Why? Why oh why are people still coming here on holiday?

Devon. We have seen caravans and motorhomes and people obviously on holiday (canoe and suitcases etc on car roof, all that stuff; it's bloody obvious), bikes loaded with camping stuff....

We live 20 miles from the beach and none of us have seen a wave for weeks. DH spends half the day complaining because he can't go to the beach in this lovely weather as he normally does.

Thank goodness the market is not on, or we'd be over-run. Really worried as both dd and I are vulnerable (not extremely vulnerable) and dh freaks out every time he has to go out as our Designated Shopper that he'll bring it home to us.

Why are people such arseholes?

We're going to need road blocks!

@TeensArghhhh, I've owned the car for six years, and will own it for many more, and the previous owner was developing wave energy power generation systems, based in Cornwall and Orkney as research sites. Not quite the spin you seem to want to put on it.

PoppliosBubble · 10/04/2020 21:10

plantlife the second home owners that have piled into my town (who I’ve already stated are mostly from the Midlands not London) have come here because they have more space and there’s loads of really lovely walks that you can do from your front door. Most of them are already retired so it’s making our already disproportionately elderly population even more at risk.

The economy of the place I live is almost exclusively tourism. People here don’t hate outsiders, it would be pretty stupid to hate the people supporting our economy. But right now it is in no ones interested for people who don’t live here full time to be here. You seem determined to make this some London versus the rest of UK grudge match.

plantlife · 10/04/2020 21:17

I'm sorry if I've been oversensitive. It's just seeing posts saying "London germs". It's hard enough for all of us here and other big cities because we know we're at higher risk of dying because of where we live. It's also the pretending they think it's safer in cities. Nasty comments make it more upsetting. I often see posts being nasty about Londoners so I'm more sensitive. I understand the no travel. I don't want to travel because apart from anything else it's too dangerous to travel. Even if someone's in a car and not on public transport they risk being in an accident, and it's a very bad time to need hospital. I'm sorry for being so upset but it's not nice seeing some of the posts. I know not everyone's like that.

Arnoldthecat · 10/04/2020 21:18

Some people live in vans. Also we have the travelling community. What should they do and what services can they access?

Fosler · 10/04/2020 21:21

I've no idea what is going on and I'm very sceptical about death figures. How can they perform enough post-mortems or confirm cause of death in a day?

But really, why not observe government guidelines? We all want this over and done with. I never thought I'd say this but, yes, fine them. People, just stay home! How is that hard? I know if you're in a flat with children it must be hard. But it's better than you, their carer, contracting this virus! Stay home.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 10/04/2020 21:22

I'm English and live in Wales. The local community are very against holiday makers appearing at this time (quite rightly so) and have been very vocal in the comments section of local news sites about it. However I've seen comments like 'fed up of hearing English accents in the supermarket' etc. This really isn't fair for someone like me who actually lives here and doesn't want to get a mouthful of someone when trying to get the essentials in.

TeensArghhhh · 10/04/2020 21:25

We have people travelling down the M4 from South Wales to West Wales. We don't want them here either. Our tiny part of the world has set up field hospitals for our population. Why should someone out of area take up that space?

TeensArghhhh · 10/04/2020 21:28

I've owned the car for six years

Nice. Go you 🚗 Maybe it's time to register your car at your address - or not. Up to you really. No need for laughing emoji. Nobody is impressed 🤷

Arnoldthecat · 10/04/2020 21:34

Here is the law. This is not "the guidelines" or whats in the paper or what Karen off facebook says. Some police officers and indeed their superiors could do with schooling themselves on this also www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/350/made

There are slight variants for wales and scotland.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 10/04/2020 21:40

We’re in Dorset, police have been turning people away from certain beaches today. We live three miles at most from the sea and still aren’t going as my 4 year old couldn’t walk that far and back. People are selfish, selfish dicks.

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2020 21:44

Maybe they just followed Prince Charles' example - he wasn't fined.

Arnoldthecat · 10/04/2020 21:46

But there is nothing wrong with people walking on the beaches (looking at the peaches) as long as they maintain distance. The police are making up the law. Some of them need to go read it.

nocciola · 10/04/2020 21:48

The police are at both bridges on Anglesey turning people around. They were in our village yesterday as a couple of people were in a holiday let. Locals are reporting anyone rocking up and the police are moving them out. We love visitors normally, but right now, Anglesey is closed to visitors.

