God I’m really struggling the past few days.

I just want to see some light at the end of the tunnel. It just feels like constant negative news and nothing about the near future.

It makes me so sad. How are other countries starting to go “back to normal”? But we aren’t?

Titsywoo · 22/04/2020 23:33

@JediJim We can’t compare this to a ww2 though. That lasted five years and people were getting their homes looted immediately after being bombed. It wasn’t all cheerful spirit.

Agreed - my grandfathers family home was destroyed in the Blitz and his sister killed - it was looted later than day. So sad.

"There are some countries with lockdowns that allow unlimited walking outside while keeping a distance. Maybe the UK could relax to that?"

I'm doing that anyway

Madein1995 · 23/04/2020 01:14

I fully blame the gov who shouldbr been quarantining people who arrived back in this country . Funding the nhs in the first place so they had equipment. Not taking beds up a a precaution when mr William's is told to wait til his lips turn ble. Not cancel emergency medical care. Not closing g takeaway cafes eg McDonald's. Following their own bloody advice

Saying it takes As long as it does is not acceptable. It shows they have fick all plan and are seemingly contact to lock us all n, and were behaving unreasonably for getting pissed off. It seems the lives of the 'few" outweigh the deaths and devastating cases by things like poverty, addiction, recession, mental health, cancer deaths a a result of this disease. Appealing to the older conservatives voter o imagins. Every death is sad but at some point a decision must be made around the economy

Nit no its bert the dog walkers fault
Or sandra bringing her kid from unil
Cant possibly Be the baffoon some idiots voted in. I absolutely hate the man. Decisions hes made halve killed 100 health care workers now.

And yes my mh is crap. I have to go to the office as equipment to wfh still hasnt been sent by it who are incompetent and frustrating
I have to ring service users and be all motivational and cheery ad 'have you tried x'.
I'm drinking at least a glass of wind a night Nd I had a relapse of tablets 2wks ago. Ig I could get hold f more I'd be carrying on.
I'm finding it hard to sleep. I'm more anxious and pissed off. And the view that thinking about the economy is selfish, that I should crack on and that lockdown will last whatever and I'm unreasonable asking gov a) for a concrete plan and to b)not to drag this shit heap out and ens it as soon as poss
Let the vulnerable shield and those that want to take their chances. I would quite happily have a little bit of risk for costa n way to work
Costa staff no more at risk than tesco and as I keep hearing 'they should be lucky they have a job

Anxious AF
Uncertain future doing my head in, it looks all bad.
Mum in Spain on her own. Losing marbles and now done something to face time so we can’t see each other, relying on mobile which she forgets how to use. Very concerned she’ll forget again. Needed FaceTime to show her how to use it.
Dh offloading fear of future on to me.
2 kids offloading teenage Crap onto me.
Really struggling.
Hate neighbour who happily declares he is busier than ever before.
Old packet of citalopram, wondering whether to start taking 1 a day.

twinnywinny14 · 23/04/2020 01:48

Make some laugh, those slagging off the people who stock piled all the pasta and toilet rolls as selfish for not considering other people, yet believe it’s ok to ignore advice and do as they please because they are fed up with lockdown, oh yes because it doesn’t matter if people get ill or die as long as I’m alright jack

YesThatIsMyRealName · 23/04/2020 03:00

"The people who have died in hospital did not die due to lack of money or care they died because there is no medical cure for CV"

It's not as simple as that though. People die because there are not enough beds and ventilators or through poor coordination (as in Lombardy when they tried to treat everyone or as in the UK where you're told not to come in unless you're blue in the face.)

TimeForChange123 · 23/04/2020 03:17

It will end. And restrictions should slowly begin to lift soon. When the NHS has unheard of numbers of empty acute beds like it does currently, it'll be a struggle to justify the current lockdown restrictions for much longer.

DressingGownofDoom · 23/04/2020 04:27

There will be an end, and soon. The economy will collapse if lockdown is extended.

PhilCornwall1 · 23/04/2020 05:25

Unfortunately if we are on lockdown we could be waiting several years for a vaccine. We will just have to get used to it. Better to stay at home for 5 years and survive right?

Stay home for 5 years? Err, no, because an awful lot of people will not have a home after a few months, let alone 5 years.

The country wouldn't accept this either and the shit would hit the fan. It's not far off that happening now I don't think.

PhilCornwall1 · 23/04/2020 05:35

yet believe it’s ok to ignore advice and do as they please because they are fed up with lockdown, oh yes because it doesn’t matter if people get ill or die as long as I’m alright jack

Well, that's life isn't it? Yes, I'm concerned for my family, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over someone I don't know getting it.

OneEndStreet · 23/04/2020 06:06

miss hoskins

Why are you blaming PHE for PPE shortages when they have no involvement in prucuring, purchasing or distributing that (or ventilators or other equipment)?

Lynda07 · 23/04/2020 06:17

JUST IN CASE YOU NEED IT EXPLAINED:
You wake up with a terrible cough, a fever, and severe body aches. Unfortunately, you’re diagnosed with COVID-19. For the last two weeks, you’ve been unaware that you were infected. For the last two weeks, you’ve sort of "followed the rules" but got together with a close friend for pizza, had a neighbor over, and visited some parks and beaches. You figured, “I don’t feel sick" and "I can't stop living my life!"

