To think the amount of people we know who have died or are dying from CV is proportionately high?

Between DP and I, we know 3 people who have died and one who is very likely to due in the next 24 hours from/with Covid-19. We live in Yorkshire.

My old hairdresser who was 38 Sad DP's workmates husband who was a 60 year old GP (she is a nurse) and my workmates Mum who was in her 80's and lived in a care home but was very well on mothers day. My sisters FIL has early onset alzheimer's and is 58, currently in hospital but they had to complete a DNR for him this morning and they are refusing to admit him to critical care or for ventilation.

DP thinks this is probably an average amount that most people will see in this pandemic (he is frontline NHS so quite fatalistic) whereas I didn't think we would know this many people who would die, in what is essentially a month long period.

AIBU to think this is quite high or are you all seeing similar? It is very much adding to my long list of worries.

My DM had it, DF may have it he won't be tested unless he has 2 symptoms. My SIL's uncle died from it, my friends DM died from it. It is widespread in Dublin.
My friend/colleague took his life because of the isolation. A local lady died from a heart attack after chest pains for days she was to fearful of the infection in hospital.
It is very dark times, the impacts ripple effects will have a much higher death toll.

DeeCeeCherry · 17/04/2020 01:03

A friend of a friend died from Covid. He was severely asthmatic. I don't know anybody else who has/had it

BlackeyedSusan · 17/04/2020 01:26

I know of two people who have died... Ie known to people I know.

thecatneuterer · 17/04/2020 04:13

There are nearly 66 million people in the Uk and approx 100,000 cases of coronavirus, with a total of 13,700 deaths.

That 100,000 figure can't possibly be true. Is that the figure for those that have been tested? Another thread was looking at stats and some posters concluded that there were probably around 1.5 million cases (either currently or recovered) in the UK which hadn't resulted in hospital admission and so which weren't tested. That seems much more likely.

ittakes2 · 17/04/2020 04:23

I am sorry about your losses and your sister’s f’n’law. It does sound like you know more than most. My f’n’law’s dementia care home are experiencing something similar to what your sister’s f’n’law has gone through - all patients taken to hospital were not treated and sent back. GPs won’t enter carehomes and the staff do their best but in reality it seems that this vulnerable group of people are being denied proper medical care to save resources for other groups of people. I read an article recently about how the mark of a civilised society is how well we treat the vulnerable - I am not sure what this says about the UK at the moment but it’s very sad.

maa1992 · 17/04/2020 04:32

My FIL is recovering in hospital from it, my SIL is a nurse and tested positive and is self isolating with the only symptom being no smell

ClareVH · 17/04/2020 04:32

A friend of a friend is a member of the local church. After the churches were shut down, they decided to have their own illegal congregation. Sadly, now 20 of them have COVID-19.

Reginabambina · 17/04/2020 04:37

I know one person with a positive test result. A several who have had a mild illness that they suspect might be CV. I don’t (to my knowledge anyway) know anyone who has been hospitalised or died from it. Obviously we may have acquaintances who have died but we are unaware what with normal funerals being banned.

SunshineInMySprocket · 17/04/2020 05:04

We know 2 people who have died from Covid-19 and a parent at our children’s school has also sadly died. All 3 people we know were in the UK at the time but we live abroad.

Duckingell · 17/04/2020 08:09

I don't know anyone who has died or been confirmed as having the virus.

I am pretty sure DS had it about 4 weeks ago. Temperature, chills, fatigue. Lost his senses of taste and smell. I also suspect I had an extremely mild case. Headache for two weeks, couldn't shift it. Very tired.? Nothing for DH.

West Yorkshire.

Fluffybutter · 17/04/2020 08:11

Someone on our extended family (sil’s niece) died 2 weeks ago at the age of 29 .
I really hope that’s the only person I know who’s had it

cosytoaster · 17/04/2020 08:16

Absolute selfish bloody idiots

crankysaurus · 17/04/2020 08:21

A friend's old dad and a colleague's not so old dad plus four friends or colleagues who had had it quite severely. A friend in the NHS has lost two colleagues too.

Newbie1999 · 17/04/2020 08:24

I know a few people who have had it, and 2 who have died. Central London.