TeensArghhhh · 10/04/2020 21:53

But there is nothing wrong with people walking on the beaches

No. Not if you can walk to the beach. The rule in Wales is no driving for exercise or dog walking, yet some special people think its OK to tow their caravans miles for a beach holiday!

honeybee88 · 10/04/2020 22:00

@boredinthehouse tells us on here that she has a car registered up country. Does she not know it is illigal to change your address and not notify DVLA ? Does mumsnet have your correct address? Hhmmm....

Wolfgirrl · 10/04/2020 22:01

@plantlife

Understandable! I'm from a small village in the SW, honestly I dont think people are anti Londoner, it's just used as a sweeping term for second home owners and city people in general. So it's a misnomer really. Even then the people they are referring to probably drive everyone else in their cities mad too with their entitled attitudes.

Pumpkintopf · 10/04/2020 22:20

Allegedly people are sending luggage by courier to avoid police patrols?! Shocking if true.

So we have 2 homes - as a family we all have our own homes and we also share a house in Cornwall
My parents spend about a week each month there - we with school age kids spend the holidays there
It’s probably occupied 50 % of the year

We pay council tax 100% of the year - we support local events - we let our neighbours use our home for their relatives visiting at no cost - we are fortunate that we have some money and spend more of it in Cornwall supporting local establishments than many of the locals do- we do not shop in Asda, we shop locally in the local butchers, grocers and local family run shop
My parents went to Cornwall for a week early March - I told them to stay there even though they weren’t keen as they are in there late 70’s
They haven’t left the house since they arrived
Are they they cunts that you lot are talking about ??? Or do you just want second home owners to come buy houses pay stamp duty, council tax for your facilities etc and not be allowed to use them ??
Not everyone in Cornwall who doesn’t live there permanently is a cunt - many of them are paying for your services
I’m utterly fed up of people stereotyping people who have no frigging idea
Yes some people are acting like twats but not everyone
I’m getting utterly fed up with all the stereotyping going on right now - 99-% of the country are doing their best and I’m sick of the general criticisms

CoffeeRunner · 10/04/2020 22:31

I’m not surprised at this. Some people will just never accept that they are not an exception to the rule.

Even where I live, in the land locked Midlands, we have a modest “tourist spot” about a mile from our house (it’s a pretty canal junction). Police are even having to park up there & turn cars away! Nothing’s open anyway, pub & cafes etc are closed. So why make the journey? Why do people think it’s OK?

mumoseven · 10/04/2020 22:34

Fucked off with the people running to their 2nd homes here (east anglia) using our resources when ill, using our delivery drivers to get food, going out and about and picnicking on our beaches.

Arnoldthecat · 10/04/2020 22:39

The people and local authorities in places such as Cornwall are complaining loudly but how did it come to pass that rich /middle class types now own holiday homes in those areas? Answer..the locals sold them to them for vast profits. Thats why their children can no longer afford a home there. Have they run Gordon Ramsey out of town yet or are they (a) too scared to confront him or (b) appreciative of the money he spends locally

Quetiapina · 10/04/2020 22:44

I’m Cornish, from Bodmin Moor so not a tourist spot. Like many others I had to leave Cornwall, and then Dartmoor to get work in a city up country. We were due to be visiting in March. Luckily we didn’t as I now have the virus and am very sick. I live 2 minutes from the General Hospital and my husband to care for me so I was allowed home after tests on the understanding I return if situation worsens at all. I miss my family, who live in Cornwall and Dartmoor. But the hospital situation in Cornwall is dire, with Derriford in Plymouth being the closest hospital. I would hate to have caused infection in a relatively clean but impoverished area.

TeensArghhhh · 10/04/2020 22:50

So we have 2 homes

Lucky you! Stay in your 1st home. It isn’t difficult

TeensArghhhh · 10/04/2020 22:56

I miss my family

Don’t we all? Well, those of us who don’t see the need to be running back and fore different areas. If everyone uses common sense and stick to the rules we will be able to meet up with our loved ones sooner, rather than later.

The problem we have is some people think they are above the law..... and it is becoming more and more people trying to find loopholes to suit themselves.

FFS what don’t people understand?
