Altercation with butcher

DH just came back from our local butcher and is a bit ShockConfused

The man being served ahead of him ordered 20 chicken thighs, 20 burgers, sausages, minter lamb chops etc

The butcher serving him said "that sounds like a BBQ for a large crowd" and got told to "just fucking bag it all up" Butcher refused saying that not only did it seriously deplete his sticks but that he wouldn't be party to someone breaking the lockdown regulations. The man got swearier and was asked to leave. As he left he shouted that he had driven "fucking miles" and wouldn't be coming back.

DH thinks he didn't quite expect the round of applause the butcher got, or the "well fuck off back there, then" that was shouted at him by a man probably in his 80s.

Apart from the obvious twattishness it struck us that Mr Big obvious didn't expect a hick town butcher, or customers, to be quite so capable of saying no!

Quite different from my encounter in the farm shop last weekend. Made me wonder how all those of you living in urban areas are doing - not saying all urbanites are tests more that we know who our local twats are and tend not to let them get ahead of themselves.

I hope you are all managing to avoid such prats, wherever you live!

Damn Romanians coming over here and eating our meat!

Blobby10 · 11/04/2020 13:57

@PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock I don’t think them being Romanian mattered in the slightest !! if they hadn’t been trying to bully the butcher and then his wife into supplying a massive Order with hefty discount that would have left locals going without no one would even thoight about where he was from 😂😂😂

JingsMahBucket · 11/04/2020 15:04

@PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock 😏 I understood you.

Liketoshop · 11/04/2020 17:25

Well done that butcher!!!

MyWitzEnd · 11/04/2020 17:43

Inkpaperstars · 11/04/2020 18:04

Fantastic thread title OP. As a vegetarian I have been nervously resisting clicking on it, but curiosity got the better of me!

pitujones · 11/04/2020 18:31

Laiste wtf is wrong with you? Was that man your husband? Obviously his response was met accordingly twats everywhere

Cam2020 · 11/04/2020 18:48

Good on every one in the shop! The customer sounds like an utter twat! Even if the quantity was legit and he was tired of comments, he says extremely rude and deserved what he got either way. Love the man in his 80s Grin

CrocodileFrock · 11/04/2020 19:04

The man should have ordered a single mumsnet chicken.

It would have lasted for weeks.

HemlockStarglimmer · 11/04/2020 19:45

CrocodileFrock 😁😁

Glaceon · 11/04/2020 19:54

Dying at the large family comments.

Nevermind truly large families make up less than 2% and are usually well known locally. We arent seeing this kind of rudeness from them.

And what kind of greedy people need 100 pieces of meat per week to feed their household unless you've 20 in there?

Glaceon · 11/04/2020 19:55

I mean fuck how big are some of your portions?

juneo63 · 11/04/2020 19:56

I think your butcher is great 😁👍

AvalancheKit · 11/04/2020 20:36

I imagine him being like Fred the butcher on Coronation Street.

“You cant have that much young fella. I said you can’t have that much. There’s other folks round here you know. I said there other folks round here!”

Ginfordinner · 11/04/2020 20:46

Never have I been so glad to not have a large family. Shopping once a week for 6+ people must be a nightmare.

I was also thinking this when I was hanging washing on the line today, and only had bedding for 2 beds to hang out.

Umascooter · 11/04/2020 22:10

My local butcher has closed its doors and now offers a (free) delivery service for orders over £50 only.

He is protecting himself and his family business that is decades old.

I do live in an area where some families have 12 children and it is not unusual, but I have been pushed out of the opportunity to buy my small one person purchases.

As I was out in the sunshine today, there were BBQs all around me, but no way of telling who is in a huge family unit and who is flouting the rules.

Your butcher did the right thing and understands his local customers.

Mine wouldn't sell me a chicken for my birthday

excitedmumtobe87 · 11/04/2020 22:40

if he was buying for a large family he would have politely explained that though... rather than getting defensive, swearing and telling the butcher to bag it up.

TheBewildernessisWeetabix · 11/04/2020 22:58

I think it is a mistake to assume that dishonesty or wrongdoing is the reason people are rude and impatient.

Eldest shopped for me last week and had to go to three shops to get less than $100 worth of groceries. By the third stop I am confident he felt like a rage monster.

CJsGoldfish · 12/04/2020 01:43

Good on every one in the shop!
Which, by the end of the story was one person and possibly a dull cheer 🤣🤣🤣

Reginabambina · 12/04/2020 01:53

It’s irrelevant why the man was buying the food, there’s no excuse to be so rude. I appreciate that lockdown is stressful but the entire world is putting up with this. Why would you snap at people who are probably having an equally shit time ruining both your days when you could be polite and maybe crack a joke of two and make the whole situation that little bit better.

Barney60 · 12/04/2020 09:11

well done to your butcher, we need more like this!

Happygirl79 · 12/04/2020 09:19

What a hero to say no to the man!
The customer was obviously having a BBQ which is forbidden right now and stopped in his tracks
