God I’m really struggling the past few days.

I just want to see some light at the end of the tunnel. It just feels like constant negative news and nothing about the near future.

It makes me so sad. How are other countries starting to go “back to normal”? But we aren’t?

I think part of it is getting your enjoyment in little things at the moment. We can't travel so there's no point in getting disappointed about it - that'll come back though.

We're very lucky, we have a garden that overlooks trees. I never sit out in the sun that much usually. I work five days a week so the weekends are spent getting the housework done between us, shopping, helping with the homework that always seems to get given on Friday for handing in on Monday, and all the other 'stuff' that we all have to do. Everything is rushed.

I now sit in the garden every evening when it's fine. I make myself do it. Sit down, enjoy the view, have a cuppa. It's not a case of counting my blessings (although I do), it's just that I've got time to do all the housework - it's not going anywhere. This lovely weather might though. I'm hoping I'm beginning to realise that sometimes just stopping and enjoying what you can NOW is more important than a sparkling work surface all the time. A time and place for everything.

I also enjoy my DS snuggling up for a cuddle every evening. He's staying up a little later so we're being more careful about what we watch - gentler programmes, documentaries, travel programmes instead of the more gritty programmes. Which helps me sleep better funnily enough.

I'm enjoying him coming up to DH and I when he gets up and spending time having a cuddle. He seems to need that more at the moment and I'm not arguing. Love a cuddle with my boy!

And eating chocolate without giving a toss. It's a pandemic, I need a bit of enjoyment. We, as a family, do a Joe Wicks PE class everyday - falling about with laughter so I earn my piece of Galaxy! Or cake! Or crisps!

This will all end eventually. I want to have good memories along with the, possibly, not so good.

And I daydream...Disneyworld Florida, South West of England, Highlands of Scotland - all waiting for me when this is over. So I plan my trips. There are loads of programmes on Play Again or clips on YouTube of different countries and areas of the UK to whet your appetite!

I've also started a 'wish jar' - I saw it on Facebook. It's a simple idea. Every time some says 'I wish I could still do' something, they write it down and pop it in the jar. So far we've got 'have an Indian takeaway', walk along the beach, have the family over, have friends over to chat (DS), go and buy some plants, go into London, go to the cinema and go to the theatre. When this is over we're working our way through the jar....

I felt utter despair a few weeks ago when Italy was spiralling, but seeing other countries some semblance of normality gives me hope.

That said, the second poster hits the nail on the head. If we'd had competent leadership it may have been less painful.

lljkk · 22/04/2020 19:08

Won't feel like normal until the kids go back to school in a normal way.

CokeEnStock · 22/04/2020 19:08

Belgium are counting suspected deaths outside hospital though. Every single day. 51% of deaths have been in care homes. It's not that it's worse in Belgium.

middleager · 22/04/2020 19:09

I was meticulous at the start - I didn't even leave my house. The idea of a takeaway was unheard of.

I've slacked off in part. It was my children's birthdays yesterday, we had a takeaway, their friend dropped off a present at the top of the drive and we spoke to another human being in person for the first time in weeks.

Make sure you are getting some joy OP. I denied myself the pleasure of walking as I have been trying to protect others by not leaving my house at all , but the cost was too high.

Humphriescushion · 22/04/2020 19:09

Venus, that table is not correct for France, France has 13,000 hospital deaths, that is the total deaths. So the uk has 17,000 hospital and france 13,000. I know this is not clear from this but the uk ahead of france. I know i keep banging on about this but it is very misleading.

Selmaselma · 22/04/2020 19:11

Direct comparison of countries

I can’t see an end to this.. 😔
Humphriescushion · 22/04/2020 19:11

Exacly @CokeEnStock france, belguim and ireland count care home deaths so seem higher.

Selmaselma · 22/04/2020 19:12

(and that graph is without care home deaths for the UK)

OneandTwenty · 22/04/2020 19:12

Our medical system is so much worst than other countries, we lack funding, resources, staff at the very best of time.

other countries might manage better, we are in a terrible position. It's crazy to wish for everything to reopen too early. Give it time.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 22/04/2020 19:14

People are very naive if they think all countries are struggling in the same way the UK is. Or that all countries are struggling to source PPE or masks.

It is not the case across much of Asia. Or even Europe.

UK citizens should be angry at the government. Not just shrugging their shoulders and saying "well it is just as bad everywhere else."

