*some posters who have clearly lost an argument and can’t deal with it always resort to ‘you must be thick’ or ‘you have learning difficulties’ ?

Where has that been said? I can't find it.

mochojoes · 13/04/2020 00:41

Saying that it's hard to compare countries like for like doesn't mean our gov hasn't made mistakes. I'm just not sure how helpful it is whilst we are still very much in the thick of this pandemic. I also think unfortunately we ie the public needed to see the scary photos & death counts from Italy in order to grasp the seriousness of the situation. The public have to want & believe in a lockdown for it to work as you can't really "force" 66m to do it.

ElspethFlashman · 13/04/2020 00:42

I would guess the UK also has a lot more people over 65

Proportionally it's about the same. In the UK it's about 18% of the population, but in Ireland it's about 19%.

And remember, Ireland counts nursing home deaths, the UK seems to be hesitant at best about counting those. So I would propose that the stats for the over 65s in the UK is inaccurate anyway.

Iamthewombat · 13/04/2020 00:42

Wombat I'm assuming you have learning difficulties
I DIDNT KNOW WHAT IT WAS AT THE TIME AS SOON AS I KNEW I PROBABLY HAD IT I SELF ISOLATED AND AM STILL CURRENTLY IN MY NIGHTWEAR hope that helps

Here you go, Starlight. From the previous page, with bonus shouting.

starlightgazers · 13/04/2020 00:42

I've effectively fucked half the population

Confused
SandAndSea · 13/04/2020 00:44

I don't think we can know how badly we're affected from the figures.

From what I've heard and read, Doctors have recently been told to 'diagnose' C19 on the basis of the patient's own reported symptoms, often without even examining them. If they then die, it's reported as being due to C19 and there's no post mortem. From what I understand, an elderly person could die at home from a fall or heart failure and it's being counted in the C19 mortality stats. This is obviously going to inflate the figures considerably.

starlightgazers · 13/04/2020 00:46

@Iamthewombat - disgusting comment, I've reported it. No need.

Random18 · 13/04/2020 00:48

It seems we are all wrong for pointing out that someone who had a cough on 19th March should have been self isolating before the 21st March.

starlightgazers · 13/04/2020 00:49

I keep hearing this sort of thing but you are wrong. Someone would have to have had symptoms prior to death for COVID-19 to be named on the death certificate.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 13/04/2020 00:50

Random have we closed our borders? Did we enforce quarantine for people coming in to the UK? Have we followed contact tracing? Or extensive testing? NZ did. Germany did some of them.
Your 'examples' would be managed within those policies. But you know that so I don't understand why you're pretending otherwise.
Chien yy I agree it's contemptible. I hope enough people see through it. As more people are affected, they might find it harder to continue turning a blind eye to facts and figures.

mochojoes · 13/04/2020 00:52

Proportionally it's about the same. In the UK it's about 18% of the population, but in Ireland it's about 19%.

But 19% of 4.9m is a lot less than 18% of 66m & according to Google Ireland has the youngest population in Europe. What about BAMe stats?

starlightgazers · 13/04/2020 00:54

Also - it is hardly rocket science to assume COVID19 if a person reports a new cough and temperature etc.during a pandemic where a highly infectious virus is involved.

mochojoes · 13/04/2020 00:54

also I said upthread that a relative of mine died recently in a home. Tested but no sign of virus however death certificate says probable cause Covid 19.

mochojoes · 13/04/2020 00:57

@starlightgazers my relative didn't have any symptoms & a negative test but covid is on the death certificate. They had late stage dementia & starting to struggle eating so wouldn't have carried on for much longer anyway.

TheCanterburyWhales · 13/04/2020 01:00

Well, she wasn't isolating on the 22/3 either because she's on a thread saying her supermarket had wine and milk.

Bad form I know. But...

Night all. Keep safe.

Random18 · 13/04/2020 01:01

Magicians its easier for NZ to close borders than the UK.

You know that yet you chose to ignore it..........

NZ have had much fewer cases than the UK.

The UK should have been much better on the testing front.

starlightgazers · 13/04/2020 01:02

Tested but no sign of virus however death certificate says probable cause Covid 19

If someone was previously stable, but subsequently developed a new cough, temperature or other signs of COVID19 then that is highly likely to be the cause. It's a very distinctive illness with very specific symptoms that is very easy to identify, but false negatives do happen for many reasons.

starlightgazers · 13/04/2020 01:04

mochojoes I am sorry to hear about you relative btw Flowers

BigChocFrenzy · 13/04/2020 01:04

France now includes all care home deaths with COVID, which raised their death totals a lot

In Germany anyone dying "with" COVID is counted as dying of it

I live in Germany and TV news recently had some COVID deaths on:
there were 3 people from a care home,
aged 82, 88 and 104, all with multiple comorbidities

BigChocFrenzy · 13/04/2020 01:06

However, most people dying of COVID weren't terminally ill, even the older ones,
so if they died prematurely, it's fair to say COVID killed them

mochojoes · 13/04/2020 01:07

Thank you @starlightgazers, no temp or cough & it's only sorting the certificate out that we have discovered this after being told no virus. They have had one confirmed case in the home so maybe it's an assumption. Just hard we can't be together as a family & have a wait for the funeral.

starlightgazers · 13/04/2020 01:07

@middleager

Bloodyhell that article is shocking, especially as those making the damning claims have no political motive.

starlightgazers · 13/04/2020 01:08

Just hard we can't be together as a family & have a wait for the funeral

It must be awful, I'm so sorry. Such brutal times Flowers

mochojoes · 13/04/2020 01:09

At least they are not suffering now & the care home said it was quick which is some comfort.
