It would be a terrible, terrible mistake to ban exercise outside

Domestic violence has already increased, and whilst I know some people have been ignoring the rules the majority are abiding by them. The knock on effects for people’s mental health and the safety of women and children inside the home would be terrible.
It would be such an infringement of people’s liberty and terrible for the mental and physical health of so many people.
Imagine being stuck indoors all day with young children in a flat with no outside space.
This idea worries me more than anything else about the current crisis. I hope so much that it doesn’t happen. I feel like it’s almost like a reaction in anger because not everyone will do what they’re told: like a smack.

am just wondering how many of those insisting they must go out for exercise used to to go out for exercise before the virus struck?

Did I walk round my housing estate every day? No. Did I walk to and from work, and out to the shops at lunch? Yes. My step count in a day at home barely touches 2000. Average daily count previously was about 7000. So, yes, I’m going to go out for a walk and get some air.

Me too. I hope to fuck it's worth it, because it's a hell of a price to pay.

The 13 year old did die alone and their parents were not allowed to be with them.

That is contrary to current NHS guidelines. There must be more to that story.

ellanwood · 05/04/2020 14:24

I have a friend in Madrid who says she is on Day 20 of lockdown and hasn't left her flat except for absolute basic shopping since then. No walks allowed, as far as I can tell.

PieceOfMaria · 05/04/2020 14:24

The 13 year old did die alone and their parents were not allowed to be with them.

As sad as that is, I doubt the 13 year old knew much about it.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/04/2020 14:24

Why does this matter? People are making positive health changes within the current social distancing rules. Good!
It’s mean to make people feel ashamed for trying to get fit. Long term it’s a change everyone should make if they are able to.

Great. Let's make it a ruling that everyone currently insisting on exercising outside their home is compelled to continue it for a year after lockdown ends.

Bet that puts paid to a lot of it

leckford · 05/04/2020 14:25

It will cause resentment, we live somewhere rural. We walk out every morning around the footpaths here, meet very few people and everyone keeps a their distance. Just say hello and walk on. Everyone will be furious if the actions of morons in places like London, were the virus is really bad spoil it for others.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/04/2020 14:26

Or allowed to go to his funeral

Howmanysleepsnow · 05/04/2020 14:27

Imagine being stuck indoors all day with young children in a flat with no outside space.

And now imagine being stuck inside all day with those children and your husband showing various degrees of COVID19, in one case being advised they need to go to A&E. That’s much harder, trust me!

PieceOfMaria · 05/04/2020 14:27

Tehy may not have been doing formal exercise but one way or another they were out and about, walking and getting some vitamin D, just by existing as part of a normal life. It's not like you need to have been a super-jogger or a gym bunny to feel the negative effects of not being able to move around in anything other than a very confined indoor space. People need some fresh air and some physical movement to stay sane, no matter how limited that might be compared to marathon runners and Lance Armstrong types.

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 05/04/2020 14:27

Actually I don't have think a family having a picnic is a risk.

There risking comes from being close to other people families people and passing on the virus, or parks being too busy that people cannot sit away from each other.

But the actual act of sitting in the sun having a picnic is not risk and could do the family a huge amount of good!

Raised vitamin d seems to be something scientist are interested in, in fighting covid, vitamin c... Covid can't live as well in sun and ultra violets rays.

Matt Hancock is utterly bonkers!
Very very strange man. Did anyone see how he dodged sir Patrick valance question on herd immunity!

Slippery.... And the way he said his throat was sore but he kept working!
Perculiar, how he really wanted to beat it now he... Had had it. Confused

Because maybe the desire wasn't there before?

BlondieBeachBum · 05/04/2020 14:28

There aren't enough Police to monitor how many people are out for longer than an hour, or who go out 3 times in one day.

Far, far easier to impose a complete ban, and have Police cars or the Army driving around the streets.

My DH is a Police Officer. He is having to clear beaches and golf courses today. People have been INSTRUCTED on what to do, and they are ignoring it. A complete lock down is the only way now.

All thanks to the idiots in society who cannot follow the rules.

The virus doesn't travel on it's own, people move it around. The only way to stop the spread is for everyone to stay at home.

PieceOfMaria · 05/04/2020 14:29

golf courses? Surely those are all closed?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/04/2020 14:31

So your family can go to the park for a picnic but no one else's? Can you not see how ridiculous this is?

As for vitamin D - all of us in the UK are but D deficient because over winter months the sun is not strong enough. Us going for a walk every day for three weeks won't change that. If you're really concerned about improving vitamin D then we all need to take a supplement.

DVandVulnerableToCovid · 05/04/2020 14:32

@Boudicabooandbulldogs You'd be allowed to leave in an emergency. Many DV victims weren't allowed work, friends, cafe before the virus. If people want to help, campaign for and support increased access to online chat. For example Women's Aid now have online chat between 10am-12pm. Obviously a much easier way of contacting them and asking for help when stuck in with an abuser. Also easier than by phone for a lot of us whose confidence is shot. That's a very limited time period though and so it's very very busy.

Iggly · 05/04/2020 14:32

Maybe if the Tories hadnt under funded the nhs and maybe if they’d got a shift on as soon as they knew this was a problem, we’d not have this threat.

They’re trying to shift the blame onto a very tiny minority here - those tiny minority who aren’t observing the rules - when ultimately they’re to blame for being to slow to react to covid 19.

PinkCashmereTowel · 05/04/2020 14:33

It honesrly makes me so angry that people are not adhering to the rules. The people filmed yesterday were selfish and moronic. All it means is that the lockdown will be deepened and extended, and there will be another peak.

I cannot stand it that people think this is overblown. There are over 4 thousand deaths in this country alone and people on the frontline are sobbing and begging people to stay the fuck home.

Just stay the fuck home. You stupid fucking selfish fuckjobs.

m0therofdragons · 05/04/2020 14:34

Walking is so fantastic for the lungs. And if you are able to do it, running too. There is nothing worse for your lung health than sitting down all day.

Coronavirus is probably worse for your lungs than sitting in all day! Hmm

ALeapOfFaith · 05/04/2020 14:34

I live that fact that suddenly everyone has become a fitness fanatic desperately in need of daily exercise for their mental health and yet prior to the pandemic you couldn’t get 80% of the population off their bloody arses hence the growing obesity crisis!

Many countries have done this complete lockdown the risk of death is outweighing, mental health, domestic abuse, liberty, etc.

Fithles · 05/04/2020 14:35

Hear

You go to the park and start sunbathing. Someone comes along and sits down coughing and sneezing all around you. How can that be less risky than you walking past them?
*
This appears to be a problem with someone uncontrollably coughing and not self-isolating though - not a problem with sunbathing/picnicking.

ALeapOfFaith · 05/04/2020 14:35

If the government had made daily exercise mandatory rather than staying home I think it would have had more success keeping people home!

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 14:36

The 13 year old may not have known his parents were not there when he was dying. But I am sure the parents really wanted to be with him. I hadn't realised they could not have a funeral for him either. So sad.

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 05/04/2020 14:36

Is there any a sort of of '' deformed covidister''? Like the zeal of the reformed smoker?

I've had my eye on this since January.
I've been rubbished by friends, had vicious remarks when I've gently suggested this could be a big deal.

People moaning about lack of salaries(one partner on 100k and tons of savings) able to work from home, Moaning about loss of grandparents baby sitting being selfish wanting to self isolate!

Any... Now those folks are the front line on social media condemning people!! Vicious posts about people walking out in the ☀!

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 14:36

@fithles People cough all the time even without corona.
