off work for years. Some people’s jobs will be more risky than others; healthcare workers, supermarket workers, public transport workers, teachers and yes people like hairdressers who are in close contact with people.

I will repeat this as everyone seems to forget. The aim is not to stop everyone getting the virus! It’s to slow it’s inevitable spread and stop the NHS being overwhelmed. The NHS has coped and we are past the peak.

Businesses will start up again and there will be some risk.

NoggintheNogs · 25/04/2020 16:47

I can't read all the posts, but my hairdresser emailed to say they are hoping to re open in mid May.

I have an appt booked for later that month (moved from just after they were told to close) but I'm not hopeful it will happen.

Moomin8 · 30/04/2020 12:43

It probably won’t happen. Information is coming out that lockdown will be in place until June.

CrotchetyQuaver · 30/04/2020 12:59

TBH I'd settle for a wet haircut from my hairdresser out in the fresh air if it was possible. I would wash my hair beforehand and do without the pro salon finishing touches. If we both feel well with no symptoms and both wear masks and gloves and keep conversation to the minimum I think the risk would be very low?

Elieza · 01/05/2020 08:35

We are being told not to buy the most effective type of masks as the nhs needs them.

That means whatever face covering you use will not be as effective.

The virus is so small it apparently flies straight through fabric. Onto the wearers face in these masks or scarves.

When it’s the wearer breathing out more particles are weighted down by dampness and more stay in the mask. More not all.

So both wearers need to stay as far away as possible to avoid potentially infected droplets so small you can’t see them but are breathing them out into the air through the covering all the time. That’s why there’s the the whole 2m thing.

Nobody has arms 2m long do haircuts are too risky really.

It’s people who haven’t read up on masks and face coverings that have delayed the introduction of face coverings.

Because people feel the second the have a mask on they are invincible. This terrifies the government because once they have a face covering they will be out at friends houses ‘in ok I have a mask on’ visiting relatives ‘im ok I have a mask on’ visiting elderly parents for a social call ‘I’m ok I have a mask on’ etc. Potentially spreading the virus which they may not know they have as they are symptomless.

We have to remember that a mask or face covering can’t protect you. It can help you not infect others. It’s for their benefit not yours.

Moomin8 · 01/05/2020 08:39

@Elieza I agree.

I can’t believe people put haircuts above the health & wellbeing of others to be honest. I miss my treatments too but would not have them at any cost.

No salon should be sending out emails about reopening yet.

Enchanted19 · 01/05/2020 11:47

I hope they are the first to open as my extensions are hanging on by a thread 😂

Coffeepot72 · 01/05/2020 12:38

I will be camping outside my salon, the minute there's a sniff of re-opening. Having decent hair is a well-being issue.

HoldMyLobster · 01/05/2020 12:46

Phase 1 of reopening starts today where I am. Hairdressers are included in phase 1.

We’ve had a very low infection rate so far - will be watching it carefully to see the results.

Enchanted19 · 01/05/2020 12:49

@HoldMyLobster what area are you in? If you don't mind me asking 😊

Muskeg · 01/05/2020 12:51

I have shaved my hair off! Its great, so liberating. I do not care what it looks like as noone is going to see it for months! Grin I wont be going to a hairdressers until there is vaccine.

caramac04 · 01/05/2020 12:56

My daughter is a hairdresser and obvs her salon is closed. My hair is manageable but not great. It will get worse.
When salons finally open - and it’s likely to be quite some time - her plan is to open the salon for longer hours and the staff will work lates or earlies so only half the staff in at one time plus fewer customers in at any time.
It’s going to be difficult and air con will have to be switched off but front and back doors open should be positive as potentially any viral load will dissipate more quickly.

HoldMyLobster · 01/05/2020 13:59

HoldMyLobster what area are you in? If you don't mind me asking

I'm in the US - Maine. Opening up fairly slowly and carefully.

BlueBrian · 01/05/2020 14:49

Spoke to my hairdresser yesterday, and at the moment she has no idea how or when she's going to reopen, doesn't sound like it's going to be any time soon.