You spend a few days home on the couch sick, feeling pretty crappy, but then you’re well again because you’re young, healthy, and strong.
...But your neighbor caught it from you, and she brought groceries to her 82-year-old grandfather who uses oxygen tanks daily to help him breathe because he has COPD and heart failure. Now, he's dead.
...Your close friend who has asthma caught it during your little pizza get together. Now, he’s in the ICU.
...The cashier at the restaurant where you picked up the pizza carried the infection home to his wife who has MS, which makes her immuno-suppressed. She’s not as lucky as you, so she’s admitted to the hospital because she’s having trouble breathing.

#SocialDistancing = It’s not about you!
#ThisIsSerious Please, please stop!!!! We love and miss our family and friends, but we must recognize this is REAL!!!!

Copied from a friend. Feel free to do the same.

OneEndStreet · 23/04/2020 06:22

,I remember the Hong among flu in the late 60’s,I was a nurse in London,80,000 people died in the U.K.!!!!! I think it was around 30,000 rather than 80,000?

twinnywinny14 · 23/04/2020 06:53

@PhilCornwall1 you don’t need to lose sleep over it but you should be playing your part in reducing the spread by following the advice given, which in turn reduces the risk of your own family getting it too. Surely you would want others to do the same to protect your family?

TimeForChange123 · 23/04/2020 07:04

@Lynda 7 I cringe at those posts. And they don't make much sense either.

SnydeValley · 23/04/2020 07:04

@Lynda07 I don't think there is a soul alive in the UK over the age of 7 who doesn't understand that concept.

The truth is people understand, they are just more realistic that there is only so much you can do against a virus that has no cure and no treatment 🤷🏻‍♀️

And, if I'm being completely cold and completely honest... I don't think it's the hypothetical "you's" fault for having pizza with their friend. Like the post said, "you" and friend are young and healthy.

Now what went wrong is that the neighbour wasn't practicing good social distancing / handwashing / wearing of PPE with the high risk relative who uses oxygen tanks to breathe.

There is a weak link in that picture and it's not the young healthy person who shared a pizza and surprise, surprise, recovered from a virus that they have a less than 0.2% chance of dying from.

PhilCornwall1 · 23/04/2020 07:54

@twinnywinny14 We are pretty much sticking to the advice, but I'm not paying any attention or concerned about what others are doing, it's none of my business.

randomer · 23/04/2020 08:25

@Phil, sounds great advice.

Ilovemypantry · 23/04/2020 09:21

@Lynda07

Makes you think, reading that scenario. It really is that easy to pass the virus on to others.

0v9c99f9g9d939d9f9g9h8h · 23/04/2020 09:33

Phil

Do people in real life know you're like this. You're almost comically awful. I don't know any posters but I remember your incredibly nonchalant callousness from last week. It's clear you'd let large numbers die and shrug your shoulders. I'm genuinely curious. Where do you get your obnoxiousness from and do you just not have anyone vulnerable to care about? And don't tell me your just like everyone else and this is a normal outlook, I promise you stick out a mile. Have you always been like this?

goshdarnitjanet · 23/04/2020 09:44

I promise you stick out a mile.

I'm not sure he does - I think generally people who are following the rules are doing it for their families benefit and there will come a time that other things will be more important for their families than trying to protect people they don't know

SnydeValley · 23/04/2020 09:48

@goshdarnitjanet I completely agree. In fact the attitude on here of "save covid lives at any cost" is generally not something I experience much irl.

PhilCornwall1 · 23/04/2020 09:54

@0v9c99f9g9d939d9f9g9h8h

Where do you get your obnoxiousness from and do you just not have anyone vulnerable to care about?

Yes, I'm in the group that should shield and would more than likely end up dying if I get it, but I want to be out doing my job properly to keep a roof over my family's head and to put food on the table. You could argue that if I die I can't do that, but that side of things is more than taken care of and my family would be financially secure.

Yes, it's not nice that people are dying of this, but I'm afraid I cannot allow that to cloud my own judgment on providing for my family, they come first, last and in the middle as far as I'm concerned. I have heard from colleagues who are absolutely panicking and having sleepless nights thinking their job is going to go and it's not nice, not nice at all.

So this is why I think the country should start back up. If that makes me callous, I'll have to live with that.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 23/04/2020 10:00

there are ways out. It just needs time and planning. We need to follow the lead of countries that dealt with Sars and things like Ebola.

Nigeria mananaged to stop an outbreak of Ebola by
Fast and thorough tracing of all potential contacts
Ongoing monitoring of all of these contacts
Rapid isolation of potentially infectious contacts.

Big studies like the Kings symptom reporting app are helping to identify what they symptoms look like and in particular may be able to identify atypical symptoms (like loss of smell) - as soon as someone shows symptoms you test. If positive you implement the contact tracing. Etc etc.

It can be done, its just going to take resources, planning and time to put in place.
