"Matt Hancock told the BBC's Andrew Marr that the government would "take action" if further measures are needed to bring the coronavirus under control.

It comes after reports of groups of people gathering in parks during sunny weather this weekend."

So do we think this will happen - normally this is how it goes, the threat comes, and a week later it's reality. It's a shame that people still flouted the rules this weekend :(

I can't see a thread on this already but please let me know if there is one!!

Yes I agree unprotected staff is spreading the virus, not someone on a solitary bike ride.

MarieG10 · 05/04/2020 17:37

I'm not a fan of Angela Rayner (new deputy leader Labour Party) but she did have a point about the people telling others to stay inside have nice houses with gardens.

It must be very difficult when you like in a bed sit or small flat or house although it doesn't excuse blatantly flouting the rules and being reckless

Saysaysay2 · 05/04/2020 17:38

@wonderstuff relieved to hear that. Makes it much more tolerable.

Lookingforwardtomyeastereggs · 05/04/2020 17:40

^Everything is fine and dandy, till someone you love dies because they came into contact with the virus.
Then in your pain you will know how it feels to lose a loved one because of the disregard for others by a selfish person.
That person could be you, you could kill your child because you had no idea they suffered from an ailment that in normal times would have caused them a few days in bed.
I am not willing to risk my family, just so I can go out for 3 hours on a bike ride.
^

I'm getting a bit sick of people like you spouting out trash like this.

Where is your evidence that going out for a bike ride spreads Coronavirus?

mummmy2017 · 05/04/2020 17:40

Blakes77 your I'm alright Jack attitude must really endure you to the people in flats.
But of course it seems fine to you with your isolated areas to roam.
Feel free to boat on Facebook and post plenty of pictures, so people can see your true colours.

wonderstuff · 05/04/2020 17:41

Completely agree re speeding. I think that one of the first things they could have done was lower the speed limit everywhere by 10mph. Few accidents, lower demands on NHS and emergency services.

DarnedSocks · 05/04/2020 17:42

Yes agree with PP. It suits the government to have us blaming each other. Instead of asking if we're ordering enough if the drugs that can help treat it and widening access to these drugs. They're no miracle cure but there's certainly been some success so far - and it's definitely better than nothing. Currently only patients with no underlying conditions will be treated with these drugs. That excludes a very large proportion of the population. Bear in mind underlying conditions in this instance include bring overweight or having a smoking history.

dkanin · 05/04/2020 17:42

How are people going to take dogs to the loo if they've got to walk a little way to get to their local park/nearest area of grass?

Blondiney · 05/04/2020 17:44

Thank you @wonderstuff that's a huge weight off my mind.

DarnedSocks · 05/04/2020 17:49

As for exercise. I hope it's not completely banned but you'll find a lot of home exercise guides available for free online. People do survive periods inside. Sometimes there's no choice. Illness or an injury. It can happen at any time to anybody. Hopefully any tighter restrictions will be like some countries where you'll allowed within a few hundred metres of your home rather than a total ban but in the end it's temporary. Death is permanent.

Arnoldthecat · 05/04/2020 17:50

I would suggest he concentrates more on the Governments exit strategy from this mess rather than threatening people in this way. Get his constabulary to hand out more tickets and be more assertive. I am doing the right thing and taking all possible precautions. If he imposes this imprisonment he risks riots on the streets and i shall certainly continue to go out taking all precautions.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/04/2020 17:58

Hancock has said this afternoon he won't be changing the rules on exercise. Which is the right call imo

He didn't say that. He said he isn't doing it now but they will do it if necessary.

Boris also denied planning on going into lockdown and then did it 3 days later

Bearbehind · 05/04/2020 18:00

Hancock has said this afternoon he won't be changing the rules on exercise. Which is the right call imo.

No he didn’t

He said there’s no ‘plans’ to change them ‘imminently’

Do people really not see the difference there?

Given the rate at which things are changing, I’d say that’s pretty much code for ‘the rules will change next week’

mummmy2017 · 05/04/2020 18:00

Then how come other country's are accepting these measures.
How come their population are willing to ride this out by staying in to stop the deaths.
What does that say about people on MN who feel their want of excercise is more important.

ZombieFan · 05/04/2020 18:01

I would advise a stricter regime before banning exercise. Only 30 minutes exercise a day maximum 1 km from residence, with a form filled in before you leave the house (time and date on it) + proof of address carried at all time.

Only running, jogging or cycling allowed, all dogs on leashes. No sitting, or standing around talking outside. Anyone found not moving when they are outside given an automatic £1000+ fine.

DarnedSocks · 05/04/2020 18:03

That would be the most reasonable solution @ZombieFan. A fair and sensible balance.

DCOkeford · 05/04/2020 18:04

Its the standard Media Training response to say "we have no plans to do x"

Gives them pretty much carte balance to pivot in the future.

Daffodil101 · 05/04/2020 18:06

Tuesday. That’s when it’ll change.

orangejuicer · 05/04/2020 18:08

I assume you're including walking there too Zombie.

Bit OTT in my opinion.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 05/04/2020 18:09

both the CMO and Deputy CMO have said several times that we need to balance the needs of physical and mental well-being. I believe their advice to the govt will be very firmly not to ban exercise, but possibly send out more firm guidance i.e. once a day, max 45 minutes and do not drive somewhere to exercise.

Bearbehind · 05/04/2020 18:10

daffodil, I’m not brave enough to state a date, but I’m convinced it’ll be before the Easter weekend

4 days of self entitled fuckers thinking the rules don’t apply to them is too big a risk for the government to take

mooboy · 05/04/2020 18:11

Angela Rayner (new deputy leader Labour Party) but she did have a point about the people telling others to stay inside have nice houses with gardens. I agree people with gardens should be more aware of how bloody lucky they are and allow the people who live in flats more public space - I'm sure a request by the Gov would yield good results.

PotholeParadise · 05/04/2020 18:12

And anyone that says I can't go outside is basically a Nazi.

Go pick up a history book.

Daffodil101 · 05/04/2020 18:13

Just get a good walk tomorrow. And Tuesday in the morning.
