God I’m really struggling the past few days.

I just want to see some light at the end of the tunnel. It just feels like constant negative news and nothing about the near future.

It makes me so sad. How are other countries starting to go “back to normal”? But we aren’t?

OP posts:

Then we expected them to behave like altruistic scientists. Now we're screwed until they can get their act together.

It's the scientists that are being asked to be scientists not Boris.

Coronabored · 22/04/2020 18:22

It's retail but a head office so not stores.

etopp · 22/04/2020 18:22

It can't go back to normal completely until either we develop the vaccine (which is looking hopeful) or everyone has had it and got over it

Some people will never get it. It's impossible for every single member of the population to have either had a vaccination or to have caught the virus.

Meanwhile, we need to try to restore some semblance of normality asap.

vera99 · 22/04/2020 18:22

Whilst social distancing will no doubt be relaxed shortly with conditions Whitty's comments mean that the vulnerable will have to be shielded for at least the rest of this year. Or those affected will choose to take their chances hopefully with informed choices.

Rebelwithallthecause · 22/04/2020 18:23

Both the company I work for and the company my DH works for are starting work again.
Mine went back to work last week and his will return Monday.

It really does depend on where you are and what’s happening there

pfrench · 22/04/2020 18:24

It's not going to go back to 'normal' though, is it. Let's be realistic.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/04/2020 18:25

I'm still having to work, sitting at home seems perfect right now.

Ilovemypantry · 22/04/2020 18:25

I get what you mean OP. Today’s daily briefing seemed very negative...no vaccine any time soon, another peak possible etc etc, it was all doom and gloom.
Every day I hope for some good, positive news but sadly it hasn’t appeared yet.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 22/04/2020 18:27

Cornwall's not going anywhere, Mummypig. Yes, it's a bit shit at the moment because there are so many unknowns but the way I see it is that every day we built up micro exposures to the virus and, because most of us are staying at home, we do this at safe levels. When we go out, we do so infrequently and follow the rules, therefore keeping our levels safe. We do, most people do and the virus doesn't mean death en bloc.

I query the figures that are quoted because they're snapshots extrapolated to make a point rather than raw data which gives the whole (massive) picture.

The way I see it is the 2020 is a bit of a 'lost year' but we'll still be able to do some things, slowwwwly at first. I don't know about Cornwall in July but, perhaps September might be possible? Or you'll go somewhere else beautiful?

Can you skype your Dad for now? To be honest, I've seen so many people flout the shopping-for-vulnerable-parent rule by picking up bread or milk and calling at parents, only to drop the food outside and wave madly, chatting through the window but, perhaps that's an option?

In the meantime, just find some things each day that make you happy, whatever they are. For me, it's get at least an hour of quiet time just for me - and get my exercise in every day, it makes me feel better and stops me putting weight on.

What do enjoy doing that you can still do?

kateandme · 22/04/2020 18:27

yes but all those saying we are behind other countires in timing.fuckinghell where we will be in a few weeks time then,we are already sky rocketing ahead in terms of deaths !

SabineSchmetterling · 22/04/2020 18:27

I think it’s easy to see headlines and think that other countries are going back to normal soon. That really isn’t the case. Some places are very gradually easing restrictions but nowhere is going back to normal yet. We are a few weeks behind places like Spain, but things will start to ease at some point here too. In some ways we have an advantage, because we can wait and see what impact the easing of restrictions has in other countries and see what works and what doesn’t before deciding what order to ease restrictions in here. In some ways those countries will act as guinea pigs for us. It makes sense for our experts to watch and see before deciding what to do here.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/04/2020 18:31

I think we need to be realistic that’s it’s entirely possible they can’t find a vaccine.

The whole world has the sequence code from CV. Everyone is trying to find something that works and doesn’t make things worse. In the UK we are really good at making vaccines. But there is the possibility that it might not work.

Potterspotter · 22/04/2020 18:31

we'll see easing or a plan for easing in 2 weeks - don't despair @Mummypig2020. Call me an optimist but with the money and effort that's being chucked at this, we'll see a vaccine by Autumn. We're in the dampening expectations phase where the talk is especially tough.

Ciwirocks · 22/04/2020 18:32

I don’t think things will even continue to move in the right direction. Loads of workplaces that were not strictly asked to close initially are opening up so more people mixing in the next week or so than have for the past 4 weeks. I just want to be able to see my family, I can cope with everything else, it’s that that’s really affecting me. Plus the stress of trying to educate your kids while working from home.

midgebabe · 22/04/2020 18:32

We are not skyrocketing ahead,

We are middle of the pack. Some have done better, some are doing worse.

This is a really good read about how getting people to wear a homemade facemask significantly stops spread. It's given me a lot of hope! It's worth a read.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/04/2020 18:33

I’m no Tory or Boris fan girl, but the PPE shortage has been worldwide.

I actually don’t think they’ve done that bad a job. We didn’t have the predicted awful scenes like Italy or Spain. We haven’t kicked off against lockdown like the Americans. Aside from the real frontline fight against this virus, the worst most of us have suffered has been some mild curtain twitching and posturing by power mad police.

burntpinky · 22/04/2020 18:34

I’m struggling too. Almost 12 weeks pregnant with terrible morning sickness and trying to wfh with a 19 month old and DH also wfh. Had a meltdown today as just can’t see an end to this any time soon. I miss my family, friends, colleagues and the divide between work and gone. It’s all very well people saying make the most of this time at home with your kids but I don’t find it at all enjoyable as I have to work (and also worried for my job security). I much prefer being focused on work at work and home at home and at present just feel like neither is getting 100% of me and then I’ve also no time for myself to relax

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/04/2020 18:37

Fucks sake, grow up people. This is currently life.

JediJim · 22/04/2020 18:38

The daily briefing wasn’t giving much positive news.
I saw the ITV news and it seems that many more people will die as a result of this pandemic, other illnesses not connected to it. Cancer and other illnesses.
Very depressing.
I think people will be well and truly miserable by next month.

kate we are peaking now. New infection rates are steady. Death rates for this week were initially predicted to be in the thousands but they're not.

MargotB7 · 22/04/2020 18:40

TopBitchoftheWitches

What is wrong with you? Stop being a twat.

My post was positive and I was just trying to help someone who is struggling.

PilatesPeach · 22/04/2020 18:40

I wondered if the CMO was talking more frankly today because some people seem to be unwilling to go out or resume work until there is a vaccine. Lockdown was never meant to be until a vaccine but I do hear amongst my acquaintances that they are unwilling to resume work (which they can't do at home) until there is a vaccine! Perhaps CMO was emphasising the fact that things will re-open, including schools, there will still be a risk but the idea is to get the risk lower than 1 as a bare minimum. I didn't feel I learned anything new today from the briefing though.

Potterspotter · 22/04/2020 18:40

I don't think anything can be suppressed easily with twitter/youtube/facebook etc - it does look like the hospitals have coped, outside of the too high number of NHS staff that have caught coronavirus and died.
