Scared for the USA

In case you've not seen the news mass gatherings in some states trying to get the governess to lift lock down . Not only are these people idiots they are armed idiots and it's only going to be so long before they start using them. I'm scare for the sane people there as it's looking to be like there will be a descent into lawlessness before much longer .

Please tell me I'm being a pessimist.

OP posts:
ThePawtriarchy · 18/04/2020 02:28

*clear not clever

bettythebutterfly · 18/04/2020 02:41

I live in one of those states that Trump wants to 'liberate'.

We're doing just fine, thanks.

And thank goodness we have someone who knows what they're doing (and who listens to experts) who is actually in charge.

mathanxiety · 18/04/2020 02:42

I sincerely hope karma will bite Trump hard in the butt this November.

However, if the race is decided one way or the other by the Electoral College as happened last time, I suspect there will be a rupture of the Union.

OutOntheTilez · 18/04/2020 02:42

@ThePawtriarchy

Might that be Inslee in Washington state, by chance?

amber763 · 18/04/2020 02:48

Sorry but when Americans use the constitution to justify shit like this my eyes roll right right out of my head across the floor. It's like with the guns. These idiots don't give a single fuck that people will die.... cause the constitution.

mathanxiety · 18/04/2020 02:52

Doing ok here- the governor is more popular now than when he was first elected. The mayor of the local major city has just about managed to keep the virus from overwhelming hospitals thanks to a very in your face / images.app.goo.gl/2CTtdGsMbbpQ2Hrz6 stance that was resented at first but is now earning her praise.

EarlLeighIndamornin · 18/04/2020 04:19

Sick of this anti American bullshit on here.

I’m a Brit living in NY and things are not descending into chaos. They’re just not.

Tomasinaa · 18/04/2020 04:39

Agree Earl Leigh. It's every few days someone whos clearly not living here and everyone jumps on. I happen to be in a southern red state and it's perfectly fine and normal here. There's no chance of a 2nd civil war ffs!

user764329056 · 18/04/2020 05:08

And it’s widely reported there has been ‘panic buying’ of firearms and ammo since COVID - because of course that’s the answer

AnnUumellemahaye · 18/04/2020 06:05

I will never understand how so many people can have been fooled by this conman

If you want to understand how the USA ended up with Trump as president, watch the Tiger King on Netflix.

Suddenly it will all make sense.

AnnUumellemahaye · 18/04/2020 06:09

Sick of this anti American bullshit on here.

There is another thread running about how Britain is perceived as falling apart by the rest of the world and some of the comments on it are laughable. The Britain the think they see from afar is certainly not like anything I recognise. People see a politically motivated and totally biased meme or tweet and suddenly it’s evidence of absolute truth. I feel your pain.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 18/04/2020 06:12

@EarlLeighIndamornin the news must make it look like there is nothing but chaos here. A couple rallys in a country as big as America is nothing. I'm American and my Governor is doing a great job. Trump talks a lot but he has little power when it comes to things like this. Yes he should have helped more with providing testing, ventilators, PPE, etc but most Governors are doing an amazing job to protect their citizens. There are a handful of states that I worry about, their Governors seem to have their heads in the sand and it's going to bite them hard. South Dakota, I feel really bad for them.

Batshitmeansbatshit · 18/04/2020 07:01

@ToffeeYoghurt
While you are right to be concerned about our U.K. figures, the figures in the US are horrifying for some States. It is averaging out the numbers across the country which is masking this at first glance.

www.statista.com/statistics/1109011/coronavirus-covid19-death-rates-us-by-state/

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

The statista figure is per hundred thousand and the worldometer per million.

New York State has a population of almost 20 million and New Jersey around 12 .
The Netherlands has 19 million and Greece and Belgium 11 million.

middleager · 18/04/2020 07:04

Bookmarked that post derigeur

OP the situation is terrifying.

Breckenridged · 18/04/2020 07:08

I’m worried about the UK and the US! Leadership has been and continues to be very poor in both places.

I have a lot of family in NY and those in NYC are terrified. I have 3 family members (upstate) in hospital.

But at least hospitals are accessible there. I absolutely agree with the PP up thread that the shit will really hit the fan when this takes off in the southern states. There are entire counties with one doctor. How do you think they will fare? (The New Yorker has already been covering this re Georgia and it’s interesting and grim reading.)

Egghead68 · 18/04/2020 07:20

I’m more worried about the U.K.

Trump does not seem quite right cognitively but at least he doesn’t have the power to make all the decisions here.

notsureneversure · 18/04/2020 07:32

The Netherlands has 19 million

17 million.

JudyCoolibar · 18/04/2020 07:36

America has a far lower death rate per million population than the UK.

But you aren't comparing like to like. A better comparison is New York to London: similarly densely populated, busy towns with populations that normally commute every day etc. London has slightly larger population numbers. New York has had over 17K deaths, London has had 3.5K.

Alialialiali · 18/04/2020 07:44

America is the greatest country on the planet, who are you to criticise

Grin
LastTrainEast · 18/04/2020 07:52

America's stupid people may be even louder and more obnoxious than our stupid people. Not too worried about armed revolution though I expect one of them will shoot a friend, family member or their foot at some point.

Overweight, middle aged shopkeepers and insurance salesmen wearing ammunition belts and dreaming of being freedom fighters. They reminded me of Dad's Army.

Trump's the bigger problem, but we've been assured that his carers staff are keeping a close eye on him and won't let him do anything too dangerous.

LastTrainEast · 18/04/2020 07:55

"The protesters are exercising their rights guaranteed in the American constitution"

LastTrainEast · 18/04/2020 07:57

should read "The protesters are protecting the rights of the gun manufacturers to make a profit guaranteed in the American constitution"

Breckenridged · 18/04/2020 07:57

JudyCoolibar The population of NYC is about twice that of London. NYC still has a much higher proportion of deaths but London is not more populous.

Prairi3Fire · 18/04/2020 07:58

London is much bigger than New York, New York is far more crowded.

Prairi3Fire · 18/04/2020 08:00

As of 2013, London and NYC had comparable populations. London's stood at 8.3 million, while NYC stood at 8.4 million. London, however, has much more room for its inhabitants — it's 138 square miles bigger than NYC. So it's pretty safe to say that New York is way more crowded than London.
