Altercation with butcher

DH just came back from our local butcher and is a bit ShockConfused

The man being served ahead of him ordered 20 chicken thighs, 20 burgers, sausages, minter lamb chops etc

The butcher serving him said "that sounds like a BBQ for a large crowd" and got told to "just fucking bag it all up" Butcher refused saying that not only did it seriously deplete his sticks but that he wouldn't be party to someone breaking the lockdown regulations. The man got swearier and was asked to leave. As he left he shouted that he had driven "fucking miles" and wouldn't be coming back.

DH thinks he didn't quite expect the round of applause the butcher got, or the "well fuck off back there, then" that was shouted at him by a man probably in his 80s.

Apart from the obvious twattishness it struck us that Mr Big obvious didn't expect a hick town butcher, or customers, to be quite so capable of saying no!

Quite different from my encounter in the farm shop last weekend. Made me wonder how all those of you living in urban areas are doing - not saying all urbanites are tests more that we know who our local twats are and tend not to let them get ahead of themselves.

I hope you are all managing to avoid such prats, wherever you live!

He wasn't told what he could or could not buy until he swore at the butcher. At the time he swore the first part of his order was being bagged.

Just interested, do you live here? How else would you know what notices are, or are not, on the door?

No one needs a bloody BBQ just now

People don’t need a bbq no, but if your just having one with your household why wouldn’t you? They haven’t banned fun you know, we aren’t in a fun lockdown

AvalancheKit · 10/04/2020 15:20

@Laiste

You would need nearly 100 pieces of meet to give your immediate family a barbecue?

Lillylouise89 · 10/04/2020 15:21

Give him an OBE we love to hear it! Too many twats out there who don’t get told ‘no’

vanillandhoney · 10/04/2020 15:22

No one needs a bloody BBQ just now.

No-one ever needs a BBQ.

We might be under lockdown, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun with your family and enjoy the weather!

vanillandhoney · 10/04/2020 15:23

No. But if there was a notice up, presumably he'd not have asked for that much food in the first place.

haveanicedayx · 10/04/2020 15:24

the butcher was wrong and rude. there are endless possibilities this man could have need that amount for ...eg he could have a family of 4 and wanted to freeze the meat , and not return for few weeks...he could have a large family, be on a meat only diet...

Saz12 · 10/04/2020 15:25

If you swear at shopkeepers then why would you expect them to serve you?
If someone told me to “just fucking do it” then there’d have to be a very good reason for me to bother.

Doggodogington · 10/04/2020 15:25

That sounds like my butcher, when we had the panic buying a few weeks ago he wouldn’t sell to people who weren’t regulars.

BlackSwan · 10/04/2020 15:25

Butchers have pretty big knives. No sense in swearing at them.

DeRigueurMortis · 10/04/2020 15:26

As pp's have already said, if there was a legitimate reason for his vast order he could have simply said what it was and would have been served.

His attitude here was the issue and points to the very obvious conclusion that the butcher was correct and that he was planning a party.

It's not about policing what people can buy, it's about not enabling people to break the rules whilst also ensuring there is enough stock for the local community (not a rude man whose driven miles to buy party food).

It's no different to supermarkets saying you can only buy 3 tins or 1 pack of loo roll.

I'm volunteering in my community and have spoken to our local mini supermarket (and had it confirmed by the parish council who are organising the volunteer effort) so that I'm allowed to buy more than my allowance because I'm buying for several households with people isolating/vulnerable/shielded. The odd comment at the till from other customers and I've just explained and everyone's been fine. No swearing and no drama.

Some people just seem determined to make excuses for these buggers.

Caaarrrl · 10/04/2020 15:27

the butcher was wrong and rude. there are endless possibilities this man could have need that amount for ...eg he could have a family of 4 and wanted to freeze the meat , and not return for few weeks...he could have a large family, be on a meat only diet...

Then why did he react in such an obnoxious way instead of explaining one of these reasons? There was no excuse for the comment about fucking bagging it all up or whatever the exact words were.

haveanicedayx · 10/04/2020 15:29

no sorry i missed that part..no excuse for swearing at all.

AmelieTaylor · 10/04/2020 15:30

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Well done Mr Butcher & Other Shoppers.

JellyfishandShells · 10/04/2020 15:31

What an absolute idiot. Imagine speaking like that to someone who has a cleaver and knows how to use it

😆

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/04/2020 15:33

@vanillandhoney true. There are notices about numbers of people in the shop and that they have plenty of stock so no need to panic buy and another about getting various deliveries. But nothing about maximum purchases.

But again, he WAS being served until he chose to react to a smiling comment by being rude.

AdoptedBumpkin · 10/04/2020 15:35

Kudos to the butcher for not just taking the money. 👏

Ginfordinner · 10/04/2020 15:41

Were you the rude customer then haveaniceday?

Bringringbring12 · 10/04/2020 15:43

The butcher should have a limit per item going forward.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 10/04/2020 15:43

It’s all very well to say Oh, but he could have been doing a monthly shop/buying for a care home but surely you’d have to a bit dense to go to what Op describes as a small market town to do that Confused. Why on earth would anyone “drive for miles” as this guy did, to buy that amount of meat without checking in advance that the shop could actually provide it? Surely people can see that in selling all that to one customer, without it having been advance ordered, the butcher might not have enough left for their regular customers and the vulnerable people in their community.

The butcher and the customers were right to send him on his way, good for them 👍

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 10/04/2020 15:44

Kudos to the butcher and his customers. Lockdown Loon 😂😂

EverythingChanges321 · 10/04/2020 15:46

Gold medal to the butcher and other shoppers.
Our butcher is fab too and looks after the community.
Viva le butcher! Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/04/2020 15:48

The butcher should have a limit per item going forward. Except we are quite rural and many people, farmers etc, don't shop every week and always bulk buy. That and he sells bulk buy boxes.

If he didn't then he'd lose a lot of his regular, pre-COVID customers.

I'm not sure how I can better call convey that it was the rudeness that ended the transaction.

OP posts:
Leaannb · 10/04/2020 15:48

Your butcher was an ass. Not to mention dumb. He had to idea why that man was buying that food. Thats a weekly shop for people

Leaannb · 10/04/2020 15:49

@CuriousSamphire so if he always sells bulk buy why did he turn this person away
