People demanding a full lock down

It really really annoys me! Most of us are following rules. Not even going for a walk most days. People are kicking off on my local corna page that theres more cars in town today. So they now think we need a full lock down.

Firstly it's the weekend. More people will be shopping due to being at work all week? People might be shopping for other family and dropping it off.

Theres a police statement that the a52 is really quiet and they are saying well done for listening.

People are allowed out for walks. It's important for dogs, children and adults to get air and move around. It should be one walk a day. It can't be controlled if 400 people choose to do just that between 1-2pm or only 30 do. So yes the streets may sometimes show more people. But most of them are probably just going for a walk. The only thing we have left for our minds and health.

I'm not talking about people having picnics,
Travelling for an afternoon walk somewhere,
Sneaking to see family unless they need help.

I'm saying the majority of people are going to be doing the decent thing.

I think rather than fully locking us down fine the minority sat in groups and doing the "wrong" things. Give them a full lockdown but don't punish the many decent people.

The parents/people in flats without gardens need to walk

Young children need to move.

We all need to move about.

Also i wish people would stop getting in a rage about cars being out. There are no online shopping slots. So thousands of locals will need to go out for food each week. Milk and bread etc will need buying for many every few days. Pet food needs buying. Prescriptions need collecting. Workers need to go to and from work.

A huge majority of people are following the rules. I'm sick of everyone being put into the same category. My kids have gone for their 3rd walk in two weeks just now with their dad. I'm sure people will be tutting and presuming we are another family out and not listening. They need to get out for 15 minutes today though. They are starting to climb the walls and get bored.

Far too many irate people at the moment.

Then shouldn't they be testing more first. To see how many have got immunity already?
Thereally isn't a test that works for that yet.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 04/04/2020 22:02

They say a pandemic is when 40-70% of population become infected. If Covid hits that 70% of the global population, almost 8billion, that's an infect number of around 5600000000 with a death rate of just 1% That's 56000000 people dead globally.

But sure, everyone nip out daily for essentials..

fromlittleacorns · 04/04/2020 22:09

"Then shouldn't they be testing more first. To see how many have got immunity already?

I think there is a test - that is the '4th pillar' of the testing strategy, but it sounds as though it isn't suitable for mass use - there isn't an 'off the peg' test that could be used on a large number of people. Matt hancock said on Thurs:

"The fourth pillar is surveillance. We are conducting some of the biggest surveys in the world to find out what proportion of the population have already had the virus. This is done using a high accuracy antibody test operated by Public Health England at their Porton Down science campus. We will use these tests to help strengthen our scientific understanding and inform us all on the big choices we have to make about social distancing measures and how we exit from this crisis."

RuffleCrow · 04/04/2020 22:12

"Milk and bread aren't essentials and don't need to be purchased every few days". Hmm Only on MN.

Quinoa and roast artichokes, on the other hand, are Hampstead's lockdown must-haves. My pantry is positively groaning under the weight of it all. Grin

Londongirl88888 · 04/04/2020 22:12

Well yes people do need to nip out for food and supplies.

Considering we no longer go to school, nursery, college, university, many places of work

Restaurants, bars, pubs, club, events, sports and all crowd gathering events are cancelled.

Most shops are shut. We can't go in the doctors, dentists, hairdressers etc.

We can't see family, friends etc.

We can't go for days out, holidays, beaches, picnics, parks etc.

I think buying essentials is low risk and essential ofcourse to life and being able to live.

Shall we all just started eating out of a tin and only going to the shop when we our kitchen is bare.

I'd much rather my family continued to eat a healthy balanced diet and didn't have to give up milk and bread etc to stay in. We will end up ill from being over cautious

When will people realise that you're not STUCK at home, you're SAFE at home.

Mascotte · 04/04/2020 22:15

@JorisBonson you might be safe from the virus but that does not equate to safe.

Candycane45 · 04/04/2020 22:18

Londongirl, I’m no expert at all. But from what I’ve read, around 80% of people will get the virus mildly. Some will show no symptoms at all. Others will become very sick, like a bad flu, but not need hospitalisation. However this is still classed as mild - mild is anything less than hospitalisation. But it could be nothing more than a mild cough and cold symptoms - depends on the individual.

