Altercation with butcher

DH just came back from our local butcher and is a bit ShockConfused

The man being served ahead of him ordered 20 chicken thighs, 20 burgers, sausages, minter lamb chops etc

The butcher serving him said "that sounds like a BBQ for a large crowd" and got told to "just fucking bag it all up" Butcher refused saying that not only did it seriously deplete his sticks but that he wouldn't be party to someone breaking the lockdown regulations. The man got swearier and was asked to leave. As he left he shouted that he had driven "fucking miles" and wouldn't be coming back.

DH thinks he didn't quite expect the round of applause the butcher got, or the "well fuck off back there, then" that was shouted at him by a man probably in his 80s.

Apart from the obvious twattishness it struck us that Mr Big obvious didn't expect a hick town butcher, or customers, to be quite so capable of saying no!

Quite different from my encounter in the farm shop last weekend. Made me wonder how all those of you living in urban areas are doing - not saying all urbanites are tests more that we know who our local twats are and tend not to let them get ahead of themselves.

I hope you are all managing to avoid such prats, wherever you live!

What true lockdown heroes!!

StylishMummy · 10/04/2020 13:58

I love your butcher

MrsSnitchnose · 10/04/2020 14:03

Your butcher is a legend ⭐

Laiste · 10/04/2020 14:07

Legendary?

Depleting stocks - fair enough, but why didn't he just say that? Honestly it sounds as if the butcher was quite enjoying lording it over this bloke.

We have a big family under one roof and i'd need that amount of meat for a barbi.

Gillian1980 · 10/04/2020 14:13

@laiste well the customer could have explained that politely rather than telling the butcher to “fucking bag it all up”. I suspect it was that which turned the transaction sour!

GCAcademic · 10/04/2020 14:16

“fucking bag it all up”

What an absolute idiot. Imagine speaking like that to someone who has a cleaver and knows how to use it.

Cocobean30 · 10/04/2020 14:20

@Laiste it sounds like the customers reaction to the butcher does in fact confirm that he was having people round a breaking lockdown rules, plus his horrible attitude. He was responding in kind to that

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/04/2020 14:22

Our butcher is a mild mannered man and hasn't been seen to Lord it over anyone. His first comment was made with a smile. Had Mr Big chosen to explain he has 5 kids he probably would have been served. But he didn't. He chose to swear and bluster.

We live in a tiny market town, our local shops serve an ageing community and are doing a huge amount to keep the vulnerable fed. The butcher has given over a cold store to the local food bank and a farm shop that doesn't have town centre premises. He is also coordinating their deliveries. Hardly a bombastic fool.

Tremendous. I'd have paid to see that.
The butcher sounds like a great bloke.

Rafflesway · 10/04/2020 14:29

Butcher sounds brilliant! 👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟

Elsa8 · 10/04/2020 14:35

Excellent!

Elouera · 10/04/2020 14:36

Whilst I don't condone anyone swearing at the butcher and telling him to just bag it up, would someone in their 80's be the one doing the shopping for a large family gathering or party? Confused.

There is always the chance that he was shopping for other elderly neighbours in isolation in his street/block, buying 3mths worth for him and his wife to stay inside or another legit reason.

Did he say what he needed it all for?

Thisismytimetoshine · 10/04/2020 14:38

Well done him

Laughalot20 · 10/04/2020 14:38

Love the butcher 😍😍😍

Laughalot20 · 10/04/2020 14:39

Also love sweary man in his 80s!

Honeybee85 · 10/04/2020 14:39

Great to hear that butcher choose watching out for others over easy money 👏

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/04/2020 14:39

would someone in their 80's be the one doing the shopping for a large family gathering or party The OP didn't say his age. The man is 80s was further back in the queue.

Oldbutstillgotit · 10/04/2020 14:40

@ Elouera it was a man in the shop who was in his 80s

MsTSwift · 10/04/2020 14:40

If it had been for an innocent reason such as he lived in a commune or was buying for the local care home he would have explained it in a calm way his reaction proves he was bang to rights! Plus selfish in buying too much so not enough left for others

CoronaIsComing · 10/04/2020 14:42

The man having the huge BBQ wasn’t in his 80s, the man in his 80s was a different customer @Elouera.

Well done to Mr Butcher, the man was clearly having a large meet up.

@Laiste really, that much meat for one family? Are you Sue Redford?

Sparklingplasters · 10/04/2020 14:42

Laiste so you have 20 people living at home?

CoronaIsComing · 10/04/2020 14:42

*Radford

Ginfordinner · 10/04/2020 14:43

Why are some posters defending the rude man?
If he was buying for a large family of carnivores or for other people he would have said so. His answer was very telling.

Good for the butcher.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/04/2020 14:44

@Elouera the man in his 80s was another customer. We have a large elderly population, a few over 60s complexes, one of which is over the road from the butcher. Lots of residents have continued to do their own shopping. We just give the extra space, let them jump queues etc.

And no, all Mr Big said was the fucking bag it comment and that he had driven fucking miles to get here. Anything else he might have said was drowned out by comments of the rest of the queue, by which time he had already barged through said queue to get outside - yes, he went out through the in door!

OP posts:
Elouera · 10/04/2020 14:44

Sorry, read it wrong! Thought it was an 80yr old doing the shopping!