DCIRozHuntley · 17/04/2020 08:38

I don't "know" anyone with confirmed Covid-19 but I know of quite a few. One of DH's friends and his partner have had it down in London. My good friend's FIL who I met a few times has sadly died. A colleague's dad is recovering. Another colleague's DH currently has it and needed stabilising in hospital, though is home now. A neighbour is in hospital on a ventilator. My granny knows a couple who have died but I don't think I ever met them.

I do think DH and DD had it but it's never been confirmed.

It's interesting to see the (regional?) differences in what we class as knowing people. I have hundreds of acquaintances as I've lived in the same place all my life, I'm a member of several groups and I have 4DC two of whom are school age. I have met many of my grandma's friends and speak about them often as she is very active at church and in the community. I'm bound to know of a fair few. Smile

catfeets · 17/04/2020 08:40

I'm in Yorkshire too. I don't personally know anyone with it or who has died but at my dad's work, there are several currently in hospital with it and a couple who have died. My dad still has to work so has been in contact with these people and I'm worried for him. My stepmum works for the nhs and is keeping very quiet about how many cases they have.
My MIL works with someone who caught it from a friend who had been to Italy (right at the beginning of it kicking off in the UK). She had to self isolate and was ill but doesn't know if she actually had it or not.
My DP is an emergency services worker and someone has had it at work but luckily no one caught it from him. He was very ill but is fine now.

I worry mainly because my local hospital has a terrible record with Coronavirus patients (at least 75% don't survive) and a terrible record in general. I almost died there myself a couple of months ago and they put my baby's life at risk too.
My baby was admitted again just before lockdown and they were laughing about this all being ridiculous and it was just flu. The lack of hygiene in that place was unbelievable and I can't imagine it's suddenly become amazing in the last few weeks.

minsmum · 17/04/2020 08:52

Outer London borough and while I thought the numbers you mentioned seemed high I started to think about who I know that has had it.
My friends mum has died with it, another friend her brother in law died and her sister has it, my bosses partner is in hospital with it. A colleague has it, my sister in laws friend had it and a work colleague of my husband has had it. A close colleague her young son had it.

That is just the people I have been in contact with recently there are probably more I don't know about yet so your numbers are not as high as I thought

leckford · 17/04/2020 08:56

The only 2 people I know who have had it are my brother, who worked at the Cheltenham racing, and his partner. Both are fine now. A couple of people in our small village have had it, one was a care worker the other their parent. Both now OK

Rural area not many people, elderly being careful

EmeraldShamrock · 17/04/2020 09:35

The number of infected cases seems low against the population in the UK.
Let us hope it stays low. My DM had no symptoms at all she tested positive in a&e she was there for an unrelated issue she had a blocked nose.
She has stage 4 COPD, heart diseases, fibromyalgia we would have never known she was infected if she hadn't went to a&e.
I'd say loads are carrier's.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 17/04/2020 09:37

That's awful. A friend of a friend died but I don't even know anyone personally who has had it.

Baaaahhhhh · 17/04/2020 09:50

Gosh, we seem to be in minority. No-one we know has died. We know of three definitel confirmed Covid, all recovered, and a few possible, inc. DD who came home from London and was ill for two weeks. All fine.

DH and all colleagues where flying in and out of London up to lockdown, and no-one got ill. Also lots of family in Emilia Romagna and no-one ill there either.

As I say, we seem to be very lucky.

amicissimma · 17/04/2020 09:57

I don't know, or know of, anyone who has died of it, either locally or among my friends in London. I find that surprising as I volunteer (or did, pre CV) with the elderly, so I know a disproportionate number of over 70s. I also know a lot of HCPs.

I know about 7 people who sound as if they have had it, although none have been tested. Of those 4 (age 20s, 50s, 70s and 80s) reported being very, very ill, but not needing hospitalisation, and the other 3 were unwell, but not hugely so. It does seem to take a while to recover from. Of the people who've had it, none of their partners showed any symptoms, even those who were nursing the patient more than advised.

Cb2018 · 17/04/2020 10:49

My close friends father passed away last week of the virus. 57 and no underlying health issues. My dads old school friend too. He was 64, not sure if he had any underlying issues. My aunts ex husband also, early 60’s.

2 of my cousins have had it. On different sides of the family. One of them works at a GP’s office and 2 of the doctors tested positive too.
We are in London.

Cb2018 · 17/04/2020 10:51

And a friends aunt had it, she was on CCU on a ventilator but she is doing really well now

Sarahandco · 17/04/2020 11:03

I know one person in their 30s who died
