When can hairdressers re-open?

They can limit customers so the chairs are spaced out.
Same person washes your hair as cuts it.
Anti bac their hands between customers.
Wear masks and limit chit chat.

I have a mobile hairdresser. She's emailed all her clients saying she is planning on starting up again towards the end of May.

I don't think she's being realistic and even if she does there's no way I want some one that close to me whose in contact with a lot of other people.

I imagine she's struggling for money, but still. I don't know if she's planning on wearing a mask, I would hope so , but it's not as if her clients can wear masks!

Daffodil55 · 24/04/2020 09:22

Glad I am not a salon owner! Same goes for nail/beauty/eyebrows and lash places. It isn't even as though they can safely transfer to mobile services and visit homes but I think some will be doing that and breaking all kinds of rules.

I have cut and coloured my own hair for years, plus my pretty nails are my own handiwork and I look gorgeous. I know that because I just looked in the mirror.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 24/04/2020 09:27

I paint my own nails too . I only went to a nail bar once and I wanted them sky blue for my DDs funeral .
I have just trimmed the fringe , for better or worse . Grin Will not attempt on length though.

SeriouslyRetro · 24/04/2020 09:37

I do think it’s rude when people have the ‘how vain are you? It’s only hair!’ Argument. People are allowed to express unhappiness and frustration.

Look at any cancer diagnosis thread, what’s the biggest concern for a lot of women? Losing their hair. Would you go on a cancer patients thread and give it the big ‘it’s only hair you vain stupid person!’?

vjg13 · 24/04/2020 09:38

I'd happily miss out the blow dry stage if that meant my roots could be done!

Itsjustmee · 24/04/2020 09:42

My friend has a nail bar
She is doing work on it at the moment
Each table is going to be in it’s own cubicle with a screen in front separating the nail technician and the client
The client will slide their hands between a gap at the bottom.

She is realistic that she might not open for a while but she wants to be prepared for when she can re open
No idea about hairdressers
My husbands been cutting his own hair and it looks no different

NigellasGuest · 24/04/2020 09:43

Desperate for a cut and colour here! My worry is that as soon as they are allowed to reopen, there will be a big rush and I wont be able to get an appointment for weeks!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 24/04/2020 09:45

I like your friends idea @Itsjustmee

I don't frequent nail bars as I have always painted my own and luckily have nice nails .

Itsjustmee · 24/04/2020 09:46

NigellasGuest
I’ve already told my hairdresser and beautician to book me in as soon as she opens
Don’t care what time or day it is 😂

DaisylovesDonald · 24/04/2020 09:47

Hairdressers seem to be listed regularly in other countries plans for opening up. I certainly hope it’s not 6 months, I will be making an appointment as soon as they’re open.

Flaxmeadow · 24/04/2020 09:54

Hairdressers will be one of the last to reopen. Too much close contact

I think they will only be able offer a quick dry cut.

No blow waves and no colour treatments or perms. They take too long

Itsjustmee · 24/04/2020 09:55

WhentheRabbitsWentWild

It was actually me who told her to do something like that 😂 I went to a place in Thailand last year and it was like that individual cubicles

She was panicking originally but wanted some advice on what might work from a clients point of view .
So we did a bit of brainstorming and came up with the idea of individual booths .
Her salon has 10 tables and two pedicure chairs

She plans to do the same with the chairs a screen separating them both and a screen at the bottom where your feet go that can be adjusted .

Her idea is that once she can work she will be ahead of everyone else and have a great selling point
It hasn’t cost much to do either although I can see the prices shooting up in the future if it takes off and other salons get the same idea

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 24/04/2020 09:58

@itsjustmee . Excellent .

My cousin is self employed (feet , reflexology) and DMs goddaughter is also . I like to support when I can If I lived near your friends nail bar I might make a second visit to one .

NigellasGuest · 24/04/2020 10:05

itsjustmee I did call the salon after lockdown with a view to going on list for appointment as soon as they open, but unfortunately just got a recorded message that they are shut and no opportunity to leave message. Times like this I wish I had my hairdressers home number. Actually, her mum works at the post office, now there's a thought. Might be able to get a cryptic message through!

ANoiseAnnoys · 24/04/2020 10:07

I have a mobile hairdresser who has (in my desperation!) given me step by step instructions on how to do my own roots, bless her. She gave me the link to the products she uses and I went on line and bought literally the last tube, it was like finding the holy grail - my finger has never moved so fast to the “buy it now” button!

Can’t wait for the stuff to arrive so I can banish the grey - I’m enlisting dd to do the back bit!

I’m also going to have to do something about ds’s hair soon but all I have is a pair of blunt kitchen scissors so will have to order some better ones - we will all be hairdressers at the end of this!