However 20% will get seriously ill from the virus and will need hospitalisation. Of that they think around 2% will die.
They don’t fully understand why some people become seriously ill. But it is likely linked to overall health and immune system and how the body reacts to the virus. So if you’re healthy and have no pre conditions you’re 80% likely to only get mild symptoms. However, some healthy people do get seriously ill and require hospitalisation. And occasionally they die. They don’t fully understand why this is. As I said I’m no expert so this is just based on what I’ve read.

I agree that they need testing in place before releasing the lockdown. I think that’s what they’re waiting for. But from what I’ve read it’s on the way.

Ultimately most of us will end up exposed to the virus so we need to try and stay healthy. A vaccine will take at least a year before it’s ready, and then they need to think about how to roll it out. A lockdown can’t stay in place long term, society would stop functioning.

JorisBonson · 04/04/2020 22:20

Yes I agree @Mascotte but that's a whole other kettle of fish.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 04/04/2020 22:21

We'll be a nation of athletes following this

From a short walk/run each day? When most people's activity levels have dropped massively because they are no longer leaving the house for other things?

Your definition of athlete must be slightly different to mine..... unless you're just exaggerating because you resent the idea of people stretching their legs and getting some vitamin D?

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 04/04/2020 22:23

When will people realise that you're not STUCK at home, you're SAFE at home.

Tell that to the people living with abusive partners or parents.

JorisBonson · 04/04/2020 22:24

@ReceptacleForTheRespectable I've already said further up that I agree with that point, however in this instance I'm referring to the masses who simply cannot bear to be at home and must sunbathe with friends.

Mascotte · 04/04/2020 22:25

@JorisBonson that’s just a ridiculous and dismissive point

Toddlerteaplease · 04/04/2020 22:28

Since you mention the A52 I presume you must be in my area. I don't think it's hit us yet. Our hospitals are still quiet. But it will hit any day soon.

JorisBonson · 04/04/2020 22:30

@Mascotte

I'm referring to the virus and those that think the rules don't apply to them, because I thought (obviously wrongly🙄) thats what this thread was about.

I've been trapped both mentally and physically with an abuser so I can't even imagine what some people are going through right now.

Doryhunky · 04/04/2020 22:39

OP I agree. I have been wfh all week so have not been out at all. Today was the first time I. A week the kids have been out at all. We went to the park. It was essential for our mental health. We avoided all equipment and people. If we are stopped from that I dread to think what will happen. People forget that some people are in worse situations at home than others.

Londongirl88888 · 04/04/2020 22:42

@Candycane45

Thank you. Yes that makes sense. It's just grim isn't it. To think this has never happened in our time or our parents it's just scary. When you think how people just spread around viruses all the time without a second thought. We all have had many coughs, fevers etc. It's the thought of getting a normal virus and not knowing if it's just a cold. I imagine this winter will be a very scary time.

Let's hope a vaccine is available soon.

I do worry about my little boy. He's 2 and technically healthy. Last year he woke up grunting and wasn't breathing properly (14 months old) we took him to a&e and within the first hour of being there they gave him a double dose of paractemol. Told me his heart rate was too high. He had a fever of 39.5. they got a theatre team down to insert a cannula. They pumped him with a strong antibiotic and put him on a drip. He was taken by ambulance to a children's ward an hour away. They did tests and a chest x-ray and confirmed he had a patch of pnunomia in his Lung. He was in for 4 days having antibiotics put in the cannula every 6 hours. Then ten days of is syringe feeding him them. If he had those symptoms now they would guess he had coronavirus wouldn't they? We both caught the cough he had off him and it made us feel terrible. It was a productive cough though! It just makes you wonder! Also is he vunerable to this strain? Or is he pretty safe as it seemed to be a one of last year?

I will do everything I can to make sure he's not exposed but eventually we will all have to risk it I guess.

Stay safe @Toddlerteaplease

eaglejulesk · 04/04/2020 22:58

To those of you who use a lot of milk - have you never heard of milk powder?

Mascotte · 04/04/2020 23:01

There’s nothing wrong with buying milk ffs

Gronky · 04/04/2020 23:01

have you never heard of milk powder

🤢

Londongirl88888 · 04/04/2020 23:03

That sounds rank. I'll stick to normal milk thanks.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with going to the shop every few days for food (including those niche gourmet treats, milk and bread)

MelbaToast · 04/04/2020 23:14

Depends what you class as every few days. I appreciate that not everyone has a car but why go to the supermarket to buy one or two things?

Tonyaster · 04/04/2020 23:16

We are a family of five. Currently supermarket shopping once a week but need to top up bread and milk once a week.
