Anyone else noticed an awful lot of cars on the roads today in comparison to recent days?

I was gonna pop out to the store as it's been 9 days in the house and I'm running low. But apparently some of the shops have lifted some of their limits. Think all those cars are going there to panic stock up again? Don't want caught in a cram.

sadly this was inevitable and there was a recent thread on MN quoting from the Guardian Angry about an retired judge saying the police can only police by consent - he sits in the HOL.

I would agree with the idea that society conforms by consent so that we do not going around robbing each other because there is no policeman guarding every house.
But these are not normal times - this is life and death to many even if you yourself will not die. We were asked to stay at home, not to make non-essential journeys. Quite simple really
What happens is that the selfish oafs (including some who should know better) read what this retired judge has said (it is not a judicial decision) and think that means they can get in their cars and drive anywhere - because the police cannot do anything and it is their right and the police are infringing their liberties.
More deaths will happen, the peak will be delayed because this kind of thinking has taken hold and so many people have thought of themselves rather than the greater good. Angry

Not here, if I go out to the back of my house there is a main road and a Lidl a short distance away but it looks very quiet.

This is why i think the UK will ultimately fare much worse than other countries, because in many places it's only really a half arsed lockdown. I'm in Spain and we are on day 17 of a lockdown so strict that we can't even go for a walk. This week all but essential production has been halted.
I went out earlier as I needed office supplies for my job and I can't get them online in time (we're allowed to buy office supplies). There were virtually no cars on the roads (outskirts of a city), no pedestrians. It was dead. I spotted 2 police checkpoints, although I wasn't stopped. I took paperwork with me to show where I was going, in case I was stopped.
Hopefully that will help bring our death toll down in the next week or two.

I live on a massive main road, and it's still as quiet as Christmas Day here. I hate it with a passion, and long to have queues of traffic outside my house again...

justasking111 · 01/04/2020 18:07

Why are people sticking to the pavements, there are so few cars you can walk in the road most of the time in my neck of the woods.

Babyroobs · 01/04/2020 18:11

On our road there are young people from different household gathered to fix a car. When I walked my dog there were groups of teenagers having picnics and generally lots of family bike rides going onNnever seen so many people on bikes.

girlicorne · 01/04/2020 18:11

We are in the Midlands and it is quiet here (DH went out for supplies earlier) I haven't been out in 5 days as walking around a housing estate really does not appeal to me. Our council have closed the car parks to all of the local country parks so you can only go if you live within walking distance as there is nowhere to park near by so hopefully that should discourage hoards of people descending this weekend.

I wonder if it’s the people who were self-isolating for 14 days as per government instructions for any sign of a continuous cough or fever.

We were isolating dd for a cough she had for seven days when the advice changed to fourteen days for the household. That finished for us last Friday so I’ve been back at work (NHS) this week meaning that’s another car on the road.

I can see a busy main road from my office and there’s definitely more traffic around the traditional rush hour/office hours from people still commuting.

TheoneandObi · 01/04/2020 18:26

Super quiet here (west cornwall).
Unusually me and the dog were the only souls on the beach on the most beautiful day

TalbotAMan · 01/04/2020 18:38

DD1 (15) and I went out today for the first time for a week as we needed to restock the fridge -- she does the shopping and I do the driving. We went to Aldi (1.5 miles away) and Sainsbury's (1 mile away) as we need GF food which Aldi don't really do. It seemed quieter today than it did last Wednesday. There were, though, quite a few people who seemed to be going in to the shops and coming out with only a few things and she reported that the stocks were generally ok.

All being well we're back in lockdown until Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

Dr Yvonne Doyle: Motor vehicle traffic increasing

The medical director of Public Health England Dr Yvonne Doyle has warned motor vehicle use has gone up for the first time since restrictions were introduced

She went on to urge the public to stay in their homes.

MulticolourMophead · 01/04/2020 19:19

I got my bag of essentials, and walked back home. There is an increase in traffic, just a bit, not a lot. But hardly any pedestrians at all, at what is normally a busy time.

That's it shopping wise for now, just wish I could get some yeast, as that would stretch our lockdown isolation further.

The medical director of Public Health England Dr Yvonne Doyle has warned motor vehicle use has gone up for the first time since restrictions were introduced Several car companies have donated cars to the NHS so frontline workers don't need to use public transport. Could this be part of the reason?

Toothsil · 01/04/2020 20:30

DH is still working and he said the roads have been much busier the last couple of days...

XingMing · 01/04/2020 21:08

@Caucasianchalkcircles, I think that's quite good that you are seeing family/fitness circles in small groups. Not stopping to share infections, but just improving general population fitness, and having time to do it, has got to be good longterm for all of us.
