Multiple people out in the car

Hi. Am I being OTT?

What would the possible need be for 2/3/4 people to go out in the same car?

I thought adults were supposed to be doing the essential shopping alone (unless you're a single parent).

I just keep thinking if there was an accident the more people that are injured the more pressure it will put on the NHS.

I've seen posts on here where families have driven to see grandparents but stood on the drive or families have dropped off easter eggs.

Am I being a tad ridiculous?

They could be key workers who are also part of the same household or they could be doing an essential medical trip for example.

Just before the lockdown, we were told by the nursing staff to fetch my mum from her convalescent home and bring her home. Until mum had her operation and needed we'd been part of the same household and were going to be again.

I can't carry mum (she's considerably taller and heavier than me) and dad can't drive so on the way back, there were three adults in the car. That journey would still be allowed.

You are being OTT to concern yourself tbh. There are so many threads like this and I can't help but wonder how unhappy people must be to take time out of their day to post on Mumsnet about what they have seen. Surely you just think 'idiots' and carry on with your day? It's not healthy to get wind up about what other people are doing.

Yes a little, the chances of an accident are small, and they are in a car so risks to others are non existent.

The vast majority of people are not going anywhere.

&Potteringabout - is your comment aimed at me? The circumstances I've described are with the reasonable excuse set out in Regulation 6(2) (d) of the regulations.

All the reasonable excuses are listed, the op could read them if she wants to consider possible reasons why a number of people might be out.

Technically you aren't allowed to be going out with several of you why would you need to. Possibly one adult with kids if single parent or other parent at work etc. However I have seen plenty of families in cars.

Yesterday I took the baby a walk and there were lots of cars parked around the pavements and folk standing talking in gardens or at windows chatting. I also heard what sounded like a bit of a gathering and lots of cars outside. I think over Easter lots of folk have been doing this to see family or drop Easter gifts.

We wanted to go round to parents with an Easter card that my little girl made and pick up her Easter gift but I was too scared for us all to go in case we were stopped by the police. I don't actually see the harm in this but you aren't supposed to. Even though we only speak through the window. It's such a shame as we have a 4 month old baby and they haven't seen her for over a month and one of them is terminally ill.

Ah, you'll be one of the many people that glowered at us going out this morning! There are plenty of reasons, but ours is that my daughter has horses on DIY livery, the yard is set up for social distancing from some time ago before lockdown(one of the horse owners is NHS, so she only comes in the morning before work),. Currently we are covering for a few people on isolation so whereas normally daughter would take herself off, I'm going too because we can muck out more horses between us.

I know a couple who go together in the car to the supermarket, she can't drive and he can't shop without forgetting something, and she has done her shoulder in so he waits in the car and helps load the bags into the boot.

Think you're being a little OTT. You don't know the reasons they are all out in a car. For example tomorrow I have a medical appointment but I don't drive so my husband will be driving and we will have our 5 and 7 year olds in the car as obviously can't leave them alone. Once medical appointment is done we will be driving to the supermarket where I will go in and do the food shop and hubby will stay in the car with our kids.

When I went to work yesterday from leaving the house, through the streets, to driving 7 miles on a main road I saw 3 cars. Chances of an accident are pretty slim!

Me and dp go to the supermarket together.

The shopping in our nearest supermarket ended up with me having a panic attack. He only drives a motorbike so cant bring much back. Which would mean going more often.

So I drive and he goes in. We also dont go to our nearest anymore. It seems the most local one to me, is frequented by customers who dont give a shit about social distancing. After a few incidents, we wont go back to that one. The one I have been to the last 2 times have been far better at enforcing distancing.

Members of the same household are allowed to be out together. Only certain shops have restricted how many people from the same household can enter.

I wish people would stop making up their own rules over and above the guidelines that already exist.

Two people could be understandable but OP said multiple. I agree OP, multiple people is a bit suspect. Many people are making up their own version of the rules, where they don't consider they apply to them.

Dd is working in a shop a few miles away but as she is under 17 she can't drive.

Dropping essential supplies off (with a baby who would legit be with you at 4 months old) while maintaining social distancing would be fine I think Shelby. If a wee Easter card found its way into the bag, fine also.

There looks to be just as much over interpretation of the rules as under interpretation. DH, DD (9), and I were all in the car together yesterday for a 10 minute journey for horse care reasons similar to the PP upthread.

We have all been given the same guidance, and on the whole, unless we know the facts relating to somebody contravening the guidance, then we should probably assume that most others are also complying.

I was “confronted” on Saturday whilst picking up a click and collect order from Sainsbury’s and I had my 14yo ds with me. A lady was most indignant that we were breaking the rules and it doesn’t take two to collect shopping. I told her, in the nicest possible way, to piss off! I’m physically disabled and very slow on my feet, we were collecting 4 households full of shopping, and ds was with me purely for a bit of lifting power as it would’ve taken me all day on my own to bag it up and get it in the car, plus he was doing the lifting and dropping when we delivered all the shopping on the way home.

You have no idea of people’s reasons or circumstances.

On Friday my dad, sister and me (all from different houses) will all be in my car. The reason for this terrible crime?....I shall be driving us to Mums funeral because we can't have a car supplied by the funeral directors. I hope we don't get reported by someone who will just see 3 people in a car without knowing the context of the journey.