MrsWhites · 24/04/2020 10:12

I agree that lots of hairdressers, nail technicians etc will just go mobile in the hope that they don’t get caught it they can’t use their salons.

I think it will be interesting when they open up schools etc, how can it be safe for a child to be within 2 meters of a teacher but a hairdressers isn’t?

SunShine682 · 24/04/2020 10:13

I’m hoping nail bars open soon with a screen up like the idea above ^

Hairdressing salons may not open up but loads of hairdressers will go mobile and do appointments, the women I go to works from her home and I will be going as soon as she’s open.

PurpleDaisies · 24/04/2020 10:16

how can it be safe for a child to be within 2 meters of a teacher but a hairdressers isn’t?

I don’t spend that much time standing right next to each child, and I certainly don’t have any physical contact with them. It’s not even nearly a valid comparison.

BlueBrian · 24/04/2020 10:29

Well the DT reckons hairdressers could be one of the first businesses to reopen, however the DM says exactly the opposite, so basically neither of them has a clue and are just making stuff up.

When could hairdressers and salons re-open?
With hairdressers likely to be among the first wave of services and shops to re-open, here's what we know so far
www.telegraph.co.uk/beauty/hair/could-hairdressers-salons-re-open/

Hairdressers 'could stay closed for another SIX MONTHS' even if lockdown is lifted because experts can't find a way to re-open them without risking further spread of coronavirus

BluebellsareBlue · 24/04/2020 10:36

@MrsWhites thank you for thinking of us. My mum had her salon for 40 years until she passed from cancer 3 years ago. I took over (police officer - now retired) and have three staff. They are all part time. The furlough doesn't apply to them but I've taken out a loan to try and keep the rent and utilities paid and to give them 80% pay.... I can't do this for much longer, I will be out of business (and believe me I had to start from scratch as my dad was entitled to all cash from mums estate) so I occasionally get 20 or 30 quid a week 'pay'. The staff will be unemployed and I will fail my mum.

Flaxmeadow · 24/04/2020 10:44

No! Shock

Having individual booths I would have thought would make either the hairdresser or the client even more likely to catch the virus. It's a confined space!

Incidently. I know a hairdresser who ended up in hospital with the virus. She is back home now, thank goodness but she probably caught it at work

MrsWhites · 24/04/2020 10:47

@BluebellsareBlue it’s a horrible situation to be in for small business owners, people are very quick to state that things that aren’t necessarily important to them should remain closed, I understand that they see it in the best interests of protecting the vulnerable but they forget the economic fall out to both the country and the individuals running/working at those businesses!

I hope you get up and running again soon and I’m sure your mum is very proud of you continuing her business!

@PurpleDaisies I would have to disagree that it’s not a fair comparison, it’s virtually impossible to maintain a 2m distance from a child in early primary at all times. What about when children are injured, are teachers going to throw a first aid kit at them and tell them to get on with it?

backaftera2yearbreak · 24/04/2020 10:49

In some countries they have been the first to open and in some they will be the last. Bit of a guessing game for us just now really!

extremity1 · 24/04/2020 10:53

Hairdresser here on furlough. Sadly, I think we will be one of the first businesses to reopen as we were some of the last non-essential businesses to close. In some peoples opinion we are essential.

It's scary. The last two weeks of work before we closed were the worst weeks of my career. Not a single member of staff wanted to be there, clients were being ridiculous. (No one is forcing you to have an appointment) social distancing is impossible with clients and amongst the staff as well. Back room areas aren't very large at all. We also have to handle taking Bill's, answering phones etc. So everyone is in contact with everything and everyone. And trust me when I say we cleaned and sanitised everything. If a team member were to get the virus I'm positive that will create a cluster plus possible transmission to our households, not to mention clients households. I personally do not feel comfortable knowing that I could inadvertently pass this virus on to someone. And, potentially kill someone.

When we get recalled, it will be both a relief to be back in work but also terrifying. Getting PPE has been a nightmare for governments around the world I don't think our salon will be any different.

If you choose to see someone in the beauty industry please see us responsibility. If have ppe use it, if your vulnerable please dont come in, and please please if you have any symptoms dont come in. If we limit appointments please understand if we say we dont have anything available at the moment, Anger and abuse wont get you an appointment any sooner. And please thank your stylists. There's a good chance we wont want to be there.

I have huge respect for anyone on the frontline and having to work at the moment.Thank you.

Tigerbelle · 24/04/2020 10:53

What a joke..the government get hammered for not locking down early enough, the country pleads for people to STAY HOME and save lives and now people are desperate for hairdressers to reopen. Confused