Vietnam has had no deaths. Korea and Taiwan very few in comparison to Europe. Singapore has had an upswing but mainly because they are now testing everybody.

There are tests. There is PPE. The British government was just too slow to source them, despite it being one of the last countries to be affected and having plenty of time to do something.

I saw someone saying that it will be worse in Africa than the UK. Is that really our standard these days? Not being as badly hit as a continent with some of the poorest countries on earth?

This is not to piss on anyone's chips but please do not assume that the government did their best. They had plenty of time and the UK has plenty of money. They just chose to do nothing.

We should be extremely angry.

Kljnmw3459 · 22/04/2020 19:15

We'll soon start seeing some easing of the lockdown just like in other countries.

Humphriescushion · 22/04/2020 19:16

@Selmaselma sorry i cant see the graph. Is it just me?( probably my ipad) i would really like to see that.

alreadytaken · 22/04/2020 19:17

0v9c99f9g9d939d9f9g9h8h was right and that is not running the country down it's recognising our government did too little too late.

However - the number of beds occupied by those with Covid-19 is declining, the deaths in hospital are starting to drop too.

There is a drug that is looking promising.

Vaccines are being trialed, several different ones. There is a big financial incentive to develop one, I think it will happen and if we get lucky later this year.

Businesses are returning to work, more than you might think. I expect the south west, which has had a relatively low number of cases, to be allowed to take some tourists this summer.

All this MAY lead to another lockdown later. A lot depends on how much social distancing we all keep to. Personally I wont be going to any large events.

Sheeeeesh · 22/04/2020 19:18

AvalancheKit I like your postSmile

Selmaselma · 22/04/2020 19:19

@Humphriescushion: Sorry for that. I don't know how to fix that but you can find it here: www.ft.com/coronavirus-latest

Cam77 · 22/04/2020 19:20

41,000 deaths in the UK according to Financial Times report, which makes us second to worst in the entire world, taking population into account, just behind Belgium. (Unlike us, other countries such as France include all deaths in their figures, not just those in hospital). Aren’t Boris Johnson and the Tories doing a great job.

tinkerbellla · 22/04/2020 19:21

There's a really good feature in this week's Grazia with three of the women developing vaccines and researching immunity to the virus. It made me feel so much better so maybe grab it if you can. One of them says that the work they are doing 'couldn't be going any better'. Gave me a bit of hope anyway! Smile

Confusedasusual78 · 22/04/2020 19:22

@Costacoffeeplease Portugal here too. Have to say I think it’s a bit too soon and am nervous, but my other half has to return to work soon or we’ll have no money.

Selmaselma · 22/04/2020 19:23

But still, Whitty says that a vaccine is realistically not happening in 2020. So while it is great to hear that there are so many efforts on vaccines, another solution is needed for until the end of the year.

notalwaysalondoner · 22/04/2020 19:24

Suggest you minimise exposure to news and social media - I found when I watch the tv news I get much more anxious and angry. I try not to read anything about it beyond a quick browse of the bbc website a couple of times a day for maybe 5-10 minutes. It really helps not seeing live broadcast news but just reading news as well in terms of anxiety. It’s not like watching/consuming more media will change the outcome, and avoiding it helps you live in the moment more.

Humphriescushion · 22/04/2020 19:25

Thanks @Selmaselma, yes that graph is muchclearer and transparent.thanks.

Custardcreamies101 · 22/04/2020 19:30

@kateandme

Seriously? It’s so that there is enough staff, equipment such as ventilators, beds etc are available. If we all get it at once there won’t be enough resources to treat everyone resulting in more death. If we flatten the curve then when people do get the virus they will have enough resources to treat people and more manageable!

jasjas1973 · 22/04/2020 19:32

@AvalancheKit
If we are war, maybe you should ask your hero's why they allowed millions of pieces of PPE to be sent to europe from the UK? when our medics are crying and dying for the stuff????

Or why we have some of the worst testing & tracing rates of any euro country.

You appear to the one who is suggesting doing nothing, which is what our Govt did for the first 2 1/2 months.

Even with Plasma blood therapy, we are among the last to authorise trials, despite one of the worlds top Plasma scientists working here

Some "War" eh!

We need to learn and so far, we are not doing that, there won't be a vaccine for 2 or possibly 3 years, not because no one will invent one but because we need to wait and see if it is safe and that cannot be rushed.

this disease will only be beaten by following public health scientists and throwing every resource at international co-op on treatments and vaccines... but we are going it alone... yet again.
