Pls tell me parents are *not* playing this trick on their children

I’ve just seen reports on Twitter that some parents are telling their kids school has started again, seeing them get excited....and then telling them ‘april Fool!’ .....and videoing their distress and posting on Facebook for LOLS.

This is really upsetting me. I can’t believe people would be so cruel.

I am not sure I believe these stories. Has anyone seen these posts?

I keep being sent the one of the little girl being told all the restaurants are shut (Nando's etc) and I find it really distressing to the poor little girl sobbing her heart out. Not funny at all.

BrutusMcDogface · 01/04/2020 13:41

Oranly - for goodness sake! It’s not that they hate being at home, it’s that their whole world has been turned upside down. They can’t see their friends or do their activities. My youngest dd in particular adores her teacher and I just hope upon hope that she gets a little time back with her at the end of next term Sad Don't be obtuse.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 01/04/2020 13:41

Gosh. Of course the child was furious. You're messing with her reality. And youre supposed to be her safe person.

A child has no choice but to accept it once they calmed down. What's the alternative?
And you're teaching her that causing that level pf upset is okay. And proud of that. Gosh :(

BrutusMcDogface · 01/04/2020 13:42

I watched the first few seconds of that girl crying at no takeaways etc and switched it right off. Shadenfreude is shit at the best of times, but laughing at a child!!??

MarieQueenofScots · 01/04/2020 13:43

and now thinks it's a great prank and wants to try it on her friends

For goodness sake don't allow your child to do this.

tenlittlecygnets · 01/04/2020 13:44

No, that's crap. I did prank dd by telling her that, due to pressure on wi-fi and the internet, all non-essential phones were being collected by the govt ... and she believed me for 5 mins...

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/04/2020 13:44

It does make you wonder, the families who have badly misjudged and really distressed their children, who were previously viewed as a "normal family" by peers...

The saying "Behind Closed Doors" was invented for this.

Future inhabitants of the Stately Homes threads...

megletthesecond · 01/04/2020 13:45

No. I saw it mentioned yesterday and thought it was bloody cruel.

Soubriquet · 01/04/2020 13:46

I pulled a prank on my dh but I wouldn’t do it to my kids. Especially about school.

(I put cups of water coming away from the toilet, and then told him there was water coming from the toilet! He initially panicked for a moment but got over it quick)

pigsDOfly · 01/04/2020 13:46

'Can't you take a joke'? The universal mantra of bullies everywhere.

BeetrootRocks · 01/04/2020 13:48

Omg why would you do that.
Some people are just total aresholes. I'm genuinely shocked.

On this thread I particularly like the poster who has said that children who are missing their friends, who have no one to play with, and it's going to be like that for weeks or potentially months have terrible home lives. I mean wtf you can see who did this. From little ones to teens, being at home with family and unable to play/ hang out with friends is totally abnormal. For teens in particular the idea of being unable to socialise is grim. It's developmentally normal that that age to distance from Family and start going out into the world.

Anyone who did this is a bastard basically. A lot of people seem to enjoy children's distress though. I got that one about takeaways from a work colleague and will guess what now I know what sort of person he is.

KatherineJaneway · 01/04/2020 13:49

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe I simply couldn't understand how the mum could find it funny to do that.

Oranly · 01/04/2020 13:49

it’s that their whole world has been turned upside down

My children have actually got a lot emotionally from this. They've learnt to entertain themselves in the face of boredom (this is actually a good thing) and developed / learnt lots of new skills that they would never had the time to do previously. The use of zoom allows them to communicate with others all over the world. The sense of peace over the household is astonishing. Maybe try using the time to help your children develop inner peace instead of bemoaning the loss of their old world. Because we're in this for the long haul.

Kyliesgoldshorts · 01/04/2020 13:49

Someone on my Facebook posted two clips. One of her getting her son up for school and another with him all dressed and walking up the path with his backpack on and dad taking him to school before both adults said April Fools. Pair of twats.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 01/04/2020 13:50

I've seen similar.. video posted of a child being goaded to cry by their excuse for a 'mother' telling them about all the takeaways that they can't go to anymore.

Yes I've seen this one! Someone sent it to me thinking I would find it hilarious......Hmm

I have no idea why you would want your child to feel even more crap in an already crappy situation.

Coronahomeschoolhell · 01/04/2020 13:50

Unbelievably cruel. Small DS misses school so much he insists on wearing his uniform to home-school every day.

Mumto1girl3boys · 01/04/2020 13:52

My kids would be distressed at the thought of going back to school now😂

BeetrootRocks · 01/04/2020 13:53

'Maybe try using the time to help your children develop inner peace instead of bemoaning the loss of their old world. Because we're in this for the long haul.'

I hope that made you feel properly smug and superior.
Lots of children are going to lose family members before this is over. I expect you'll be back to tell the bereaved to channel their inner peace and shut the fuck up when that kicks off.

Jesus this is really bringing out the worst in some people.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/04/2020 13:55

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate, I was sent it too. By somebody I really like. They obviously don't know me and I don't feel the same way about them. There's something vile about making a child cry - and somebody spreading it around isn't much better.

I'm sure the child is alright, but she still has a mother who doesn't put her own self-interest at the forefront. That's a problem.

tiktok · 01/04/2020 13:55

'Inner peace'

hahahahaha!

wanderings · 01/04/2020 13:56

This is precisely why I posted a thread last night warning all of us to look out for April Fool fake news this morning: but it hardly had any replies.

I'm surprised there wasn't more fake news all over social media this morning. As for the one about electricity blackouts, I thought that was one that had been sent a day too soon.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/04/2020 13:57

KatherineJaneway, me either.

PP who said that a joke is funny if both sides find it amusing, was right on the money.

Oranly · 01/04/2020 13:57

Jesus this is really bringing out the worst in some people

We're not immune from losing people either you know. And I agree it brings out the worst in people. The majority of people on this thread (with their self righteous attitude towards others who dare to play a joke that they don't approve of) is a good example of that. But froth away. If you have nothing better to do.

Sammymommy · 01/04/2020 13:58

"I hope that made you feel properly smug and superior"

Seriously, I heard the snort of disdain and pictured the glasses being pushed up her nose :D .

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/04/2020 13:58

BeetrootRocks, I cringed too. Perhaps the poster of that nugget is a shopping volunteer?
